INTRODUCTION

DoctorS Nonprofit Consulting (DNC) was hired by Art & Creativity for Healing Inc. (ACFH) in

July of 2018 to provide an outcome evaluation for the program’s 2016-2018 Creative Tools for

Homeless Children & Their Families data for participants in ACFH workshops. ACFH facilitates

these “Art4Healing®” workshop programs at more than 35 hospitals, treatment centers, military

bases, schools and non-profit agencies throughout Southern California. Since 2000, more than

75,000 children and adults have participated in these classes and workshops.

METHOD

For this project, ACFH staff entered the data from their surveys into an online computer

program. DNC then downloaded data spreadsheets in both excel and SPSS formats. DNC

reviewed the data and addressed any data entry concerns with ACFH staff. SPSS statistical

software was used for the evaluation process which was conducted by consultants in July and

August of 2018. For this project, the program’s data collection procedures were reviewed.

Initially, a series of frequency tables were run to establish basic program statistics. Following

this, a series of correlations and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were computed on

the data. A full statistical report of the test outcomes is included in appendix A. Correlations are

useful in determining how closely one variable relates to another variable. ANOVAs are useful

for comparing differences between groups.

KEY FINDINGS

Overall, it is significant to say that 9 out of 10 (97.8%) of the Creative Tools for Homeless

Children & Their Families participants reported that they were satisfied with their workshop

From the adult questionnaire, 82% of participants strongly agreed that the workshop helped them

express their emotions. Eighty-two percent of participants strongly agreed that they felt better

after the workshop. Ninety percent of adults strongly agreed that the instructor was

approachable.

From the child questionnaire, 89% of participants agreed that the workshop helped them express

their emotions. Ninety percent of child participants agreed that they felt better after the

workshop. Ninety-two percent of children agreed that the instructor cared about them.

Three out of 4 (74.74%) of OCDE ACCESS Skyview School for the Homeless youth

participants strongly agreed and 9 out of 10 (92.49%) youths thought (either agreed/strongly

agreed) it was great. Ninety-two percent of participants agreed that the workshop helped them

express their emotions. Eighty-seven percent of participants agreed that they felt better after the


For future workshops, 92.4% of children and adult participants agreed that they would refer a

friend or family member to this workshop.

The primary reason that the child/teen participants took workshops was I like Art (86.5%) and

Anxiety/Stress (47.22%) for adult participants.

When looking at the adult outcome data, there were six significant differences among the

workshop locations and eight outcome variables. The adult clients that were in the OC Rescue

Mission, Regina House and Project Hope locations consistently rated the program higher than

the averages in the following 6 outcome ratings: 1) The workshop was great; 2) The workshop

helped me express my emotions; 3) I feel better after taking this; 4) I would tell a friend or

family member to attend this workshop; 5) I want to take another Art& Creativity for healing

workshop (within the year). 6) Overall, I like this workshop (I am satisfied).

When combined with the children, there was also 8 significant differences. OC Rescue Mission

reported higher than averages and OCDE ACCESS Skyview School for the Homeless program

reported lower averages in the eight areas: 1) The workshop was great [OC Rescue Mission

(M=4.96, n=107) , OCDE ACCESS Skyview School for the Homeless (M=4.64, n=278) Total

participants reported higher averages on 1) This workshop helped me share my feelings/ express

my emotions; 2) The instructor was approachable and appeared to care about the participants;

and 3) I would tell a friend or family member to attend this workshop compared to children

participants.

RESULTS

Overall Data Statistics

This data set consists of responses by 1250 Creative Tools for Homeless Children & Their

Families referred individuals who received ACFH services between the period of July 2016 and

June 2018. Of those, participants either completed the adult survey (n=569) or the child survey

(n=681). Generally, when working with statistical evaluation, we like to see a large sample. Data

sets of this size (n=1250) are generally regarded to be an accurate indicator of the measured

items.

Frequency Tables

The majority of the participants in the Creative Tools for Homeless Children & Their Families

participants were children (54.5%). The remaining 45.5% were completed by adults.

Approximately 1/4 of the participants indicated their age (n=336). Of those that did include the

ages ranged from 5-64, with the average age being 23.9. It should be noted that less than ¼ of the

child questionnaire participants included their age thus skewing the data.

Hispanic/Latino(a) made up 57.9% of combined participants followed by Caucasians at 18.4%

(see fig. 1). Seventeen percent of the participants did not list their ethnicity. Please note that the

actual ethnicity is included in the figure below is for those that reported their ethnicity.

Santa Fe Springs was the city of residence for 30.5% of the workshop participants followed by

Orange at 23.9%. These locations were used by participants due to the location of the shelter

they were living in at the time. There were however 2.2% (n=27) of participants not indicating a

city of residence.

When combining the locations for all the Creative Tools for Homeless Children & Their

Families program participants, the majority were from the L.A. CADA (Allen house) (32.1%)

followed by Illumination Foundation Recuperative Care Mental Health Center for the Homeless

and Mentally Disabled (30.9%) and OCDE ACCESS Skyview School for the Homeless (22.4%).

“Expressing Feelings with Color” was the title of 75.5% of workshops for creative tools for

homeless program participants followed by “Creative Tools for Homeless” (21.3%) (see fig. 3).

The participants generally have multiple psychological reasons for attending the workshops.

Each participant was asked to indicate all the reasons and then select their top reason for taking

the class. Some participants selected multiple top reasons for taking the class and thus those

individuals were removed from dataset. The primary reason that the child participants took

workshops was I like Art (86.5%) and Anxiety/Stress (47.22%) for adult participants. See figures

4, 5 & 6 for the reasons of those that indicated reasons. The top four “other” category that

represents 38.89% for adults included own interest 52.75%, program 15%, addiction 7.7%.

great. Eighty-two percent of participants strongly agreed that the workshop helped them express

their emotions. Eighty-two percent of participants strongly agreed that they felt better after the

workshop. Ninety percent of adults strongly agreed that the instructor was approachable. See

Figure 7 for the program outcomes on all eight questions on the scale from 1-5.

great. Eighty-nine percent of participants strongly agreed that the workshop helped them express

their emotions. Ninety percent of participants agreed that they felt better after the workshop.

Ninety-two percent of children agreed that the instructor cared about them. See Figure 8 for the

program outcomes on all eight questions on the scale from 1-5.

When combining the adults and children together, 97.8% of the participants agreed/strongly

agreed that overall, they liked the workshop. For future workshops, 92.4% of children & adult

participants agreed that they would refer a friend or family member to this workshop.

Furthermore, 9 out of the 10 (95.3%) of all participants agreed that they themselves would take

another workshop from the program.

Overall, it is significant to say that 9 out of 10 (97.8%) of the Creative Tools for Homeless

Children & Their Families participants reported that they were satisfied with their workshop.

The participants were primarily referred by an agency (78.7%). Followed by invited by a friend

(4.4%) and health care provider (3.9%).

Youth Participants Correlations

Correlation (Pearson r) tests were run for data from the eight questions answered on the

participant survey with a rating. Correlations are useful in determining how closely one variable

relates to another variable. Tests for the child participants were run comparing: 1) This

workshop was great. 2) This workshop helped me share my feelings. 3) The instructor cared

about me. 4) The instructor was on time.5) I feel better after taking this workshop. 6) I would tell

a friend or family member to attend this workshop. 7) I want to take another Art & Creativity for

Healing workshop.8) Overall, I like this workshop.

In all of the eight rating variables listed above, there was a significant correlation for the child

participant’s data. This indicates that there is a strong correlation between each question and a

reliable questionnaire measuring workshop outcomes. For the children, all of the seven rating

variables listed above were significant. The strongest correlation was the overall satisfaction and

they felt better following the workshop (r=.701, <.01). See detailed correlations in Appendix.

Adult Participants Correlations

relates to another variable. Tests for the adult participants were run comparing: 1) The workshop

valued my time; 5) I felt better after taking this workshop; 6) I would refer a friend/family

member to attend this workshop; 7) I am interested in taking another Art & Creativity for

Healing workshop within the next year; 8) Overall, I am satisfied with this Art & Creativity for

Healing workshop.

The strongest correlation was the relationship between overall satisfaction and if they would take

another workshop (r=.729, p<.01) in the eight outcome questions. See detailed correlations in

Appendix.

Combined Correlations

In all of the eight rating variables listed above, there was a significant correlation for all

participant’s data. This indicates that there is a strong correlation between each question and a

reliable questionnaire measuring workshop outcomes. For the children, all of the seven rating

variables listed above were significant. The strongest correlation was the overall satisfaction and

they felt better following the workshop (r=.696, <.01). See detailed correlations in Appendix.

ANOVA’s

One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were computed on five categorical variables and

eight numerical values for the 2016-2018 data participants. ANOVAs use statistics to compare

categorical variables and numerical variables. The five categorical variables were: 1) Workshop

Title, 2) Workshop Location, 3) Reason for Participating, and 4) Ethnicity. The eight numerical

values were rates of: 1) How Great the Workshop, 2) Emotional Expression, 3) Caring

Instructor, 4) Instructor Time Management/Comfortable Sharing, 5) Effect of Workshop, 6)

Willingness to refer a friend, 7) Interest in additional workshops, and 8) Overall Satisfaction.

When looking at the significance of ANOVA results, anything less than .05 is generally

acceptable in research. A score at less than .05 indicates that the differences in the mean values

between these groups, given the sample size, is so large that similarly strong findings would be

unlikely to recur by chance, even if we were replicated this study a thousand times.

Categorical Variable: Workshop Title

There was a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test computed for the categorical variable

of Homeless Program location for the 2016-2018 participant data. The 2 Workshop titles for the

homeless child and their families programs were 1) Expressing Feelings with Color and 2) 4-

week Beginning Creativity Series. For the adults the two programs were 1) Expressing Feelings

with Color or 2) Creative Tools for the Homeless. There were no differences reported between

the two programs and the outcomes.

Categorical Variable: Workshop Location


of Homeless Program location for the 2016-2018 participant data. The 8 homeless programs

were 1) American Family Housing (children and adults), 2) Illumination Foundation

Recuperative Care Mental Health Center for the Homeless and Mentally Disabled (children and

adults), 3) IF Recuperative & Recovery Care Center (adults) 4) OC Rescue Mission (children

and adults), 5) L.A. CADA – Allen House (adults), 6) Regina House (adults), 7) Project Hope

Alliance (adults and children), and 8) OCDE ACCESS Skyview School for the Homeless. There

were no significant differences between the workshop locations and the program outcomes for

the children only. With the adults there were significant differences in 6 areas. Of the clients that

were in the OC Rescue Mission, Regina House and Project Hope locations consistently rated the

program higher than the averages 1) The workshop was great - OC Rescue Mission (M= 4.94,

n=72), Project Hope Alliance (M=5.00, n=6), Regina House (M=5.00, n=27) compared to the

average (M=4.88, n=; 564). 2) The workshop helped me express my emotions - OC Rescue

There was three significant difference among the primary reasons for taking the class. The

workshop (M=4.35, n=20) reported lower compared to the average (M=4.86, N=1021).

Categorical Variable: Ethnicity


client ethnicity for the 2014-2016 combined adult and child data. The six types of client

ethnicities were 1) Caucasian, 2) African American, 3) Hispanic/Latino(a) American, 4) Asian

American/Vietnamese, 5) Other (including bi-racial). The client indicated their ethnicity on their

client survey. There was one significant difference in the eight outcome measures among the five

ethnic groups. For adults, African American participants would less likely tell a friend or family

member to attend this workshop (M=4.69, n=70) compared to the group average (M= 4.82,

N=513). However, when combined with all the youth/child participants there was no significant

differences among ethnicities. See tables/figures in appendix.

Independent Samples T-test

The Independent Samples T-Test compares the means of two independent groups in order to

determine whether there is statistical evidence that the associated population means are

significantly different. The two groups (child and adult) were compared among the eight

outcome variables 1) How Great the Workshop, 2) Emotional Expression, 3) Caring Instructor,

4) Instructor Time Management/Comfortable Sharing, 5) Effect of Workshop, 6) Willingness to

refer a friend, 7) Interest in additional workshops, and 8) Overall Satisfaction.



my emotions (t=-2.23, p=0.026); 2) The instructor was approachable and appeared to care about

the participants (t=-3.00, p=0.003); and 3) I would tell a friend or family member to attend this

workshop (t=-4.41, p=0.00) compared to children participants. See appendix for detail

differences and graphs.

LIMITATIONS

While the data was evaluated by consultants independently from program management and staff,

the program staff did collect all responses and enter the data into SurveyMonkey. Overall, this

data evaluation has a respectable sample size and can generally be regarded to be an accurate

indicator of the measured items.

It is important to emphasize that while correlations show the degree to which two numerical

variables co-relate, they cannot measure other types of relationships. Because two variables are

correlated does not necessarily mean that one variable causes the other to occur. The one

significant correlation we did find was for the eight rating variables on the participant

questionnaire which are all highly face valid.

ANOVAs can only be used when the groups are independent from each other. When completing

a one-way ANOVA we are not able to see the possible interactions between the multiple

numerical variable. Finally, we are not able to find the actual cause of the difference in means,

only that there is a difference.
