DESCRIPTION:  For this assignment, you will play the role of a writer/director that is pitching a crime film to a major Hollywood movie production company.  Before pitching the film, the movie executives want a script proposal to review beforehand.  Your task is to write a script proposal that contains the following items:

 (1) A brief summary of the film (what is it about, what type of film (action, drama, mystery, film noir), setting, budget, and how long will it be etc.)

(2) The basic plot structure of the film – i.e. will the film follow the plot of a film noir with scenes out of sequence or follow a traditional Hollywood film with a linear plot that has a beginning, middle, and end?

(3) Who will be the main characters – protagonist, antagonist, supporting characters?

(4) What plot devices will be used to advance the story – violence, action, drama, stereotypes of criminals, criminal justice personnel and gender and racial groups etc.?

(5) A sample dialogue between the characters

(6) Description of a few scenes

 ***Note that it is not required to create an entire movie script with every scene and all the dialogue for this assignment***

APPLICATION AND INTEGRATION:  The purpose of this assignment is to give the student a creative and engaging way to apply and integrate key themes, concepts, and theoretical frameworks discussed in the class.  Therefore, the script proposal MUST demonstrate this through either:

(1) Writing a script proposal that conforms or adheres to the myths, stereotypes, distortions, and exaggerations of crime, criminals, criminal justice personnel, criminal justice processes, and the branches of the criminal justice system found commonly in Hollywood films

and/or

(2) Writing a script proposal in line with the alternative film tradition's worldview and its portrayal of crime, criminals, justice, and the criminal justice system and its personnel Make sure to review your notes and the readings for how the various themes and concepts can be integrated into your proposal, such as the “mean world view,” “private justice,” and “ideal man is the ideal cop” themes.
