By Josée-Chantal Martineau and Gwenn Gauthier.

Sam: I am SamI’ll grant your wishWould you like to speak English?

Alex: I would not like to speak EnglishAnd I don’t even want a wish.

Sam: You could speak it here or there. You could speak it anywhere.

Alex: I will not speak it here or there.I will not speak it anywhere.I do not like to speak EnglishAnd I don’t even want a wish.

Sam: You could speak it in your school. You could speak it as a rule. You could speak it at your job.You could speak with uncle Bob.

Alex: I will not speak it in my school.I will not speak it as a rule.I will not speak it at my job.I will not speak at all with Bob.I won’t speak it here or there.I won’t speak it anywhere.I do not like to speak English. And I don’t even want a wish.

Sam: You could speak it in the morning. You will see it’s not that boring. You could speak it in the eveningWhile you’re chatting or you’re working.

Alex: Not in the school, not as a rule. Not at my job and not with Bob.Not in the morning, nor the evening.

(Reader 1 directs opening comments to members of the audience):

READER 1: Excuse me, you – over there - move aside please, move aside. We have to make room here. Ah, would you two squeeze together other there.

READER 2: Yes, let’s create a little space. Come on, work with us people!

READER 3: Wait a minute. Why are you two bossing everybody around? Why do we need to make some space?

READER 1: Something BIG is coming. Listen, I don’t really have time to talk about this. I mean big is BIG.

READER 2: You probably wouldn’t understand anyway. Just trust us on this one, will you?

READER 4: Well, if what’s coming is so BIG, maybe some of us can help. Can you give us just a little hint about what it is that’s coming?

READER 1: OK, OK. It’s the H1N1. That’s all you need to know.

READER 2: Hey, over there…, move along. We don’t have allday here.

READER 3: H1N1? Is that a droid related to R2D2?

(Reader 1 rolls eyes and shakes head in a hopeless manner).

READER 1: No, no. I’m talking about the SWINE INFLUENZA.Well OK, most folks call it SWINE FLU - or HOGFLU - and some folks just call it THE SWINE!

READER 2: I like to call it “THE MISTER PIGGY FLU”. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?

READER 1: Well, no matter what you call it – it’s BIG.

READER 4: Hey, we like pigs as much as most anybody, but what can we do if pigs are going to get the flu? I mean, is this really our problem?

READER 2: Help! We’re talking here about a PANDEMIC! A possible world-wide EPIDEMIC! AN EXTRAVAGENZA of INFLUENZA!

(To audience).

READER 3: I think he/she means this is not just about pigs.

READER 1: Riiiiiight! So, I need you all to make room for my Readers Theater Chorus. They’ve been waiting far too long, and they have something importantto say to all of us. We just need to make room for them, that’s all.

READER 4: And the chorus is going to talk about this FLU?

READER 2: Duh…that’s the plan.

(Reader 2 rolls eyes and shakes head in a hopeless manner, then continues).READER 2: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, teachers and students, please give it up for The Swine Flu. Chorus…

(Chorus Voice 1 verbally sets the beat for the chant. Chorus marches in from all sides chanting the following:

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three four…

ALL: Swine flu!Influenza!It’s outrageous,It’s contagious,It’s pandemic,Epidemic,What can we do

To beat the flu?

ALL GIRLS: What can we do?

ALL BOYS: What can we do?

ALL GIRLS: What can we do?

ALL: To beat the flu?

(By the end of the above chant, Chorus members have taken their assigned positions in the performance area).

READER 3: OK, OK, I’m starting to get the picture. This isn’t about pigs catching the flu at all, is it?

ALL: No!

READER 4: It’s about us catching the flu from the PIGS! Well, that settles it for me. I’m staying as far away from pigs as I can - AND – no more eating pork chops until this thing is over!

READER 1: No, you don’t actually catch the flu from pigs - and eating pork chops has nothing to do with it either.

READER 2: You catch the flu from a “VIRUS” -

READER 1: Better known to us as the “FLU BUG”!

READER 3: So, the flu bug is a virus and that’s what gives us the flu. Well, how can we tell if we’re coming down with this Swine Flu thing?

CHORUS VOICE 2: If you are coming down with the swine flu, you’ll feel pretty much the same way you do when you are coming down with any flu.CHORUS VOICE 3: You might have a fever, cough, and sore throat!

CHORUS VOICE 4: That’s true, but your head and body might also ache.

CHORUS VOICE 5: And you might have the chills and feel really tired.

READER 3: Doesn’t sound like fun to me!

READER 4: So, are you telling us that we can learn how to protect ourselves from this nasty flu bug?

READERS 1, 2: You got it!!!!

READER 3: But how?

READER 1: Well, I thought you’d never ask. We’ve all got to learn how to…

READERS 1, 2: BEAT THAT BUG!

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three four…

ALL: Swine flu!Influenza! It’s outrageous,It’s contagious,It’s pandemic,Epidemic,What can we doTo beat the flu?

ALL GIRLS: Pull the plug,

ALL BOYS: Stop that thug,

ALL GIRLS: Find a drug,

ALL: To beat that bug!

READER 3: Yeah, well BRING IT ON, BUG! When you come around, I’ll be ready. I heard on TV there is a drug out there that beats flu bugs and I’m going out to get vaccinated!

READER 4: Me too.

READER 1: That’s right, it’s a good idea to get a flu shot, but there’s a lot more we all can do to protect ourselves from that flu bug. Just listen:

CHORUS VOICE 2: You can beat that bug by covering your nose andmouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then throw the tissue in the trash right away.CHORUS VOICE 3: If you don’t have a tissue, cover your cough orsneeze by sneezing into your elbow. Don’t use your hand.

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three…

(CHORUS VOICE 1 leads some of the chorus members as they demonstrate how to cover their sneezes using their elbows. They do this together, and in unison, as they follow the chorus leader).

AH-CHOO CHORUS: AH-CHOO!!!!!

CHORUS VOICE 4: You can beat that bug by washing your hands a lot. Don’t forget to wash before eating, and after touching animals or using the bathroom. Use soap and running water.

CHORUS VOICE 5: While you are washing, imagine you are singing“The Happy Birthday Song” three times. When you’ve finished singing, you’ve washed your hands long enough.

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three…

(CHORUS VOICE 1 leads chorus as some members sing and some mime washing their hands during the singing of “The Happy Birthday Song”. This is done three times, quickly. Thechorus works together on this as they follow the chorus leader).

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you, happybirthday to you, happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you!

CHORUS VOICE 6: Beat that bug by NOT touching your eyes, nose or mouth. If the flu bug has gotten on your fingers, don’t let it get inside of you from there! FREEZEthose fingers and keep them away from your face.

CHORUS VOICE 7: Beat that bug by NOT getting too close to people who are sick. AND, if you are sick, stay home from school until you are well again.

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three four…

READER 2: We now have a plan to beat the Mister Piggy flu bug!

READER 3: Yeah well, but all that information is just too much to remember.

READER 4: He/she’s right. How in the world will I remember everything?

READER 1: Well, we thought you might say something like that.

READER 2: So, right now, we’re passing out a poem to help you remember the basics. Everyone in the audience will get a copy.READER 2: The poem can also be used as a jump rope rhyme – if you’re into that sort of thing.

(Once the poem sheets have been distributed through the audience, CHORUS VOICE 1 leads either the original chorus or a new chorus of younger elementary students in a vocal performance of the poem. If you have rope-jumpers who want to jump along to the rhythmand do the hand motions while they jump, this would be a great addition to the presentation).

CHORUS VOICE 1: One, two, three four…Piggy, piggy, piggy, (clap hands once for 4thbeat)Mister Piggy Flu.If you come to visit, (clap hands once for 4th beat)Here is what I’ll do.Use a tissue when I sneeze,Then throw it away,(Mime throwing something on the word “throw”)Wash my hands often,Use my elbow when I’m coughin’.(Mime mouth to elbow on the word “coughin’”)Always keep my hands(Hold up both hands on the word “hands”)Away from my face.No rubbing, no scratching,(Hold up hands like cat claws on the word “scratching”)Keep them in their place!(Hold hands down to side on the word “place”)
