January—March 2013 Volume 1I1, Issue VI Filibuster The Official Newsletter of the Michigan JCI Senate Greetings to all, This is the best time of year. We get cool weather then some cold then some snow and back to the cool again. Next thing you know the Sun beats down at 70 degrees. Where else but in Michigan!! Sometimes our lives in the Sen- ate are the same as the changing weather. We get involved with the Senate and there are so many ways to do that like being a part of the board, being a chairman, Foundation, participating in Region and state events. There are many that do a lot to support the Senate. They may not be seen all the time but they have the Senate in their hearts. Let's always remember how the Senate has touched and involved eve- ryone in their lives. We are working hard and have heard from the State of Michigan Gaming Commission about our Hold ‘Em license and events we want to run. It should be soon. Edonna Russell has been doing a great job on this. Many of you were at the Post Holiday party. If you weren't you missed a good time. The food was great and the Fun we had with the auction was too good. We definitely have some characters in the group. Our budget is a little tight, but we have some ways we are trying to come up to proceed for the rest of the year. Get in contact with or Call me or your VP's with whatever ideas and input you have. I do hope your Holidays were Happy, Fun, Special and Blessed. I want to Thank the board and all of you for your support during the year and to make 2013 better than ever. See you at February convention in Grand Rapids. From the members... The Finest Model in America By John Gwynne Prosser II JCI Senator #48006 For 40 years the Michigan Model for No-Fault Automobile Insurance, as designed by the Michigan Legislature, has satisfied the needs of our Citizens who are catastrophically injured in automobile accidents. For the past 15 months The Coalition Protecting Auto No-Fault (CPAN) www.DoTheMathmi.org has advocated to preserve, protect and strengthen this system of care which is funded by drivers for drivers. Presently there is 14 Billion Dollars of driver cash invested in the Michigan Catastrophic Claim Association, the insurance companies refuse to provide neither transparency nor full disclosure. The CPAN and the Brain Injury Association of Michigan (BIA) www.biami.org have filed suit demanding Free-dom of Information retrieval under the FOIA statute and total transparency under common law rights belonging to Citizens who purchase automobile insurance as mandated by the Legislature. As a Business owner who for 20 years has been serving those catastrophically injured automobile accident victims who most often suffer brain injuries and or spinal cord injuries, with in home Nursing Care on a 24 hour basis, I can tell you how important these resources are for these families. When this injury happens this resource becomes the most important topic in your life. The unfortunate reality is that these accidents happen 15-20 per week in Michigan. For the past 15 months the insurance companies have put forth proposals which are nothing more than a greedy grabs and which propose to dismantle this Model solely for more insurance company profits. They al-ready net 22% on 12 Billion in premiums. We believe that people are more important than more profits. I am encouraging everyone to take 10 minutes and learn about your rights and benefits that are threatened by the insurance companies who are putting everyone in harm’s way. Please join our Coalition and contact your Representative and Senator and simply tell them to preserve and protect Auto No-Fault as it has worked for 40 years. The insurance institute itself has described the Michigan Model as “the finest Model in America”. We at CPAN are fighting to protect and grow health care jobs here in Michigan , prevent a loss of re-sources forcing families through bankruptcy due to medical bills onto limited care under Medicaid. We want to prevent a cost shift onto Medicaid by insurance companies which will cost taxpayers billions more in Medicaid costs. We want to encourage everyone to write a short note or email a message to your elected representatives telling them that this issue matters to you, it will make a huge difference, and I thank you! The Michigan Jaycees reach out...

Good evening Senators I hope that this email finds everyone safe and healthy with their families enjoying this holiday season. We have had a request from the Michigan Jaycees to help them assembly a database of Senators who can provide training assistance to our local chap-ters. Nina Perko, 2013 Training Director (MIJCs), put together a very simple / easy survey that will fill this needed database for their use. Specifically her request was: "We really want to utilize the Senate for NON-Jaycees training. We want to utilize the talents and experience of how the Jaycees have impacted your lives and careers and how you applied that to 'real life.' You guys have 'been there done that' and are out in the 'field' maybe putting to use what you learned. I would like to compile a spreadsheet of Senators, current careers, and non-Jaycee topics they might be interested in training on." NOTE: For older Senators who may have participated in the Speakers Bureau, your information needs to be updated as that information is long gone. You do NOT need a gmail account to access this survey. If you can find some time this weekend to begin filling out your information that will be a great start. Future emails will have reminders as well. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dEZ6d0YxTFczQkxuX204dU9uNzhWNnc6MQ Thank you in advance for your participation!

First Timers Hi Everyone, I am so excited to be working on First Timers this year. Something new I have been doing this year is going out to the chapters and personal inviting the first timers to come out to convention and be a part of the pro-ject. I have been out to 13 chapters in 2012. I am hoping to get out to District 8 before February Convention. This is where I could use some help since the Districts don’t have District meet-ings anymore it’s hard to get out to each chapter or district dur-ing the week. If any of the senators in the area would like to help me with this and go visit the chapter’s and promote First Timers I would love the help. Please feel free to contact me and I will give you more information. Thanks Kim Hubbell #68729

Orientations

Hello again - and welcome New Senators! We will not be holding a New Senator Orientation in February at the Michigan Jaycees convention, but we will be in May (most likely in Boyne). But I don't want people to feel "out of the loop." We have assembled an orientation packet which will hopefully answer most of your questions (not all). You can download the pdf version off the website by going to: http://michiganjcisenate.org/documents and selecting the link: New Senator Orientation Packet (pdf). Or if you would prefer, please contact me and I would be so happy to send one to you (either via email OR snail mail). Yours in Jaycee Spirit, Sue Foltin #63744 New Senator Orientation Chair [email protected] cell (734) 476-1784

News from the Treasurer

We just submitted the dues kit for September 1, 2012 and only dropped 4 (although we thought it was going to be 6) and in December we dropped 3; BUT we added 8 in September and 2 in December from members that we found and they gave us their $20.00 to rejoin this fine organization. That’s all it takes.. The four members in September that were dropped for non-payment of dues are Merrill Bailey #44702; Brenda Coulson #64826; Brenda Haight #64008 and Budd Lynch #1139. The three members that were dropped in December for non-payment of dues are Jim Anderson #58548; Jeffrey Smith #64330 and C. Wil-liam Wentworth #45488. SO, if you know and/or see these individuals please try to get their annual dues of $20.00 and get to me and I can add them again to the roster with the March dues kit…. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome back Darlene Dresch #69161; Tammey Inman #65923; Sam Gardner #48417; Lisa Dunville #70381 and Teri Marshall #59563. Also, once again (as you can see by my pictures that I inserted) I am once again asking everyone to send me an e-mail or note with your home chapter. Home Chapters were not always added to the roster in the past and I would like to add this to the roster and the Data Base in Quickbooks. If you are going to send me an e-mail or note anyway, why not add all your current contact information – Name___________________________________ Senate # _________ Life # _______ Address________________________________________________________________ City_______________________ State ______ Zip _______ Home Phone _______________________ Cell Phone __________________________ E-mail address ______________________________________________ Home Jaycee Chapter ________________________________ Do you want to receive e-news Yes _____ No _____ Do you want filibuster delivered by e-mail ______ or snail mail ______
