STATE REVIEWS
UTTAR PRADESH
Mineral ResourcesThe State is the principal holder of country's
andalusite & diaspore resources and possesses 78%
andalusite, 37% diaspore, 17% sillimanite and 10%
pyrophyllite. Important minerals occurring in the
State are: coal in Singrauli coalfields, Sonbhadra
district; and diaspore & pyrophyllite in Hamirpur,
Jhansi, Lalitpur and Mahoba districts. Naini area of
Allahabad district contains high quality silica sand,
an important source of glass sand, containing 98%
SiO2 and a very low Fe2O3 is found in Shankargarh,
Lohargarh in Allahabad district and also Bargarh in
Banda district. Silica sand is also found in Aligarh
and Chitrakoot districts.
Other minerals that occur in the State are
andalusite and calcite in Mirzapur district; bauxite
in Banda, Varanasi & Lalitpur districts; china clay &
dolomite in Banda and Sonbhadra districts; felspar
in Jhansi district; fireclay, limestone, potash &
sillimanite in Sonbhadra district; ochre in Banda
district; granite in Banda, Hamirpur, Lalitpur &
Mahoba districts; iron ore (hematite) and rock
phosphate in Lalitpur district (Table -1). The
reserves/resources of coal along with details of
coalfield are provided in Table-2.
Exploration & Development
During 2016-17, National Oil Companies (NOC)
continued their operations for exploration of oil
and gas in the Sta te. GSI a lso car r ied out
exploration in Sonbhadra, Jhansi & Hamirpur
districts. The details of exploration carried out by
GSI in the State are furnished in Table-3.
Production
Coal, limestone and sulphur were the mineral
items produced in Uttar Pradesh during 2016-17.
The value of minor minerals’ production was
estimated at ` 5,614 crore for the year 2016-17.
The number of reporting mines in Uttar Pradesh
was 2 in 2016-17 in case of MCDR minerals. (Table-4)

General exploration for andalusitewas carried out in segment 'A' ofPulwar block. The litho unitsexposed in the area are andalusitebearing phyllite, granite, intrusiveandalusite bearing quartz vein, milky white quartz vein and minorpegmatites. The andalusite crystalsare seen as disseminatedporphyroblasts within phyllite. Theandalusite crystals are long slender, prismatic in shape, with vitreouslusture. The most of the andalusitesare of "chiastolite" variety. Theandalusites are of "chiastolite”variety. There is no zonation in thearea. The andalusite crysta lvaria tion is noted from top tobottom of the boreholes. There isnot much varia tion in theconcentration of andalusitecrystals. Analytical values of Al2O3
and SiO 2 in 10 bedrock samplesranging from 7.81 to 31.01% and50.36 to 77.02%, respectively.Analytical values of Al2O3 and SiO2
in 05 pitting-trenching samplesrange from 33.26 to 38.55% and50.84 to 52.49%, respectively.
G3 level preliminary explorationfor andalusite was carried out insegment 'B' of Pulwar block bydetailed mapping. Andalusitebearing phyllite is the major lithounit in the area. The most of theandalu sites are of "chiastolite"variety. Analytical values of Al2O3
and SiO2 in 5 bedrock samples rangefrom 22.74 to 27.28% and 47.42to 56 .85%, respectively.Analytical values of Al2O3 and SiO2
in 5 pitting-tr enching sa mplesrange from 29.80 to 35.80% and47.95 to 52.49%, respectively.Analytical result of 12 core samplesshows Al2O3 and SiO2 values from21.50 to 28.62% and 5 2.34 to58.70%, respectively.

G4 level reconnaissance surveyfor REE mineralisation was takenup in Bundelkhand Granitoidcomplex Bahadur Kalan SijaraBuzurg area. Systematic samplinghad been carried out a long withpitting and trenching and channelsampling a t places. Oldermetamorphic and granitoidsbelonging to the BundelkhandGranitoid complex (BGC) areexposed in the mapped area. Someof the pegmatites from Lilwa areaare magnetite bearing. The maximum total REE in bedrock sample is 731 ppm.Soil samples from the area hasindicated REE of 854 ppm.
G4 level reconnaissance survey fortungsten and REE mineralisationwas taken up in Dudhi GneissicComplex, Deorhi-Barwatola area .Investigation for tungsten andREE mineralisation was carriedout by large scale mapping of130 sqkm along with bedrocksampling, pitting – trenching. REEmineralisation in the area is mainlyassociated with magnetite bearingpegmatite vein which intruded intogranite and gneisss. Analyticalresults indicate tota l REE rangingfrom 681 to 1710.55 ppm.Tungsten value up to 25.26 ppmhad been observed in pegmatitesamples from Deorhi area.
