How To Land A Summer Job

Students can begin by stopping by the University of Connecticut Department of Career Services. Career Services is located in room 203 of the Student Union and offers a variety of resources including Resume critiques, interviewing tips, and the Husky Career Link Recruiting System.

The Career Service Peer Advisor Team was more than helpful when I went in to visit. Kulsum Lalani (left) was nice enough to sit down and talk to me about the importance of continuously building a resume. “Most people make the mistake of thinking a resume is a one time ordeal. However what they don’t realize is that a resume needs to be constantly worked on and updated. Here at Career Services we help students do just that,” Lalani said.

Work Hard

Never underestimate the power of hard work. A good work ethic and transcript can get you a long way. University of Connecticut junior Holly Carpino, (photographed left) is seen working hard on the third floor of Homer Babbidge library. Long hours in the library have helped Carpino earn a GPA above 3.5 the past two semester and she is now enjoying the benefits of an internship this upcoming summer.

Using Your Resources

If possible, use any resources you may have to get a job interview. University of Connecticut senior journalism student Kelsey O’Toole used her resources in the UCONN Journalism department to get a spring semester internship with NBC. O’Toole (left) was nice enough to let me use the above photo from her last day at NBC in this presentation, the photo demonstrates the endless possibilities of hard work.

The Interview

A key component to earning a summer job is dressing well for the interview. Kyle Burns (left) and Nogs Largier (right) both dress appropriately for on campus interviews in this photo, in an attempt to earn summer jobs.

Doing Well In The Interview

Catching up with UCONN seniors Nick Bosse (left) and Tim Zubrinsky (right), they assured me that the most important component of nailing an interview was being sociable. “The key is to just be yourself and be outgoing. Interviews are a lot of pressure but its easier if you don’t think of it that way. I try to think of it as just another conversation I would have with a friend,” said Zubrinsky.
