What is a Muon Muon is like electron but about 200
times heavier
Decay rapidly into an electron and two neutrinos
Can be seen naturally in cosmic rays
![Page 7: Final Presentation](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58894e651a28abde5a8b6c59/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Basics of Muon G-2 All particles have a property called
spin
Spin vector rotates around magnetic field lines
Ex: Gyroscope will do the same thing but with gravitational field lines
This is called precession
![Page 8: Final Presentation](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58894e651a28abde5a8b6c59/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

The Basics of Muon G-2
Quantum Fluctuations
Particles popping in and out of existence could affect the precession of the muons
Theoretical Physicists can predict the effects of the fluctuations based on our current standard model
![Page 10: Final Presentation](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58894e651a28abde5a8b6c59/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Goals of the Experiment
Get a more precise measurement of the g value (magnetic moment) which can be found using the precession of the particle
If the measured value returned from the experiment is different from the theoretical value, it could mean that there are more particles than we currently know about

My Part
Lots of cleaning
![Page 13: Final Presentation](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022062821/58894e651a28abde5a8b6c59/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
My Part Cage Alignment in the bellow
chambers
0.5mm tolerance for all eight dimensions
Actual experiment will measure values to 0.14 ppm

Takeaways
More knowledge about particle physics
The importance of precision
Collaboration
You aren’t given a set of steps to follow. You have an end goal and discuss with others on how to reach it
Everyone has a small part to play in the experiment

Python Cosmic Ray Project
Worked on the project with several TARGET interns
Getting started with programming and python
Able to make a contribution to the project
