Barry Doyle, a loving husband, father, and long-time friend to many, wholeheartedly devoted 25 years of food- industry service to those in the Triangle area and beyond. Early on, Barry had a vision for his community: a welcoming family restaurant that would provide all-day breakfast and delicious hamburgers that weren’t overcooked. With only 50 seats, Barry’s Cafe opened its doors on May 19, 1992 in the Swift Creek Shopping Center in West Raleigh. The founding mission, “To make each person leave happier than when they first arrived,” is still carried out to this day.

Barry made it his mission to ensure customers felt like family when they walked in the doors of the cafe. Over the course of his 25 year service, Barry learned the names of more than 5,000 patrons. He was beloved by many throughout the community, not because he was a friendly fellow who served good food, but because he deeply cared about serving others. This is evidenced by the many families who keep coming back to Barry’s each year. Multi generations of families continue to gather in this space, because like Barry’s mission “when you’re there, you’re a part of the family.”

Barry decided to establish a not-for-profit foundation, called Feed the Firefighters, which would provide food and beverages to firefighters and emergency personnel. As fate would have it, the international trademark for the foundation was approved and granted on September 11, 2001. Barry’s Cafe is recognized in all 50 states and 27 countries as a restaurant that honors firefighters.
