------Quick Start Guide The Basics

The quick start guide will help you operate your recorder while using the default functions.

Detailed directions on the operation of your recorder menu system are available in the Main Menu section beginning on Page 6.

To turn the DVR on, apply 28VDC power. The DVR will automatically turn on.

To turn the DVR off, remove power.

Storage OptionsYour AVR8345 Digital Video Recorder includes a 4GB solid state internal memory. It can also accept USB drives, SD cards, and SATA drives.

------Quick Start Guide Knob Functions

Your recorder has two knobs: the Mode Control Knob and the Menu Select Knob. Included below are their default functions.

Mode Control Knob The Mode Control Knob allows you to choose one of three modes:

Play: Allows playback of previously recorded files.Stop: Stops playback or recording. While in stop recording. While in stop mode, you may access the recorder menu.Record: Allows you to record video.

The Menu Select Knob allows you to:

Access the Main Menu: While in Stop mode, push the Menu Select Knob to access the Main Menu.

Highlight and select a menu option: Highlight and select a menu option: Turn the Menu Select Knob to highlight a menu option. Push to select.

To view the recorder menu system, you must have your recorder output connected to a display.

Memory LEDs light up as the internal memory fills. One light means the memory is ¼ full, two lights mean the memory is ½ full, etc.

Video LEDThe Video LED means that an active video source is connected and ready to record.

Audio LEDThe Audio LED means that an active audio source is connected and ready to record.

Error LEDError LEDThe Error LEDs indicate a process error. They also indicate a process such as accessing the recorder menu is underway. Information, Warning, and Error Logs can be reviewed in the Logs Menu.

Photo SensorThe Photo Sensor senses light and automatically adjusts the keypad and LED brightness. This setting adjusts the keypad and LED brightness. This setting must be activated in the Panel Dimming submenu.

The Main Menu allows you to change the default settings of the recorder as well as view files for playback and export.

To Access the Main Menu:1. Turn the Mode Control Knob to STOP. 2. Press the Menu Select Knob.

To Exit the Main Menu: 1. Turn the Menu Select Knob to highlight Exit. 2. Press the Menu Select Knob to exit the main menu.

Files Menu

The Files Menu allows you to view and access a list of files which are recordings or snapshots saved to your memory devices.

To access the Files Menu: 1. Press on the front of your recorder.

You may sort the file list by Date, Type, and Media.Date: You may sort the files in descending order (newest to oldest) or ascending order (oldest to newest).Type: You may group pictures (jpeg) and video (H264) so it is easy to distinguish one from the other.Media: You may sort the files by where they are located within memory storage (INT, SATA, USB, SD). This may be found under memory storage (INT, SATA, USB, SD). This may be found under the DRV heading.

Files Menu

While in stop mode, you may play a file back, rewind, and fast forward.

To play a file back: 1. Access the files menu2. Highlight the file you would like to play back.3. Turn the Mode Control Knob to play mode. 4. The file will automatically display on your monitor.4. The file will automatically display on your monitor.

To rewind and fast forward during playback: 1. Press or . 2.To jog through video, turn the Menu Select Knob. Left to jog back. Right to jog forward.3. To stop rewinding or fast forwarding, press .

Magenta Markers appear in the progress bar during jog mode. A marker is shown at each playback start location. The most recent marker is the tallest.

The file name, time played, total time and file location are located on the top portion of the screen during playback.

Pressing or multiple times increases the speed by two times each press (i.e. 2X, 4X, 8X, etc…).

Your recorder will play recordings of up to 2 hours and 15 minutes in length. Longer files must be downloaded to a computer for playback.

Files Menu

The File Details submenu displays information such as the date and time the file was produced as well as the size and duration of the file. You may also transfer or delete the file.

To access File Details: 1. Access the Files Menu. 2. Highlight the file you would like to view and press the Menu Select Knob.

To transfer a file: 1. Highlight and select the external media device to which you will transfer files.2. The status bar will disappear when the transfer is complete.3. Once the status bar 3. Once the status bar disappears, you may remove your external memory device or continue transferring files.

To delete a file: 1. Highlight and select the file you would like to delete.2. Select Delete File.3. Confirm: Delete to delete. Confirm: Cancel to cancel.

! Once a file is deleted, it cannot be recovered.

Status Menu

The status menu allows you to view information about the recorder memory and the operation of your recorder system.

There are three different submenus in the status menu: Memory, System, and Logs. Each will be covered on the following pages.

To access the Status Menu: 1. Access the Main Menu. 2. Highlight and select Status.

The System submenu may contain useful information if you need to contact Avalex Technologies technical support.

In the System Submenu, you may view voltage, temperature, recorder runtime, and software version information.

The Memory submenu allows you to view information about your memory devices.

! Clear Memory will delete all files on a memory device. Once files are deleted, they cannot be recovered.

To clear an internal or external memory device: 1. Highlight and select the memory device you would like to clear. 2. Select the Confirm Clear option. 3. Confirm Clear to delete all files. Cancel Clear to cancel file delete. 4. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu. 4. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

To access the System submenu: 1. Access the Status Menu. 2. Highlight and select System.

The Logs submenu may be useful for troubleshooting.

The Prty heading contains three types of log information.Informational: Require no action. Listed in white text. Warning: May or may not require action. Listed in green text. Error: Indicate a process error. Listed in yellow text.

To export the log information to a memory device:1. Access the logs submenu.2. Highlight and select Export 3. Highlight the memory device which is the desired export destination.4. Press the Menu Select Knob to export. 5. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

You may sort the logs by three categories:

Date: Logs may be sorted in descending (Newest to Oldest) or ascending (Oldest to Newest) order. Code: You may sort the logs by their descriptions. Priority: Logs may be sorted by priority: Informational, Warning, or Error.

+ Exported log information will have a .bin file extension. These files can be sent to Avalex Technologies technical support for remote troubleshooting.

You may select the appropriate video input source, assign a star button function, set the record quality, and set the record overflow.

The Settings Menu allows you to alter the default settings of your recorder.

To Access the Settings Menu: 1. Access the Main Menu. 2. Highlight and select Settings.

Video Input Select allows you to select the video input you would like to record.

The Avalex Technologies AVR8345 accepts both composite video (RS170) and HD video (SMPTE-292).

You have the option to select Interlaced or Progressive Capture. The default setting for your HD recorder is Progressive Capture. Choose the capture mode that suits your equipment best.

To activate a video input: 1. Highlight and select the desired video input. The video input you are recording will be listed as Active.2. Highlight and select Interlaced or Progressive Capture. The capture setting you designate will be listed as Active.3. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

The Star Button Assignment menu allows you to designate one of four star button functions.

The four functions of the Star button are: 1. Audio Mute silences the audio input during REC mode.2. Snapshot takes a still photo of the current video input during STOP or REC mode. 3. Change Video Input switches the video input you are recording. Video input must be changed while in STOP mode. 4. Tag Video places up to eight markers in a video while 4. Tag Video places up to eight markers in a video while recording. You may revisit the markers during video playback.

Once you assign a Star button function, you may exit the menu and begin using the Star button during STOP or REC mode.

To assign a Star button function: 1. Highlight and select the desired function. The assigned function will be listed as Active.2. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

To alter the record quality: 1. Access the Main Menu. 2. Highlight and select Settings. 3. Select Record Quality. 4. Highlight and select your desired record quality. The current record quality is listed as Active. 5. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu. 5. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

! If Record Overflow is not active, the recorder will stop recording when the memory device becomes full.

To activate record overflow: 1. Access the Main Menu. 2. Highlight and select Settings. 3. Select Record Overflow. 4. Highlight and select Overflow On . 5. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

The Record Quality submenu allows you to alter the look of the video which you are recording.

Record Overflow allows the recorder to automatically switch recording from one memory device to another when full.

To use record overflow, it must be activated. As a default, record overflow is inactive

Making use of high quality recording can enhance the look of the final product but, the higher quality video will take up more memory.

Configuration Menu

The Configuration Menu allows you to set the local time zone on your recorder and alter the brightness of the front panel LEDs and buttons.

To access the Configuration Menu:1. Access the Main Menu.2. Highlight and select Configuration.

The Administration submenu is a section for troubleshooting by Avalex Technologies technicians. A code is required to access this submenu which should only be accessed if directed by Avalex Technologies Technical Support.

There are three front panel dimming options:Photosensor: The recorder photo sensor will automatically sense light levels and adjust the brightness accordingly.5V/28V input: This uses either 5V or 28V to set the brightness of your panel LEDs. It varies by voltage, not by current. Fixed:Fixed: You may adjust the LED and button brightness according to your personal preferences. The brightness level will remain the same unless altered in the Panel Dimming submenu.

The Panel Dimming submenu allows you to alter the brightness of the recorder front panel LEDs and buttons.

To alter the LED and button brightness levels: 1. Access the Panel Dimming submenu. 2. Highlight and select your desired dimming option. 3. For photosensor and fixed, a brightness scale will appear. 4. Highlight and select the brightness scale. 5. Turn the Menu Select Knob to set the desired brightness. Press to confirm. 6. Highlight and select Exit to exit the menu.

The Local Time Zone submenu allows you to set your local time on your recorder.

To alter the local time on your recorder: 1. Access the Local Time Zone submenu. 2. Highlight and select Offset from UTC. 3. Turn the Menu Select Knob to adjust the recorder time to your local time. Press to confirm. 4. Highlight and select Exit to close the menu.

To use your SATA drive, SD or USB, you must format your SATA drive to FAT32.

To Format Your External Memory Devices To FAT32: 1. Open My Computer (in Vista/7, open Computer). This can be accessed via the desktop shortcut or from the Start menu. 2. Insert the storage device you want to format. 3. Close the Autoplay window if it appears. 4. Close Windows Media Player and any other media players if they 4. Close Windows Media Player and any other media players if they appear. Media players will prevent the device from being formatted. 5. Right click the device that is to be formatted and select Format. 6. A format window should appear with several options. a. The capacity should match the target device’s actual memory size. b. The file system should be set to FAT32. DO NOT select NTFS. c. The allocation unit size is automatic and should be left alone. d. Volume Label is anything that can easily identify the storage device. d. Volume Label is anything that can easily identify the storage device. e. Deselect Quick Format for best results. 7. Select Start to begin the formatting process. 8. A prompt will ask again if you want to format the device. Select Ok. 9. Device formatting time will vary based on the transfer rate and capacity of the storage device.

Directions for Microsoft Windows based computers are included below. Reformatting of a storage device works well as a preventive measure. Be sure to perform this procedure on any suspect devices.

It is recommended to reformat the storage device whenever it is connected to a PC for data retrieval.

! Ensure that you select the correct drive when formatting to FAT32. Formatting your drive to FAT32 will erase all data on that drive.

The warranty contained herein shall be conditioned upon (i) Customer’s substantiation that the Product(s) have been stored, maintained, and operated in accordance with the Product specifications and standard industry practice and have not been damaged maintained, and operated in accordance with the Product specifications and standard industry practice and have not been damaged as a result of negligence, improper handling, or accident on the part of any person, (ii) Customer’s payments of all invoices for the Products or other charges to which Avalex Technologies may be entitled, (iii) Customer’s exclusive use of persons approved or authorized by Avalex Technologies to effect any repairs to the products, and (iv) Customer’s substantiation that no modification or alteration of the Products have been made.

Customer is responsible for all transportation costs to Avalex Technologies and redelivery to Customer. Avalex Technologies will return the product to the customer at Customer’s expense by the most economical method.

The warranty contained in this section is in lieu of and excludes all other warranties, express or implied, by operation of law or otherwise, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Loss or damage arising out of or in any way related to the manufacture, sale, delivery or use of the products shall be as provided herein and shall in no case manufacture, sale, delivery or use of the products shall be as provided herein and shall in no case exceed the lesser of the cost of repair or replacement.
