Findon Parish Council News – February 2013The Parish Council held their first meeting of 2013 on 28th January, there was a lot to get through and it

was good to welcome members of the parish who attend as public audience on what was a wet and windy night.

Findon Village ClockUnfortunately repairs to the clock have taken a further set back as West Dean College have had to withdraw their

support due to changes in their administrative and course structure. Whilst disappointing, we have not given up and are re-visiting the companies interested in undertaking

the repairs and also the funding options available to us.

Snow, Ice & Flood water

The assortment of weather over the

last few weeks has brought a variety of different matters to our attention.

We’ve received very good reports regarding the gritting service undertaken by our private contractors but upon the arrival of spring; we will still be reviewing the contract to see

where any improvements might be made for future years.

The high winds have not only caused a large volume of leaf fall but in some parts have created hanging or broken branches that cause obstruction or dangers to footpaths and roads.

Cllr Fullalove and the Clerk are in the process of arranging a group of ‘Tree Wardens’ for the Parish – volunteers

who will be keeping an eye out for this type of tree damage as well as looking for signs of weakness or disease in our trees. In the meantime if you notice any

tree/hedging obstruction to the footpath or highway please report it via West Sussex County Council on 01243 777100

The results of the heavy rain, melting snow and high winds have meant that there has been a large amount of

surface water in the ‘usual’ places around the parish.

Whilst there is a certain amount of surface water that must be considered as ‘acceptable’, West Sussex County Council have been notified of our major risk areas and we are working

with them to look at ways to improve the situation. The Parish Council will be looking to put together a ‘contingencies’ plan for the parish in due course, however it is

the responsibility of each individual to ensure the safety and adequate protection of their property.

Messy ChurchTuesday 5 MarchFindon Village Hall, 3.30-5.45 pm * crafts * celebration *stories * meal *

Do come and join us! For families and children of all ages

>> 5 <<

If you see a blocked or overflowing drain on the highway, don’t assume that someone else has reported

it…please advise the Parish Clerk.

Footpaths, pavements & potholes Again, this is mainly a weather issue at present. Some of the lovely footpaths and walkways around the parish have become a little muddy underfoot.

Whilst we are reporting any problems that we are aware of, we also need those of you who like to get out and about to notify us of any that we may have missed…this can be impassable

footpaths due to excessive mud, fly tipping, broken signage, overgrown vegetation etc. These can be reported directly to West Sussex County Council via their

website, using the free ‘Love West Sussex’ App via your mobile phone or by alerting the Parish Clerk.

Parking Parking problems within the Village are becoming a regular topic of conversation. Regular complaints are

being made regarding the lack of consideration shown by people when it comes to parking their vehicles. There is a very real concern that inconsiderate parking of private

vehicles may eventually lose Findon our bus service, not to mention the damage being caused to grass verges and general obstructions to the pavements (and other road users) that

are also being caused.

We have held discussions with the

Highways Officers regarding the major problem area along the High Street and Horsham Road, and are looking at several different options to alleviate the problem.

One option is the installation of double yellow lines, the other is road widening at specific points.

We would respectfully request that people who do park their vehicles

anywhere within the Village do so with due consideration. Please ensure that you are not preventing buses, emergency or other large vehicles from travelling unhindered past your

vehicle. Please do not park on the grass verges or green space areas within the Village and please do not block or obstruct pavements or drop kerb

access to footpaths.

FinanceThe Parish Council have submitted their precept request to Arun District Council. Due to a variety of factors including Government changes to the Council

Tax support system, it is unfortunately the case that Findon residents will see a slight increase in the section of your council tax assigned to the Parish Council.

Having kept the amount requested from Arun fixed at £31,000 for the last two years, we have endeavoured to keep this increase as low as possible whilst needing to ensure we maintain

the same level of commitment to community projects and care as has been shown in the past.To that end the request this year was for £32,098 an increase of £1,098.

Due to the Government changes, Arun District Council is going to provide us with a one off grant payment of £1,902 to be incorporated with the precept, therefore an overall figure of £34,000

will be received.

Seeking New SupervisorsWould you like to join the team of first aid-trained pool supervisors? Two people are required on duty for every session that the pool is open to the public (3.30-4.30pm Monday-Saturday, April-Sept, weather permitting, plus private parties), so the more helpers we have the fewer duties we have to

share - generally about once a week. You will need an up-to-date first aid certificate (including basic resuscitation) and training can be provided at a cost of just £8, which is refunded after three pool duties. If you are interested in training - first sessions after Easter - please contact

Lisa Wallis-Adams (07902 469055). You don't have to be connected to the school. Everyone is very welcome to volunteer (aged over 16). Supervisors will be invited to celebrate the new season with a Pool, Pimms & Picnic Party just as soon as the warm weather arrives!

Pool Committee AGM This will take place on Wednesday 6 March, 8.00pm at The Gun. Please

contact Secretary Jacqui Greaney (872599, [email protected]) if you would like to join the general committee, or if you would like any queries to be discussed at the meeting.

Opening at Easter? We plan to be ready for the school Easter Holidays, just as soon as the sunny weather starts and our Air Source Heat Pump can get the water temperature up to last year’s lovely 30 degrees.

Findon Friendship ClubIt is with sadness I report the final meeting of Findon Friendship Club took place on 29th January 2013.A big "Thank you" to all who helped

it continue for the 50 plus years since it was founded by Nurse Day, when she saw the need of Findon's older generation to get together in friendship.

Times change and due to lack of members and anyone offering to take on the roll of leader, the club has now closed.Residents of Findon now come from

far and wide with many interests. With the family of Findon born oldies getting fewer with each passing year, there is no longer a place for Findon Friendship club. Thus ending

a very happy era.

One of the faithful few members

Cards And Board Games

With the demise of the Friendship

Club there may be some of you out there who would like to come along to the hall on a Wednesday afternoon for a little gentle brain exercise. On the first and third

Wednesday of each month we play bridge. On the second and fourth Wednesday we play either Rummikub or cards, whichever you would prefer. Rummikub is a game

similar to Scrabble but with numbers instead of letters. It is quite simple to learn the rules and the more experienced players would be delighted to instruct beginners.

There is no joining fee – a charge of £2 per afternoon is made with tea and biscuits extra. We start at 2pm and look forward to seeing you. For further information contact

Pat Canavan on 874141.

To all Elvis fans - on Saturday 6th March at Findon Village Hall the Elvis Presley Tribute Band "Eel,Fish,Parsley" are once again holding an Elvis Charity Night in Aid of

Paws Animal Sanctuary. Tickets £8 each from Ann Burfoot in Findon on 01903 873801 - a few tickets left if you are quick. If you are fit and able you will be up dancing. There will be Llne

Dancing, a raffle and an American themed Supper. You may bring your own alcohol, but tea and coffee will be on sale. Promising another night to remember, with live music and fun.

The Tribute Band have visited the sanctuary on a number of occasions. One member of the band Andrew adopted a cat from us, and Elvis andhis new wife came and gave a home

to two of our Guinea-pigs. If you remember last February a pony was dumped on the grass verge of the A24 in Findon, and we went and rescued him. The band heard about

this and came to see the little pony and held a charity night to raise money to pay his Vets bills, we named the pony Elvis after the the band. The pony was in a terrible neglected state,

had lice was covered in prickly burrs, had badly infected eyes and needed to be gelded, the band covered all the costs. It has taken a year but thanks to the bands generosity, our Vet, and

hard working Volunteers Elvis the pony has now fully recovered.Elvis, the band and the dancers all have day jobs, they are great Charity Fund Raisers. They are also available

for Parties, Weddings, Pubs andClubs, even BBQs. If you would like to book them contact Andrew on 07974 072002. (Just imagine having Elvis and the band at your wedding

reception, wouldn't all the Mums, Dads, relatives and friends forever remember your wedding reception!)! You can also see them on Facebook or You Tube.

Meat Fit To Eat

So, what have we been eating in

burgers, sausages and ready-made meals all these years? And if we have lost trust in the branded manufacturers (Nestles, Findus etc) and the big supermarkets

who compete on price, who can we turn to?

The advice seems to be ‘shop locally’ and ‘buy from independent butchers.’Findon has been home to Peckhams for as long as anyone can remember, so could our local butcher be a winner

in the new battleground for hearts and minds?

Findon News spoke to the present owner Nick Hamilton, and asked if he’d experienced an upturn in business.

Nick: ‘Yes we’re starting to, with many new faces looking in to say they’ll shop with us in the future. So, having

been squeezed by the supermarkets for so long, it’s nice to see a change in outlook.’

But doesn’t price still favour the supermarket?

Nick: ‘It’s a misconception that we’re dearer. Once you ignore their loss leaders and bargain bin offers, and

compare like with like, we are competitive on price. Try us!’

The uproar over horsemeat is the secondary issue faced by manufacturers and supermarkets. Customers are more alarmed to discover they can no longer rely on

labelling as a sure guide to food content. If the ingredients are not as described they could (quite literally) be anything! How certain are Peckhams about their product?

Nick: ‘When you buy cheap ready-made meals at rock bottom prices,

you don’t know what you’re getting. Taking into account the costs of sourcing ingredients, managing extended supply lines, packaging, marketing, transport, warehousing… is

it any wonder there’s not much left for the actual food content?

>> 13 <<

You don’t have those problems?

Nick: We don’t. All our beef, pork and lamb is sourced from Sussex farms we know well, in fact as local as

Storrington. Our poultry comes from long-standing suppliers in Suffolk.

Which you’re sure about? The quality and provenance?

Nick: Yes we have complete records to trace all the products we sell. We can share this information with customers. What’s more we cut the meat on the counter so customers can

see what they’re buying. Or we use it for making mince, sausages and burgers – all such by-products are made up in-store.

What can you tell us about the inspection regime?

Nick: We talk to the farmers and the meat market salesmen. Carcasses

come from local abattoirs, and let me say in the retail sector, they are very

strictly regulated. As for us, Arun Council make strict checks on things like cleaning, temperatures and general records.

Sounds very reassuring. What outlets do you supply in the village?

Nick: The Gun Inn, Sylvan Oak, Village House, Steakhouse Grill. So most of them.

The conclusion from our mini investigation seems to be ‘Know What

You Eat’ and be confident of your meat’s source and handling. Where budgets are tight it might be wiser to consume meat less frequently but ensure it’s the real thing when you do!

Judging by the press it seems that many of us have been doing just the opposite.

Findon Downs WI

February 2013

Three visitors and two members of Findon Valley WI were welcomed to our afternoon meeting. The Treasurer thanked the members

for their very prompt payment of subscriptions.Washington WI has invited us to join them on an outing to Kensington Palace on the 13th June and a note

has been made of those members who are interested in joining this outing. Requests were made for members wishing to travel to the Globe Theatre in July and September.

Our guest speaker Mr Neil Sadler gave an interesting talk about “A Policeman’s Lot” - his life in the Police Force. Since joining the force in 1978, his service took him to Hong Kong,

Trinidad and other places overseas, returning to England and working in the Isle of Man, Bognor Regis, Horsham and Worthing.

Mr Sadler showed us many slides of various events which had taken place in the last few years, including pictures

of Patrick McGee, the IRA Bomber who plotted to kill Margaret Thatcher when she was staying in the Grand Hotel in Brighton. We were told that Mr McGee was given 8 life

sentences, and during his time spent in prison he acquired a PHD and is now on a mission for world peace with the daughter of one of the victims of the Brighton Bombing.

Do I Go Home Today? My family brought me home cradled in their arms. They cuddled me and smiled at me, said I fitted in their palms,They played with me and laughed at me, they showered me with toys.I really love my family, the boisterous girls and boys.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats,They even let me sleep with them- all snuggled in their sheets. They used to fight to hold my lead I'm very proud to say. These things I never will forget -a treasured memory - I now live in a dog rescue without my family.

They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe,So, I didn't know the difference with more shoes old and new.The kids and I would play with rags, for hours we'd pull and tug,I thought that I was doing right, when I chewed the bedroom rug.

They said that I was out of control and would have to live outside.I didn't understand all this, although I tried and tried. The walks all stopped and one by one said "Didn't have the time".I wish that I could change things - I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely, in the backyard on a chain.

I barked and barked all day long, especially in the rain.So they brought me to this rescue, embarrassed to say why. They said that I caused allergies and didn't say goodbye.

If only I'd had training classes as a little pup,

I'd not have been so difficult when I was all grown up."You've only got one day left" I heard the kennel maid say.Does that mean they've given me a second chance?Do I go home today?

How to reduce you energy costs

for free!Sourced from various energy suppliers websites, here are a few simple ideas to reduce your home energy bills.

Even if you are aware of these it is worth a reminder..........

Turning your heating room thermostats down by 1°C can save

you between £55 and £65 per year.

Closing your curtains will help keep

the heat inside and reduce draughts from your windows.

Turning off lights in an unoccupied room - why pay for lighting an area that is not in use?

Always use a full load in the washing machine, and try to wash your clothes at 40°C (or lower if possible).

Give the tumble dryer a rest! For an average family it can cost over £115

per annum to operate a tumble dryer. Letting clothes dry naturally (inside or out) is far more cost efficient.

Save around 10% on electricity costs by turning appliances off rather than leaving them on standby - TV’s are the worst offenders!

Keeping Warm!Hopefully the really cold weather of

winter has now passed, but it’s always good to get advice about heating your home.We have garnered the expertise of local plumbers, advice in the press

and the experience of local residents to come up with some key points.

Keep the boiler on:The majority view is that to allow the boiler to remain on timed settings in cold weather is not cost effective. Better to leave it on constantly at 20

degrees as this can actually reduce the work your system has to do, rather than having to re-heat your home once you’ve let it get cold. You might like to turn the stat down to 12-15

when going to bed. Any presumed savings from economising on heat may be lost in creating damp patches that will have to be treated.

Water Tank In The Loft? With older systems, where water is stored in the loft can be a worry in the

extreme cold, but the above tip should counter-act the danger of freezing, plus of course making sure you have well lagged pipes and tank. Finally consider leaving the loft hatch slightly

ajar on the coldest nights, to enable warm air to circulate up there. Watch out for (and remover promptly) any intruding snow into your loft space.

Going AwayThe number one tip is to turn off the water supply at the stop cock.

Otherwise keep the heating system on and avoid leaving behind a freezing house.

We hope these tips help our readers

and welcome any home maintenance advice you may wish to pass on.

Reading in the last issue that Findon

News is now a self –funding publication, free to readers, a word or two of appreciation for our editor seems certainly due, and I challenge him to spare the blushes and print this

letter. Barely 18 months ago, the post which Mr Jordan had filled for many years became vacant. Until then we had a parish newsletter which barely

covered its costs. In taking it on, Nick Gore made some brave decisions, the first of course was to accept the role. His reward was to gain the able assistance of Meg Gore, Gayle Blake

(his occasional deputy) along with initial financial support from the council. To then bring out a new-look A5 format was courageous and

fortunately it worked. He then expanded the content to cover matters

relevant to residents. Avoiding a

merger with Along The Furlong also took courage, not just because the work and risks would have been pooled, but because Findon News was establishing an independent (thus

secular) voice of ALL residents. And finally to edit with integrity by including opposing points of view without taking sides, despite his ‘debt’ to the Council and to local advertisers, must take

courage at times, as we saw when his remaining stock was nearly ‘trashed’ by an angry reader!Hopefully Nick can fill this role for years to come, and apparently the

best way we can assist him is to supply articles of local interest. Gathering in enough copy to fill the pages every month must be a constant challenge for him. So lets

help.Richard Mulhallen

Readers’ letters...................

This letter published with some blushing reluctance. But as Richard points out there are challenges most months to fill the pages of this newsletter. Although the Findon News “team” are happy to put each edition together, without your input this publication would not exist. So please do keep submitting your own

articles to keep our pages filled. If you would like to see an article on a particular subject, then do get in touch and let us know, after all it is your newsletter. Ed.
