Marcy Hawkins New Principal, New School To kick off the start of the 2013-2014 school year, Bolton has undergone an administration change. With Mr. Haddow now gone, who else to take charge other than Mr. Stevens, former vice-principal? With a new principal, returning students can expect some changes. When Mr. Haddow told Mr. Stevens he had left, Mr. Stevens described his first reaction as “God, I hope they name me principal.” It was quickly followed by “Oh no, how hard is this job going to be compared to what I’ve been doing?” When he was finally named principal, a friend confronted Stevens saying it was the first time he could ever think of a teacher saying that he was going to be principal almost fifteen years prior to becoming principal. Mr. Stevens is now entering his twentith year as a wildcat, the past ten as a key figure in the schools admin-istration. The person that gave him the job believes that he was the perfect person to fill the position. Mr. Stevens goes on to state that he believes that he has the most “Wildcat blood” in his veins. For the past twenty years
he’s been saying you never work a day in your life if you do what you love, and being a part of Bolton has given him his dream job as principal. Due to the merger, Mr. Stevens expects an interesting year. There will be some new challenges to face, and some new experiences to be shared. Now as principal, he has to work with big decisions that could impact the school, and he has to work toward making every decision a posi-tive one for the school. It is a tough job, but he has full confidence that he can make things work, he can make the right decisions, and he can make this the best job he has ever had. For all the incoming freshman, Mr. Stevens’ advice for you is “be involved in the school. The more in-volved in the school you are, the better your high school career will be,” he says “don’t come to school at seven am just to leave at two pm. If you do then high school will bore you.” Mr. Stevens’ final warning to anyone who doesn’t know him yet is “do not get on my radar and C-O-K-E is the real thing.” Best wishes to Mr. Stevens, Coca Cola and Bolton’s biggest fan, nothing but good luck.

With summer already over, we must once again return to school. For some of us it is our last year at Bolton, however for others it is the start to a new adventure and era of life.
I remember the first day of my freshman year, I walked through the same doors as many of you have done today; I was absolutely lost and so nervous, I swore someone could hear my heartbeat down the hall.
Being nervous is normal the first few days, no mat-ter what the grade. You may not know the school, the teachers, the people in your classes, the new face in the principal’s chair, or, if you are a senior, the realization that college applications are due in just a few months.
Although it is nowhere near as drastic, the butterflies still took me by surprise this year, as I walked into E145 for 5th period. Excitement and anxiety flooded me as I walked into the familiar room.
I looked around the room thinking, “this is my baby
and these are the people who are going to help bring it to life.” This was the new PawPrint staff.
Then I realized the nerves that I was feeling were a good thing. The butterflies I had just felt were a reminder that I was pushing myself out of my comfort zone, that I had done something right to get here, that this would be a moment I would remember. I was shy before journalism transformed me last semester, and it was my job to help transform the new staff with the help of our advisor Kelly Robinson, managing editor Halley Brown, and produc-tion editor Rachel Marlin.
Then I spoke and all the nervous flashed away, I was back home. I guess finding your home at school is the best way to push the nerves aside and enjoy the ex-perience. After all, what you do outside of class can help determine your whole experience.
Best of luck this year, and hope all you can find your home. Alyssa Isenhour

3 In 2010 Memphis City Schools officially gave up their charter, which in turn meant that Shelby County would be solely responsible for both school systems. This created the prospect of the largest public school merger in history. Here we are two years later at the beginning of the Shelby County Unified School District. What does this mean for us as students and community members? If we take a look at the challenges our community faces we can better under-stand why there are so many strong and varied opinions about the merger. There were many reasons behind the surrender of the MCS school charter, some financial and some due to the declining performance within some of the schools in their system. These factors led to the surrender of the MCS charter. Many people disagree with the consolidation and feel that it is detrimental to both school systems. We as a community have already seen the effects of the new budget for the unified system through the elimina-
tion of teaching, staffing and counseling positions, as well as in cuts in funding for certain programs. So the question is, how different will this school year at Bolton be compared to the past? For starters, we are begin-ning the year with a new principal and five new teachers. When asked Mrs. Hayes, teacher at Bolton, how the merger could effect students and staff, she said, “Basically for the students I don’t think it will be that differ-ent, as far as the faculty and administrators, we’re all having to get used to combining two systems into one.” Each system had different policies and procedures for everything rang-ing from grading, paying the staff, to cutting the grass. There are many uncertainties still left for students, staff, and teachers throughout the system.

4 The first scrimmage of the year versus Hillcrest showcased our mainly veteran offensive line. Our young, but strong, defensive line was on show also. Yet, in order to be of the highest caliber, they con-tinue to work on acquiring new skills, a big task after graduating every starting skill position player. As far as the depth across the board at all positions, we are, “Okay, but very inexperienced,” according to Coach Miller. We can expect to see a spread-type offense from our team this
year, the same as our previous year. Leading this offense is Austin Clark, our senior starting quarterback. Austin Looker, our senior kicker is new to our team, yet, is very promising. Bolton has a brand new backfield. A change from last year is All-district, Sam Toliver, was moved from corner to play safety for his senior year. A person to keep your eye on is Tavon Banks, our senior defensive end, who ended last year’s season with 15 sacks and 32 solo tackles.
First Glance at This Year’s Team Brennan Brown and Madison Conklin
Aries: “I Love It” by Icona PopMarch 21 - April 19
Aries are impulsive, and they aren’t afraid to tell it as it is. They’ll say the first thing
that comes to mind before they have time think it through.
I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone. I crashed my car into the
bridge. I watched, I let it burn. I threw your stuff into a bag and pushed it down
the stairs. I crashed my car into the bridge. I don't care, I love it.
Taurus: “Glamorous” by FergieApril 20 - May 20
Taurus’ are materialists. They’re laid back, but they love being pampered, and
dream of luxurious lives. We flying the first class up in the sky, poppin’
champagne. Livin’ the life in the fast lane, and I won’t change by the glamorous.
Gemini: “Hot N’ Cold” by Katy PerryMay 21 - June 20
A Gemini is hopelessly indecisive. They are called the twins of the Zodiac, and are known to show
two different opinions when put in a difficult situation. They can never make up their mind. You’re hot, then you’re cold. You’re yes, then
you’re no. You’re in, then you in then you’re out. You’re up, then you’re down. You’re wrong when
it’s right - it’s black, then it’s white.
Cancer: “Lego House” by Ed SheeranJune 21 - July 22
Represented by a crab, who has a shell, a cancer has “walls” built up around them. They’re highly sensi-tive, and, as a result, are also very
guarded people. I’m gonna pick up the pieces, and build a Lego house, If things go wrong we can knock it down..
LEO: “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon July 23 - August 22
Leos are the most stubborn and dramatic of the signs. They put their pride on a pedestal and do not let any-
one take them down. You’re so vain, I’ll bet you think this song is about you.
Don’t you? Don’t You?
VIRGO: “She’s Killing Me” by A Rocket To The Moon
August 23 - September 22Virgos are very practical and love to analyze everything; because of this, they can some-times come across as overcritical and judg-mental, though they is not their intention.
I got on that shirt she hates, I just know that face she’ll make. Even though it hurts, she’s
my favorite pain.

Libra “Happy” by Natasha Bedingfield
September 23 - October 22Libras like finding the perfect balance in
life. Having the right amount of everything makes them feel complete. Too much of a good thing isn’t what Libras look for. They
want everything balanced. Got my dreams, got my life, got my love. Got my friends got the sunshine above, Why am I making this hard on myself when there’s so many beautiful reasons I have to be happy? People lie, people hide, people cry, people
fight and they don’t know why.
Sagittarius“Jamie All Over” by Mayday Parade
November 22 - December 21Sagittarius’ are adventure-junkies. They love getting in the car, picking a random
place, and getting away. They’re also dreamers, and blindy-optimistic. They like to think that everything is always alright.I had a dream last night we drove out to see Las Vegas. We lost ourselves in the
bright lights; I wish you could have seen us. Begging for change to get home, or at
least San Francisco.
Scorpio“She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5
October 23 - November 21Scorpios give off a strong vibe, and play a courageous role, but they are softies at heart. They have insecurities that they hide behind their fearless composure
because they do not like feeling inferior. I don't mind spending every day, out on your corner in the pouring rain. Look for the girl with the broken smile. Ask
her if she wants to stay awhile. And she will be loved.
Capricorn“Lose Yourself ” by EminemDecember 22 - January 19
Capricorns are ambitious. They are hard workers, and always go for the gold. You’ll never find them
settling for less than they deserve. You better lose yourself in the music. The moment you own it, you better never let it go. You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow. This
opportunity comes once in a lifetime.
Aquarius “Fireflies” by Owl City
January 20 - February 18Aquarius’ are very intellectual and of-ten times quirky. Anything out of the norm is pleasing to them - they love a
good challenge.I'd like to make myself believe that
planet Earth turns slowly. It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when
I'm asleep, 'cause everything is never as it seems.
Pisces“Love Story” by Taylor Swift
February 19 - March 20A Pisces is the epitome of ‘hopeless ro-mantics.’ They’re very fairytale oriented,
and love anything to do with happy endings.
Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone. I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do it run. You be the prince, and I’ll be the prin-
cess. It’s a love story, baby, just say yes.
