The medical profession's ethics watchdog has backed the Law Reform Commission's controversial

proposal to give terminally ill patients the right to die.

Medical Council ethics committee chairman David Fang Jin-sheng said Thursday the council may

attempt to define the state of mental competence in any future guidelines. ...

Fang agreed with the commission that there is no need to legislate for such a practice, saying it would take time for the public to become familiar with it.

The concept of advance directives - written instructions on the patients' future medical treatment should they reach a stage where they are no longer mentally competent - has sparked public debate as to

whether it could lead to euthanasia, or mercy killing.

Excerpted from (2006, Aug 18) Ethics body supports proposal to give terminally ill right to die. The Standard, pp. M04.
