Shared Blessing by Doug Ross

As America opens up safely and regionally we discover the many good acts that people have done for others.

I watched a gold match between four superstars to benefit food banks. Tiger Woods and Peyton

Manning played against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in a driving rain to raise twenty million dollars.

Many companies joined our government in providing needed supplies and assistance. Our first responders and medical workers risked their lives in service to others. The class of 2020 sacrificed much of their traditions as well as half of their senior year. Many organizations, businesses and individuals have feted the seniors to lessen their loss. Truckers kept moving vital supplies. Grocery stores remained stocked (except for toilet paper), for everyone. Restaurants provided take-out and delivery. Patrons bought restaurant food to assist the restaurant owners and workers. Scientists worked together to find a treatment and a vaccine.

There are thousands of other acts of kindness, and thousands more to come. The pandemic has undoubtedly caused harm, misery and death. It has also revealed humans helping humans.

We are reminded of Jesus’ words to the disciples from Matthew 25: “Whatever you have done for the least of my brothers, you have done for me.”

Helping others is a gift from God, for the people of God.

Thanks be to God.

Missions and Causes – Volunteers Needed!

By Kerry Campbell

Missions and Causes – Volunteers Needed!

Church Council has remained busy. At our Zoom meeting last week we received reports from six study groups previously assigned to review every thought, idea or suggestion that emerged from the January and February Parsonage Fellowship meetings.

The study groups did an outstanding job and we were able to identify many ideas we could use, incorporate into existing programs or refer to an existing committee or work group for their consideration.

Council identified six areas requiring new committees, chairpersons or volunteers.

We are looking for people willing to step forward and take a role in making those things happen. They are:

1. Marketing and promotion. We don't have a marketing committee or chairperson at this point. We are accomplishing some marketing functions but we need someone to exercise overall supervisory coordination. The floor is open for volunteers.

2. History. As I understand, this committee would welcome some help. Our history is one of our strengths. We need to show it to those outside our Church. Our own members have a great interest in knowing more of it.

3. Youth Group. The Youth Council is in place and they are working on this. They will welcome help, especially younger adults with an interest in this area. We have some youth who have an interest. The time is right!

4. Healthy Church Team. This is the conference designation for the mandated com-mittee each Church must have before it can begin in-person worship again. In-person worship is not yet approved but we are asked to plan for it in advance. We are told the committee must include the pastor, a medical professional, a lawyer, and representatives from Trustees and hos-pitality/greeters. We will welcome volunteers for that committee.

We need some from the required groups and will welcome anyone who has an interest in planning for re-opening, whenever that may occur. It can't possibly be before June 7 and it appears state guidelines will push it beyond that time.

5. Zoom worship moderator. Doug Harris would like

to turn this over to someone else by June 7. Volunteers?

Suggestions?

Missions and Causes—Continued

6. Blessing Box. Council approved the concept and another nearby Church using this ministry advises their experience is positive. The concept is simple: a publicly available “box” where food or essentials can be left to be picked up by anyone needing them. Often stated: if you have something, leave it; if you need something, take it.

The perception is that an unusually large number of people are hurting now. Many are willing to help. This is meant to be anonymous and honor-system based. No one needs to sign up or qualify; they just drive past and take what they need.

The other Church gave us some interesting insights as to how they operate theirs. There is more than one way to do that. We need a committee to take over all aspects of this mission: the operational concept, cost, design, location, construction and continuing operation.

We don't want to build something and put it in place and have it become an orphan after the novelty wears off! This committee would make the Blessing Box "its baby!" Volunteers who feel called to help with this important mission are invited. Barbara Kagey is willing to take the lead on this effort. Others willing to work on it should contact her.

This all sounds like a lot. This is a good time, however, to undertake these things. Needs in the community are great. Our NEED to be active, involved and participating is great. Maybe we even have a little extra time on our hands to get something extra done!

While the chairperson has no desire to have "hands on" everything we do, Council does need to coordinate new committees and chairpersons. Except for the Blessing Box (contact Barbara) wherever above you see the word "Volunteer" or "new committee," please contact Kerry Campbell if you are willing to help.

Committee chairpersons are free to contact their own "volunteers" and let him know who they are! Kerry will keep the list of those who are willing and we will have Council sanction their efforts, perhaps by e-mail vote or if necessary, at an interim Zoom meeting.

Jennifer Coon Award Recipients

FUMC members Landon Bolling and Aidan Shin have been named recipients of this year’s Jennifer Coon Award. This award is one of the highest honors a Breckinridge Elementary student can receive. The award recognizes those

who exemplify the qualities of strong character, responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, fairness, respect and citizenship.

The award was established to honor the memory of Jennifer Coon, a former Breckinridge student who is fondly remembered for her exemplary character. Jennifer was a member of our FUMC family where her mother Angela has been a life-long member.

Each year teachers and staff members at Breckinridge nominate students from preschool through fifth grade. The students chosen receive engraved plaques and their names are permanently recorded on the Breckinridge plaque, which hangs in the hallway showcase.

Landon was chosen from the fifth grade and Aidan was chosen from the second grade. We are extremely proud of both and that they would exemplify the virtues described comes as no surprise to those of us at FUMC who know them. Congratulations Landon and Aidan!

A Message from The Pastor

Waiting is often necessary, even though we want to see our plans fulfilled right now. Sometimes the waiting seems to go on and on, so that we begin to doubt that our dreams and wishes will ever come true. As we journey toward our dreams, we seek confirmation or promises that our striving will bring results. When our faith community sets a vision for the kingdom of God and works to fulfill our missions, we want God to make the end results clear.

While wandering in the wilderness for forty years, the Israelites would have wondered when they were going to enter the Promised Land. Many ordinary people would have given up. Although the Israelites had God's promise, their daily reality was harsh, filled with uncertainty, complaints, and resentment. The leaders carried a heavy burden. The Israelites waited and sought God’s will. As the Israelites experienced difficulties, they were broken before God and gradually sought their identity as God's children.

Their situation was uncertain, even with God’s promise. In our lives today, there seems to be constant uncertainty. What should we do at times like this? God wants us to believe in His sure promises and go forward, even when we are lost in uncertainty. I believe that God wants us to endure in waiting and to seek His will.

Luke believes that it is God's will for each of us to testify to the gospel to the world. But Jesus' disciples were not ready to testify about the Messiah who had died on the cross and was resurrected. They were not ready to share the gospel with all people. They had to wait for the promised coming of the Holy Spirit, the power of God's presence. Only then could they testify of the gospel, and this did not happen immediately. For fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection, they waited with prayer to receive the Holy Spirit.

What did the disciples pray during these fifty days? When they testified to Jesus as the Christ, they knew they would be persecuted. They would have wondered whether it was right to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. They would have faced other troubling questions. It would have been difficult to decide how to witness the gospel without Jesus there to guide them. During this time, the people prayed together. We are called to testify that we are forgiven of our sins and to share the grace of God who has given us life. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, resurrected from the dead. To testify about Jesus, the disciples named their concerns and prayed to God until they received the Holy Spirit on the Pentecostal day.

When we face uncertainty, we hope that we can follow the paths of patience and prayer before rushing to act. As Jesus' disciples waited on the Holy Spirit and prayed, they may have experienced that their obstacles no longer seemed difficult or important. They would have had time to discern God's will by praying together. May we ask and pray together for God's will in difficult and uncertain times, and in all our plans.

7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”… 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. (Acts 1:7-8, 14)

Grace and Peace,

Kwangmin Shin
