The head principal at FHN is Dr. Dar-lene Jones, she’s the one who runs the show. She can generally be seen smiling and walking around the halls.

HEAD PRINCIPALAshlynn Laspe is the Student Council President for the 2011-2012 school year. She is the first Junior to be president at FHN. She will be in charge of all of the StuCo sponsored events, including Home-coming, Snowcoming, Mock Rock, Mr. FHN, and more.

SCREAM TEAMThe scream team is a group of guys that is always there to cheer on the Varsity girls volleyball team. The group is a little exclusive, but if you want to join you had better have a good pair of lungs, and a lot of energy.

Whether you’re a freshman, a new student, or even a returning student, there are some things you need to know that you may not. The North Star staff decided that every student at FHN could benefit from knowing these 10 people and what they’re all about.

You will probably hear her name on the an-nouncements more than once. Kayla is the artist of FHN. If you have a question about art, or need some help, ask this girl because she knows her stuff.

Getting called down here means that you’ve prob-ably done something bad, but don’t worry, just stay out of trouble and turn in your late notes, and you won’t have to worry about it.

Brian Santos is FHN’s instructional tech specialist, teaches Spanish and

sponsors the foreign language club. If you need a digital class project, or if you need help brushing up on your Spanish, he’s the guy to see.

Angie Gunnell is the head librar-ian here. She helps when classes are doing research in the library and she also maintains the library’s website.

Sarah Teson is President of the senior class this year. Delegates are in charge of everything that goes on in students’ graduating class. If you would like to get more involved with your class, or you just want to know what’s going on, find your class president.

If you’re ever in any kind of trouble, or you need to talk to someone that won’t judge you should go to Mary Kerr-Grant in Guidance. High school can be stressful, and anything can hap-pen, so you need to know that there’s always someone to go to.

Mike Janes is the activities director. He coordinates all sports games and usually attends games held at North. He also maintains the activities por-tion of the school’s website which includes the activities handbook, dates, and athletic information.

Remember the past

Seniors Andrea Long and Zack Wood dress up as an old married couple for North’s prom spirit week. They dressed up on group day during the week held on April 19. Long and Wood dressed up everyday of the week in impressive outfits and wowed their peers. Wood actively participates in the performing arts as well. (erin d’amico)

Graduates Alyssa Bocci and John Davis were named king and queen of the 2010-2011 masquerade prom. They danced together after the crowning with large smiles on their faces. Prom was held on April 23 at the St. Charles Convention Center. (brandon neer)

SENIOR FRESHMAN

-- Take rigorous classes. This is your last year. You can’t redo it, so don’t take it easy. You might regret it later if you do.

-- Don’t wait for senior year to plan for college, it will already be too late. Look into schools and take the ACT more than once.

-- College seems far away, but the grades you make this year matter. Don’t forget that, and make sure to work hard.

--Your performance through-out high school will be determined by your academic attitude freshman year.

-- You’ve kept up the work so far, so don’t let your grades slip now. Colleges won’t take Senioritis as an excuse.

-- You’re an upperclass-men now. Like it or not, the underclassmen look up to you. Make yourselves look good.

--Find specific clubs and sports that interest you the most and focus your energy there.

--Join clubs and sports that interest you. Don’t over do it though. Becoming over-whelmed is never good.

--This might be the last time you get to see some of the friends you’ve made in high school, so make the most of it.

-- You’ll be competing in the Sr/Jr spirit competition in assem-blies. Make sure you give the Seniors a run for their money.

--Don’t get lost in the trends of your peers. Find your interests and find people who share them with you.

--Don’t be afraid of the upperclassmen, be social and make friends in different grades.

For five years, Zac Smithey has been working with North’s art students to create art that they’re proud of. However, this summer, Smithey took his summer break to focus on his own art. Early in the summer, he was approached by Ozzie Smith to pro-duce paintings for fundraisers with Hank Aaron and Robin Yount. The art from the shows raised $9,000 in scholarship funds for children in need.

“It feels good that I can make art to send kids to college,” Smithey said. “It’s a good reason to do art.”

After creating art for the fundraiser, Smithey fo-cused on work for his show in mid July. Normally, Smithey doesn’t have trouble creating art for his shows, however, he had only finished a show a month and a half earlier.

“I get antsy if I sit around,” Smithey said. “I feel the need to be productive.”

Smithey spent between 10 and 14 hours a day in his studio creating over 96 pieces for his new show. While he made enough art for the showcase, he fell short of his goal.

“I didn’t want to show any of the same stuff from the other show,” Smithey said. “I set goals that are impossible so that I always achieve.”

Recently, Smithey bought a studio so he could work with local artists to cooperatively create an art community in the area. By doing this, he is hoping to draw attention to the talent that has been, in his opin-ion, ignored in the area.

“I want these areas to be known as happening places for art,” Smithey said. “I want to start a move-ment.”

The 900 Missouri girls at Girls State are first sorted into cities and counties. From there, the girls could run for offices, starting with small lo-cal positions and working up to state wide positions, such as governor. The girls performed the duties of these of-ficials in their fictional society.

“I was elected to the Senate,” Ni-cole said. “It was exciting because I sponsored a bill. It passed and got to

MGS is a week long program at the Univer-sity of Central Missouri designed to teach high school senior girls about Missouri government.

“Girls State taught me a lot more about our government system and the practical uses of that system,”

On June 13, Seniors Alex Oppenborn, Jared Hurr, Colleen Mertins, Maggie Cur-ran, Amy Krieg and Spanish teacher Brian Santos traveled 2026 miles to San Jose, Costa Rica. After meeting up with stu-dents from Illinois, the group spent eight days in the country and experienced every-thing from hiking a volcano to zip lining between mountains.

“Mr. Santos wanted to offer a trip to Costa Rica to students. It’s a good way to experience a different part of the world and it helped us with our spanish while we were there,” Oppenborn said. “For anyone who wants to experience a different cul-ture, it’s definitely an eye opener. Their culture rubs off on you really fast, and you even actually start talking like them.”

The Varsity Cheerleading

squad took third place in

Regionals this summer. Re-gionals were

held at St. Francis Borgia in Washington,

MO. On July 19 where they

competed against seven other squads.

The Varsity Cheerleaders will be going

to State which is at Mizzou

during the beginning of

October. “I was pretty ex-cited,” senior Leilani Ball-

esteros said. “We haven’t

done that well at Regionals

since I’ve been on Varsity.”

Over the summer, senior Isabella Lanzara was in Altavilla, Italy for 40 days spending time visiting her friends and family. In this photo, Lanzara was hanging out with her friends Simone and Giuseppe. In previous years, Lanzara has usually spent her first semester of school in the United States and her second semester of school in Italy.

Seniors Sara Jewson and Alex Boschert stand in the hole where Jewson’s pool is now. Construction of the pool took two weeks to complete. “I didn’t know they were even thinking about getting one until my mom said the pool guy was coming over,” Jewson said. “I was so excited!”

FCA members Susanna McFarland, Brandon Goggin, and Shawn Mullarkey washed cars for charity while on a retreat at Pinecrest Nazarene Camp in Fredericktown, MO. Over $6000 was made from their efforts and all proceeds went to Pinecrest for a camp called Family Camp which is geared towards the entire family.

Junior Marissa Finkbeiner stands with two of her two students from a camp she attended, Vacation Bible Experi-ence (VBX). This camp lasted five days where high schoolers taught younger kids about faith, love, trust and life. In any day, activities they did ranged from sports, crafts, big group worship, music and lesson time.

This summer, junior Emily Palmer got to meet her favorite band, Forever the Sickest Kids. She met them after their concert at Six Flags on July 2. “It’s been on my bucket list to meet them and it was all so exciting,” Palmer said.

FHN doesn’t win every game or take first place at every competition, but support for peers should never change. Stay positive,

even when it isn’t our finest hour.

Major events and traditions exist, but there’s room to create new ways to show spirit. Be a spirit leader, always look for new event ideas

and opportunities.

Every year, the people of Student Council put together weeks filled with wacky-anything days, class color days, and days when teachers and students switch something around.

But every year, less students choose to partake in these events. Class color days do get support- from a group of 12 girls who met the night before and glittered some blue or pink t-shirts. And sure, the football games were filled with supportive fans who went to the shirtless-in-freezing-cold-extremes. Or was that just a cluster of the same forty people at every game?

This year students should try something radical: participating. Don’t let the same seven guys spell “Knights” on their chest at football games. On class color days, try making a sea of uninterrupted green, maroon, blue and purple. When kids say that they hate high school, it’s not because high school unknowingly sucks, high school is what you make it. You can muddle through and tell stories later in life about how you swam against the current for four years; or, you can make it something that you never wanted to leave. And you can’t remember who won that football game you went to shirtless in 49 degree weather because that’s not what mattered.

You won because you were there.

DECA cookie salesYou can smell the cookies throughout the school. They are sold for $1, so when you smell them you better run before they are sold out.

CAUTION: Avoid at the end of the dayThese are the main stairs to get to the buses and parking lot, but it is jammed- packed at the end of the day. If you don’t want to get pushed and shoved, use the main office entrance or the entrance in the business hallway.

Math HallwayMake sure you are on your best behavior in this hallway. Girls: make sure to cover-up while passing through. Make sure you DON’T have food or earphones. PDA is absolutley not tolerated here.

Stair Case O’DeathTry to avoid these stairs throughout the day. These will lead you to the butterfly hallway and will add extra time to get to your classes.

Hidden PlacesThese are some of the harder places to find, but don’t forget to look around the corners. This is where a few of the English rooms are located.

Quickest HallwayThis hallway will save you time from class to class, so try to use it if possible.

Stinky Gym HallwayMake sure to plug your nose while pass-ing through this hallway. Whether you’re going to gym or the tech room, the smell will make you sick to your stomach.
