CHRIS SHUTTLEWORTH THE PEOPLES COMMON OUGD505 •THE BRIEF• 1 THE BRIEF To reintroduce and encourage small talk amongst people. Small talk is the gateway into anything that may follow, such as great friendships, professional acquaintances or just hearing somebody’s story. Due to the dominance of technology is society peoples are los- ing the ability to speak confidently with strangers and much prefer to remain introverted and focus on their phones. CONCEPT / PROPOSITION To design a bar as a social environment, the bar will host various themed nights that are designed to bring like minded people together and engage in small talk and further conver- sation. Using the structure of AMA’s (see background) the bar will have touch screens built in the tables so that customers can interact with the tables around them and also the featured ‘celebrity’. BACKGROUND A recent online success is the use of AMA’s in which users submit questions to celebrities/ scientists/ politicians, the com- munity then vote for the best questions which will get an- swered by the interviewee. This allows the online community to debate and discuss current issues. I want to intoduce this idea into a real life setting where the users that would be ask- ing the questions are together in person and can converse and discuss with each other. TARGET AUDIENCE The audience is going to be young professionals, post gradu- ates, peoples interested in current affairs and networking. CONSIDERATIONS The aesthetics of the bar must be light hearted and welcoming whilst also attracting an intellectual and ‘non-rowdy’ clientele. The project could also explore an online element where users can interact with each other on the forum and request vari- ous guests/ suggest new ideas. This could also lead to people organising meetings in the bar on the forum. The design of the forum must be consistent with the printed materials and be a unique and pleasant web experience. TONE OF VOICE Sophisticated but slightly tongue in cheek, professional but not pretentious. DELIVERABLES Promotional material, menu, events program, receipts, wayfind- ing material. THE BRIEF

To reintroduce and encourage small talk amongst people. Small talk is the gateway into anything that may follow, such as great friendships, professional acquaintances or just hearing somebody’s story. Due to the dominance of technology is society peoples are los-ing the ability to speak confidently with strangers and much prefer to remain introverted and focus on their phones.

CONCEPT / PROPOSITION

To design a bar as a social environment, the bar will host various themed nights that are designed to bring like minded people together and engage in small talk and further conver-sation. Using the structure of AMA’s (see background) the bar will have touch screens built in the tables so that customers can interact with the tables around them and also the featured ‘celebrity’.

BACKGROUND

A recent online success is the use of AMA’s in which users submit questions to celebrities/ scientists/ politicians, the com-munity then vote for the best questions which will get an-swered by the interviewee. This allows the online community to debate and discuss current issues. I want to intoduce this idea into a real life setting where the users that would be ask-ing the questions are together in person and can converse and discuss with each other.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The audience is going to be young professionals, post gradu-ates, peoples interested in current affairs and networking.

CONSIDERATIONS

The aesthetics of the bar must be light hearted and welcoming whilst also attracting an intellectual and ‘non-rowdy’ clientele. The project could also explore an online element where users can interact with each other on the forum and request vari-ous guests/ suggest new ideas. This could also lead to people organising meetings in the bar on the forum. The design of the forum must be consistent with the printed materials and be a unique and pleasant web experience.

TONE OF VOICE

Sophisticated but slightly tongue in cheek, professional but not pretentious.

DELIVERABLES

Promotional material, menu, events program, receipts, wayfind-ing material. Touch Screen Interface. Design of website / forum.

COMMUNITABLES

The main USP of the bar is that the entire place will be connected with each other. Using touch screen technology in the tables users will be able to submit questions to the interviewees, vote for the best questions and also talk with other tables via IM. There will also be menus and other information available on the screens but all orders will be placed in person. The screens would be built into old oak tables to represent the new online style of communication being relocated into a more traditional environment.

AESTHETICS

The aesthetics must portray a friendly, comfortable and intellectual atmosphere and make the guests feel like they play an important role within the venue and that they are a part of a community.

REAL SMALL TALK

To initially promote the establishment I want to use small talk to its full advantage. I have designed an invitation that will be targeted at clientele.A dedicated group of socially confident people will take invitations into relevant places, instigate small talk with a targeted customer and leave them with the invitation and vanish like an assassin.

The invitations could also be made to promote particular events. For example if the developers of a game were doing an AMA then invitations could be targeted at people shopping at Game etc.

WEBSITE

The website will be consistent with the design of printed products and offer a comfortable and unique web experience. The forum will be the most important part of the website where users can interact with events aswell as speaking to each other and potentially arrange meetings/ gatherings of particular groups. The majority of forums are very text heavy and difficult to jump in on a comment thread and catch up with what is going on. I will design the forum with much more space and a slower pace that will be more user friendly.

INTERFACE

The touch screen interface of the tables must be designed to show appropriate content and be easy to navigate, especially if it is going to be used by intoxicated customers.

INTERFACE CONCEPT

Rather than just transferring the websit design to a touch screen application I wanted the design to be relevant to the fact that the screens are in tables. The main page will be like this, where each item links to a relevant page e.g. Diary = listings, watch = opening times etc. Preferrably this display will have some movement in it such as a flickering candle and a ticking watch.
