Filton Town Council will write to South Glos after a £1.2m package of improvements for Filton Hill School was rejected.

The town council voted unanimously to express its anger after the package, which dates back to 2006, was thrown out last month.

Filton’s South Glos councillors Ian Scott, Roger Hutchinson and Adam Monk urged South Glos to uphold the original decision but despite their protestations, the project has been shelved.

Cllr Hutchinson told Filton Town Council: “In December 2006 the concil committed £1.2m for Filton Hill School, of which the main part was to provide a proper kitchen.

“Given that Filton Hill is in the priority ward of Conygre and that the Government has decided the age group of children who attend the school are to receive free school meals, this is

a real blow to the school and the children attending it.

“We made a joint submission to the committee asking that members refuse to take the decision, which would leave the school without a proper kitchen and acting as a serving school, not a cooking school.”

“This project has been in the pipeline for many years and our community thought that our funding fight for the improvement work at Filton Hill Primary School had been won when the long-term capital programme was approved.

“We know that the council’s money is tight, but that is no excuse for moving the goalposts and dumping the scheme now.

“Unfortunately the combined votes of Conservatives and Lib Dems agreed to take the money away and use elsewhere.

“The council made a clear commitment to the school and should stick to it.”

A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said: “Members on the Children and Young People Committee agreed to recommend that council remove the Filton Hill Primary School project from its Capital Programme.

“The planned kitchen improvement work was not part of the £1.2 million project and is still planned to go ahead before the new school year begins.

“Whilst there was historical commitment to the funding of accommodation improvements at Filton Hill Primary School, this was part of the previous government’s now obsolete National Primary Capital Programme.

“Government funding now prioritises basic need and urgent condition related work only and local authorities no longer receive funding for suitability and improvement works in schools.

“We are faced with reducing limited resources and this project no longer met the funding criteria.

“The £1.2 million will now be reallocated to priority condition schemes.”

“I tried to remain calm, but my staff were quite hysterical. There isn’t a lot you can do really, apart from keeping calm and making sure everyone is safe.

“The police arrived urgently - they were very quick to respond.”

The Post Office was, for many years, designed with security glass but since March 2014 it has been open plan - a feature used in many post offices and banks.

He added: “The barriers came down in March, which no-one was really happy about.

“The banks had already done something similar and it was proved that it didn’t work.

“It is friendlier - but it puts our lives in danger.”

Forensic officers spent around three hours in the post office seeking clues, whilst both the shop and adjoining newsagents remained closed.

Although customers and staff were shaken, no one was physically hurt in the incident.

Police investigating the raid are appealing for help to trace the origins of the wooden banister, which was left at the scene.

In addition, they would also like to hear from anyone who has information about the red motorcycle which the pair used to flee from the scene.

the incident, was found shortly after the robbery at the BAWA health and leisure centre in Southmead Road.

Witnesses have come forward who saw two men as passengers in a black car in the vicinity - at least one was wearing a motorbike helmet. According to police, enquiries also suggest that the car may have been in the Station Road area of Henbury

between midday and 1pm.Detective Jill Kells said: “We

have recovered a red Honda motorbike which had been stolen overnight on July 16 to Thursday morning.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who was in any of the shops in Church View, Filton, between about 11.30am and midday on Thursday, or around BAWA at that time. We believe

this is an isolated incident and have recovered a suspect vehicle and the wooden weapon which was left at the scene.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “The people who run our Post Office branches provide important services to local communities.

“Any robbery or attempted robbery is very traumatic for the victims and we will be supporting

the police in their efforts.”l A man was arrested on

suspicion of robbery on the evening of the raid, but has been released on bail pending further enquiries, and a second suspect has been arrested in connection with the robbery.

There was a lot of interest in the community garden which was looking spectacular thanks to the work of the team of volunteers who work tirelessly to continually improve the area. Bands entertained the crowds all day, including Good Night Lois, Just 3 Harmony, Fatman Swings and Doreen Doreen while Pyramid Youth Club put on a display of judo skills. Big plans for Filton’s new charityFilton’s new charity, FACE (Foundation for Active Community Engagement) has been officially launched.

The charity held an open day last month when they outlined their plans and - despite poor weather - hosted a barbecue and fun activities.

The new charity, which aims to build on the previous work of the St Andrew’s Methodist Youth Centre, will offer youth and community work for a wide range of ages.

The organisation has changed to charitable status to enable them to access more grant funds.

At a meeting of the town council, Debbie Teml - who will be at the helm of the new organisation - told councillors about the group’s plans.

She said: “We had been concerned about the future of

the organisation so we decided to set up a charity.

“We will still be located in

the same building but FACE will pay rent to St Andrew’s. As a registered charity we can apply

for more grants. We will still have strong links to the church and the minister is on the trustee board but this is very much a community project.

“Among our projects will be the Duke of Edinburgh Award, continuing to facilitate Filton’s youth council and also a project concerning anti-bullying in schools.”

For older members of the community, the centre also hosts Silver Surfers on Thursday mornings, to teach IT skills and provide the chance to socialise.

The charity’s management team is already planning new services, including support groups for adults, family activities and “preparation for work” courses for people on the autistic spectrum aged over 19, which will start in September.

People can also find out more at www.facefilton.org.uk.

Filton pupils should no longer lose out on places due to the town’s schools’ closeness to the Bristol boundary after work by a local councillor.

Cllr Ian Scott, right, has been calling for Filton primaries to have their own ‘area of prime responsibility’ and last month South Glos Council backed his scheme, to start in 2015.

He said: “Residents in Filton have been raising concerns that they are missing out on Filton school places to others in Bristol, both in terms of the 2 mile sibling rule and proximity to the school.

“I proposed a new Filton Primaries Consortium Area of Prime Responsibility (APR). The schools included in the consortium are Filton Hill Primary School, Charborough Road Primary School and Shield Road Primary School.

“The proposed area is defined by the railway to the north, South Gloucestershire Council’s administrative boundary to the south and to the west and the railway to the east.

“The pupil projections show that demand will increase further over the next five years. In particular, there is severe

pressure on primary places across Filton and parents in the area are finding it increasingly difficult to obtain a place at their nearest schools.

“The pressure for places is further impacted by increasing numbers of Bristol resident children seeking primary school places in South

Gloucestershire. The new Area of Prime

Responsibility will:• Enable Filton Primary

Schools more readily to serve the needs of the local community. Children living in the Filton area will be given priority for admission to Filton Hill Primary School, Charborough Road Primary School and Shield Road Primary School. This will help to reduce the number of children who are referred to schools outside of their immediate locality;

• Help secure a local school place for children within a reasonable distance from their home address without the need for transport assistance;

• Balance the supply of places with projected demand and continue to ensure there are sufficient school places in South Gloucestershire.

REACHING YOUR

POTENTIAL

Remember what it was like to be a teenager? a mix of possibilities, opportunities, hormones and boundaries, homework and exams, people to see and places to go. Learning to be independent can be hard enough. If a Young Person has had distressing or troubled early childhood experiences, it can just add more stress to an already emotional time.

Foster carers for teenagers need particular skills to carry out what can be a very varied and challenging job - sensitivity to a Young Persons situation, patience, tolerance and understanding. A foster carer needs to provide stability, safety and secure boundaries to keep them safe, while also encouraging them to spread their wings and take their first steps towards becoming happy, responsible adults. Most importantly, you need to be there for them, have good communication skills, provide consistent boundaries, negotiate effectively when difficulties arise and have a sense of humour!

We will provide support 24/7 and extensive training plus a financial package.

NewsFilton social club raises £1,760It’s been another record-breaking fundraising year for Filton and District Social Club after they raised a whopping £1760 for Diabetes UK.

This year was the third time regulars - led by Terry Hamilton and Martin Sedland - had supported the cause, in memory of club stalwart Brian Jarrett who was a diabetes sufferer.

The club hosted a day of music, including local performer Jack, and fun for all the family with the main event a big raffle of prizes donated by many local businesses.

Members gathered after the event to present the cheque to Diabetes UK.

Terry said: “There are so many people we would like to thank, especially the club and their chairman Anne Price, the businesses who donated prizes and of course all those who took part. With Brian, it brought it home to us about the effect of

diabetes and we wanted to do what we could to help.”

In previous years club members raised £1,200 and £1,500 a well as donating a bench in memory of Brian.

The organisers wanted to thank the following who donated to the raffle: Gales Butcher, Air balloon, Concorde, Fruit Tree, Filton Feast, Lin Seng, Ablectric, Only Vice, Farm Foods,

The Plough, Costcutter, Jane Bridgeman, Bristol City, Glos Cricket, and American Golf, and finally four golf clubs - Filton, Bowood, Vale of Glamorgan and Henbury.

Regular screech of brakes hereI own the optician’s shown in the picture illustrating the letter from Cllr Doug Daniels about the above crossing.

It is rare that an hour goes by during the day without a screech of brakes as someone misjudges the roundabout.

We have had an optimistic driver somehow getting his car stuck between the telephone exchange box and our front window, and a car trying to come through our front door.

My contacting the council

to suggest better warning of the roundabout when driving south down the A38 was ignored.

When I contacted the council in response to their posters about the ‘improvements’ being made to the A38, I was told that the green tarmac on the roundabout was to lessen the number of accidents that had happened at the site.

Since several of these involved cyclists unwisely trying to undertake cars turning left I am unsure how this was supposed to work, but that is another problem.

In contrast to this, Councillor Daniels was told that there

Cost cutting is needed by FTCFilton council staff seem happy to cut Elm Park grass at 8am on a Saturday morning, waking me up, but not cut their running costs!

Congratulations to chair of

council Teml for cutting costs in his day job and winning an award, can he now set out his plans for doing the same for this small parish council?

When I complained to council staff about the time they cut the grass, all I received was a response saying they can’t satisfy everyone. Charming.

I also see that council staff numbers have increased, not decreased! Too many chiefs.

This council think they have a licence to print money.

Let’s have financial information please on your spending ... tell Filton where our money is going.

Not happy with water at stallMe and my family went to the Filton Festival recently. It was not as big as most years, but it was still fun with lots of things to do.

But the worst was the Twinning Stall pay a pound and get a wine bottle full of tap water. or pay 50p and get a cola bottle full of tap water.

I know these stalls need to make money but that was terrible and it put me right of the whole day.

After that I took my family home.

I hope this stall never gets to go to other fete. Also I hope Filton council stop this kind of stall.

Flora, Winterbourne.

Isn’t Filton a smokeless zone?My wife and I were having a lovely summer evening in our garden with all the house windows open when some cretin decides to light a bonfire.

I thought Filton was a smokeless zone, some people need to consider there neighbours before they light a bonfire.

Disgruntled resident

Enjoyed festival without funfairCongratulations to council staff for the latest festival which had plenty for all our family and I enjoyed some of the music too, especially the vocal harmony group.

I do wish to say that I think the day was much improved by having the scaled down funfair which I never enjoy and which I know divides opinion.

I have always found it overpriced and somewhat lacking in ‘fun’ so I wouldn’t complain if this format continued in years to come.

During the summer months we can have an increase in the number of incidents involving what we call Rogue Traders. These are people who call door-to-door and take advantage of people by using high-pressure sales techniques. Their work is often overpriced, poor quality or completely unnecessary.

Even worse, the people they call on are often elderly or vulnerable, and becoming a victim can have an overwhelming effect on their health and confidence.

We haven’t had any incidents in Filton recently, but there have been one or two in other parts of the Avon and Somerset area.

It’s not a common crime, but it can have such an impact that it’s worth reminding everyone of the easy steps which are really effective in deterring these criminals:

• Keep doors and windows secure and remember, if you’re not sure, don’t open the door

• Have a safety chain fitted and always use it before opening the door to strangers

• Check the identity of the caller by telephoning

the company they claim to be from. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider. Genuine companies will not object.

• Genuine callers won’t mind making an appointment for a date when you can have someone with you. This gives you time to check their identity too.

• Call a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them.

• Many service providers provide password schemes and it can be helpful to sign up to these.

When unannounced callers knock at your door they should know the password if they are genuine.

• Remember to look out for your neighbours and if you see something suspicious call us straight away on 999

Remember it’s your doorstep, your decision.

You can get more advice on doorstep crime from www.avonandsomerset.police.uk or South Gloucestershire Council www.southglos.gov.uk/business/trading-standards

Could learning change your life this summer? This year at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College we have something different with two separate brochures on offer: professional and leisure. Those interested in learning something new or improving their skill set can collect the latest booklets at any of the college’s campuses, download them from the college website or call 0800 0567 253.

SGS College offers a wide variety of part-time courses to cater for a range of different needs. These courses run at various dates throughout the year and are tailored to fit around busy lives.

Vice principal Sara-Jane Watkins said: “Every year, we welcome thousands of part-time learners looking for a new challenge. Whatever your reason for coming to college – to take up a new leisure activity, boost your career with professional qualifications, improve your health and wellbeing or to try something completely different – we have the right course for you.

“We have plenty of open days and evenings, as well as general advice and guidance sessions throughout the year.”

One student who has changed her life with part-time education

is Zoe Warner, who recently won the South West final of the VQ Learner of the Year Awards 2014.

She was awarded this after starting her own company, which uses complementary therapy to help people who have suffered trauma or injury in the armed forces. She then launched another organisation to offer affordable beauty treatments

for all.Zoe started a VTCT

Level 3 Diploma in Complementary Therapies with SGS College back in September 2010, completing in July 2011. The mother of six had experienced massage and reflexology treatments previously and knew how much

complementary therapies helped people. She also wanted to start a company that would allow everyone to be able to access therapies by making them not just a luxury, but an essential entitlement that everyone should be able to enjoy and afford.

Find out more about the courses on offer with our new guides.

Did you know, Kennel Cough isn’t just caught in Kennels?

Veterinary surgeon and practice partner Michael Parry of Vets4Pets Filton says “Kennel Cough is a highly contagious disease that can affect dogs of all ages.

“Although, as the name suggests, Kennel Cough is often picked up when dogs stay in boarding kennels, they are just as likely to catch it whenever they are close to other dogs, so at training classes and even whilst playing in the park.”

“Most boarding kennels won’t accept your dog unless they have been vaccinated beforehand.

“Dogs will normally require to be vaccinated at least three weeks before they visit the kennels” says Michael. “It is

also important to know that your dog’s yearly booster vaccination does not protect against Kennel Cough.”

For more information on Kennel Cough or advice on keeping your pet happy and healthy visit vets4pets.com/filton or contact Michael Parry and his team at Vets4Pets Filton on 0117 969 8400.

A group of UWE students led by Mark and Elena Packham gathered at Filton Park Pre-School Playgroup to shave their heads to a support fellow student who is losing her hair due to chemotherapy treatment following a cancer diagnosis.

Friends and family said they were very proud that this group of young people organised this themselves in aid of Cancer Research and they have raised more than £2,000 with the figure still rising.

People in Filton are being invited to give their views on the growing idea of self-building your own house.

South Glos Council is running an online survey so that we can find out how many people are interested in building their own home, and what help is needed to achieve this.

The information provided will help officials understand the demand for self-build in South Gloucestershire and inform the development of planning policy to support self-build in the area.

Self-build housing can be described as any instance where a person is involved in some way in the production of their new home rather than buying from a speculative home builder. The level of involvement can therefore vary greatly.

There are also examples of community self-build. The survey can be viewed online at www.southglos.gov.uk/consultation and we welcome comments until the closing date on Friday 15 August. Comments can be submitted on 01454 868154.

with Deborah Harvey‘Goblin Market’: An Eldritch Glimpse, Hamilton House, Stokes Croft

‘Goblin Market’ is the recently-formed An Eldritch Glimpse Theatre Company’s first production and its treatment of Christina Rossetti’s strange and sensuous narrative poem is ambitious, mixing traditional story-telling with technological innovation.

In this production, the poem is narrated in a somewhat incantatory fashion by an elderly woman who very much resembles my strait-laced great-grandmother in a photograph taken in the 1940s. This is in stark contrast to a backdrop of flashing, techni-coloured images of woodland and trees and an improvised soundscape of dissonant music, against which the dream-like

story of two sisters who come under the thrall of a group of goblin greengrocers is played out, partly by actors and partly by dolls.

With so much going on at once, it would take a deft director to incorporate each element into a coherent whole, and unfortunately this production does seem muddled at times. For one thing, I found the changes back and forth from dolls to actors disruptive rather than ground-breaking; for another, the combined video footage and sound, which are intended to induce a hypnotic atmosphere, became rather wearing. I suspect this is because they were used for too long intervals, and there was no

modulation in tenor or tone to mirror the various episodes of the poem.

An interesting twist at the end was to have the narrator hold up one of the kernels of goblin fruit, thus revealing her to be one of the two sisters in the tale. However, I couldn’t help thinking that if she really had been enthralled by the goblins’ spell almost to the point of death, to be saved only by the courage and love of her sister, something of this experience would have been reflected in her telling of her own story, which would have had at least some remembered emotion in it. As it was, the great revelation, like the reading, felt rather flat.

NewsNew GP and health centre near FiltonThe new housing development at Charlton Hayes, near Filton, is to get a health centre and doctor’s surgery alongside residential care facilities for elderly people following the sale of part of the development site from Bovis Homes to Grove Care.

Grove Care of Winterbourne plans to build and operate a 50-bed care home and 50 apartments for elderly people adjacent to the new doctor’s surgery.

Matt Hiles, Director of CJH Land said: “This site will form the neighbourhood centre known as Charlton Square and will now provide much-needed facilities for Charlton Hayes, which is being developed for about 2,200 homes. It is important that the right provision is made for elderly people.”

Grove Care operate a number of nursing homes and provide specialist end of life and dementia care.

with Graham Simmonds of goto iTAugust: Driverless carsThe Government have recently stated it has approved plans to test driverless cars on the roads. This will probably happen within 12-18 months. This technology during the summer holidays when motorways frequently get jammed up becomes very relevant.

What will happen is some cars will be on our roads that will drive themselves. Cities across the UK have been invited to bid to become hosts for the trials. Of course there will always be a human driver present to take control at any point. The cars will use a mixture of technology to gather an image of the world around them. They will then use this to decide the best route.

In the future, they will also have the ability to talk to other similarly equipped cars to identify traffic jams and plan the best way forward. If all or the majority of cars adopt this technology, they will even work together to decide the best routes and speed to get all the traffic to their destinations as efficiently as possible. In the meantime you can sit back and enjoy a relaxing journey.

At the moment we already have plenty of driver aids such as cruise control, and you can use technology such as satellite navigation and online services like Google Maps to plan your journey and see where there are traffic queues. It looks like science fiction is becoming science fact!

Of course if you would like to have a chat about this, please contact us on 0117 969 8767 or visit us in our shop on the corner of Filton Ave and the A4174.Advert, Page 2

Get your bike checkedFree bike checks are being offered at a travel roadshow coming to Abbey Wood retail park this month.

Cyclists can have their bikes checked over by ‘Dr Bike’ to make sure they are roadworthy, and there will also be an opportunity to find out about bike repairs.

Information is also available about cycle routes in the local area, such as the Concorde Way path, which takes riders all the way to Cribbs Causeway.

Car users are also being encouraged to ditch their vehicle for the day, and hop on a bus for free with an AvonRider voucher. The token - which can be picked up at the roadshow - is valid to use with any bus operator, on any journey across the region, as long as the journey starts in South Gloucestershire.

The travel roadshow will be visiting Abbey Wood retail park on August 23, from 11am-3pm.

Dreary weather did not stop Beaufort Grange celebrating its one year anniversary last month.

The care home, in Cheswick Village, celebrated the event with a pet show and family fun day, which raised £543 towards the residents fund.

A spokesperson for Beaufort Grange said: “We were very unlucky with the weather but we were determined not to let the rain get the better of us.

“Lots of people battled the bad weather to join us, including Pets at Home, who provided the prizes for our pet show.”

There were a host of activities including games, donkey rides, balloon creations and care home residents’ art displays.

At the end of the day, general manager Alexa and one of the Beaufort Grange residents planted a cherry tree to mark the occasion.

Safe Reliable Homecare

by Rebecca DayAfter 10 years of searching, a rugby club near Cheswick has potentially found itself a new home.

The Lockleaze Recreation Ground charity - owners of Dings Crusaders RFC - has signed an option to relocate to the former market garden on Frenchay Park Road, opposite the old hospital site.

To fund the relocation, the charity has reached an agreement with Redrow Homes to re-develop the existing ground in Landseer Avenue.

But planning permission still needs to be secured.

They say that the existing facilities - which have been home to the Dings Crusaders for over 60 years - are now deemed “unsuitable and financially beyond repair”.

Ray Bowden, director of Lockleaze Recreation Ground and president of Dings Crusaders RFC, said: “It has been a long time coming but now we have a clear route forward and our energies have to be channelled into making this fantastic opportunity a reality.

“The new site, to be known

as Shaftesbury Park, has been chosen for its close proximity to the Lockleaze site and is sufficiently large enough to accommodate our playing, training and community requirements for years to come.”

The club says that the multi-million pound investment will allow them to expand its playing base to include ladies and youth

rugby; offer opportunities such as referee coaching; and enhance their engagement with the community.

He added: “Over the last 10 years we have had many ups and downs and learnt a lot of lessons about trying to relocate our facilities. This time we are learning from those lessons and have already started talking to the local communities.

“We have a broad base of members living across north Bristol, South Gloucestershire and beyond, and we are aware that there will be members who might have to travel slightly further. But we will be exploring how we can help them with transport and, importantly, make it sustainable. Engaging and consulting with local communities will be key in the process moving forward.”

Plans for the new site are in the process of being drawn-up, and meetings are being carried out with the local community.

Once the plans have been finalised, a full consultation will begin.

Spanish links in splendid gardensFilton Garden Club

The Royal Horticultural Society’s renowned gardens at Rosemoor in Devon became a huge attraction to Filton Garden Club members who travelled down there on Wednesday, July 9th.

Journeying down to Great Torrington – via Exeter – through lush Devon countryside was a joy in itself. Yet none could surpass the extent of the colourful gardens at Rosemoor that had earned it International acclaim.

It was, in effect, a combination of several gardens, each with unique characters of their own, spread over 8 acres. Great care had been taken to link them with nature’s own provision of woodlands and rural scenery that was already there.

The welcome we received from their friendly staff in their delightful restaurant complemented their menu, most of which was derived from their own garden complex.

The gardens themselves were beautifully assembled as you will gather from the photos. Each was linked with wide causeways providing easy access to those with invalid chairs.

The gardens contain an exotic array of roses and many other varieties of flowers. Particularly interesting was the “Queen Mother’s Rose Garden.” I feel certain this would have given her delight whenever she visited there.

Donated to the Royal Horticultural Society in 1988 by Lady Anne Berry – daughter of Sir Hugh Walpole – it combined with 32 acres of arable land to make it as it is today.

She derived her gardening interests whilst recovering from an illness in Spain. Many of the garden’s contents originated from there.

I hardly met any fellow travellers out along the way but for two ladies admiring the flowers. Obtaining their permission to take their photographs I discovered they were “twins” and had

travelled – unknown to myself – along with others in our coach.

Licensed for outdoor weddings at various locations in the gardens it seemed ideal for “tying the knot” ... or merely thinking about it

Thanks to Brian and Pat Smith for arranging such a memorable visit.

You think school is out for summer? Think again. Pops of primary colour are the new answer to last season’s pastel bloom. For those who are partial to a splash of colour in their lives, prefer to be dressed head-to-toe in vibrant colour from day to night, or just simply enjoy colour matching their accessories to their outfit for a weekend out on the town, there is something for everybody.

The trends so far in 2014 have all firmly revolved around returning to back to basics, and the stores at The Mall, Cribbs Causeway have hit the crayon box with fire-engine red, cobalt blue and canary yellow dominating most collections in keeping with this trend.

News

On Saturday 21 June St Vallier AFC held their Annual Presentation Evening at the Ratepayer’s Arms. The event was particularly notable this year as the club are celebrating their 40th anniversary. The trophies were presented by former Bristol Rovers and Gloucestershire County Cricket player, Harold Jarman, and many of the squads wore their 40th Anniversary commemorative T-shirts.

It has been a season of varying success for the different age groups, but nevertheless all the players were rewarded with trophies to acknowledge their efforts over the last few months. Within each squad, individual awards were presented in the categories of Manager’s Player, Players’ Player, Clubman and Most Improved Player. The winners were as follows:

Under 7s – Scott Hamilton, Harry Leivers, Ryan Holbrook

Under 8s – Regan Walker, Scott Hamilton, Tom Thorne, Leyton Farr, Daniel Holbrook, Noah Burrand

Under 9s – Sam Webb, Cameron McKelvie-Warsop, Harrison Bailey, Tom Whelan, Lewis Ferris, Henry Marsh

Under 10s – Josh Beveridge, Ewan Bullough, Oliver Burrand, Ben Browne-Cole, Finlay Haynes, Ellis Prewett

Under 12s - Max Wilding, Jai MacLeod, Joe Harris

Under 13s – Rendijs Kalnins, Harry Garret, Mitchel Cantle

Under 16s - long service trophies to Jack McDaid & Liam Dorman

Scott Hamilton deserves a special mention as he was Manager’s Player at Under 7 level, but because he often plays for the Under 8s as well,

he was chosen as one of the Players’ Players of the season. He has now been selected to join Bristol City Under 8s and so will no longer be able to play for the club. He joins Yiannis Lomvardos who has been scouted by Bristol Rovers and will play for their Under 9s next season, and former St Vallier players Ollie Jenkins and George Brown who have both earned new contracts at Under 10 level for Rovers and City respectively. St Vallier wish them all well.

The evening concluded with two special awards which remember two founders of the club who sadly both passed away last year. The ‘John Councell

Award’ for Team of the Year was presented to Glenn Haynes, manager of the Under 10 Squad. Since taking over the team, Glenn has created a unique team spirit and has developed a great support network with the parents and players. The ‘Frank Baker Award’ for outstanding contribution to St Vallier was awarded to Tim Parsons, sponsor of the current Under 13 Squad and the man responsible for organising fundraising events and activities to finance the boys’ recent tour to Belgium.

St Vallier recognise and appreciate the hard work all coaches and committee members put in to grow the game and the

club. Thanks to all our sponsors and particularly H&P Aerials for their continued support of the Youth Development squads.

Going forward, St Vallier has been working close with Filton Town Council, who value the club’s local connection, and has committed to using their facilities, hence moving the Presentation Evening back to the Ratepayer’s Arms from the Memorial Ground, and all six teams next season will be playing at Elm Park.

555 Bus route

Route from June 29 2014

The Filton Flyer bus service route has been changed in a bid to increase passenger numbers.

The service, which runs in Filton Monday to Friday, has been losing money since its launch before Christmas as passenger numbers have been building up.

Since the beginning of last month, the service has cut out the outlying stops – Southmead Hospital and Parkway Station – in a bid to make it more attractive.

The service is now running four times a day on a one-hour route starting at Filton College.

Users had complained that the original route did not allow them to complete shopping or appointments since the route was too long, meaning some passengers had to complete almost a whole circuit to get home.

The new route will run at 10am, 11am, noon and 1pm from the college, along the following route: Filton College, Conygre Grove, Conygre Road, Church View shops, Elm Park, Northville Rd, Filton Ave South, George Pub, Filton Abbeywood Station, Asda, Sainsbury’s then returning on a similar route to the college.

Filton Town Council was told that not enough passengers were using the service for the hospital and Parkway.

Cllr Brian Freeguard said in May that although passenger numbers

were rising month on month, greater volume was needed.

The service was given a grant which makes it sustainable in the medium term but more passengers will be needed long term.

For any comments ont he service, please email Joy on [email protected]
