mous mountain, rising, more or lessabruptly, from a netu rally lutl stirOc e,and the sea Iviittf over a narrow, de-

pressed region in the northwesternPanfir reaches its greatest depth. Hutthis is exceptional; in its gerer il rliar-aete- r

the orean hotloin ctifwiltl of vimMat or undulating plains. An extraor-dinary ircumstanre that ha.s bctllnotiretl with interest, and that alwayscreates surprise when first learned, isthe entire ,ibscn e of foreign matter inthe deeper part of the ocean's tloor.

Of all the vessels lest in midocean ;of all the human beings that have beendrowned ; of all the marine animalsthat have perished : of all the lay, sand and gravel let fall by dissolving

icebergs , of all the various substancesdrifted from every shore by shifting

i urrents, not a trace remains ; but in

'.heir plate water from 1,00010.2,500fathoms in depth covers the uniformdeposit of thick, bluish, tenaciousslime. ailed iilobiuerina Ooze. A bit

of this under a powerful lens is a reve-lation of beauty not readily forgotten. The 00e is composed almost entirely

of the daintiest, most delicately beauti-ful shells imaginable.

At depths greater than 2,500 fathomsthe bottom of the sea consists mainlyof produrts arising from exposure, foralmost incalculable periods, to thechemical a tion of sea water, of pumiceand othtr volcanic matters. Thisfinally results in the formation of thered clay deposits that are Consideredcharac teristic of the profoundest depthsof the ocean. Carbonate of lime, which in the form of the shells of

makes up so large a part ofthe globigerina ooze, is hire almostentirely absent.

Sea water is very nearly a universalsolvent, and before any shell, large orsmall, readies the bottom of thesetremtnduous abysms it is chemicallyeaten up, literally dissolved -- a resultwhich the enormous pressure of thewater must materially hasten. At 1000fathoms the weight of the water pressing 0:1 all sides of an object immersedto that depth is very nearly one ton tothe square inch or more than one--hundred times that sustained at thesea level, and at the greatest depthsthe pressure is so increased that itwould seem nothing could withstand it

in fact, heavy metal cylinders letdown with the sounding apparatus aresometimes, on hein drawn Up again tothe surfare, f.und bent and collapsed ;strong' y made glas vessels which thernetal enclosed are shattered into frag-ments.

In the prof .undent abysms of thesea are strange forms of life, that never, save when brought up by the trawl, seethe upper light. The work carried onby means of the United Slates PishCommission vessel, the Albatross, hasestablished the fact that forms of sealife inhabiting upper waters may des-en-

to about 1,200 feet from the sur-face, but that below this, to a depth of300 or 360 fathoms, a barren .one in-tervenes where marine life seems ab-sent. Hut still deeper, strange to say,has been diseovered an abundant andvaried fauni, new to science, living un-der conditions of tremendous pressure, and paucity of thr; ele-ment ofoxygen, that induced an eminent zoologist to say quite recently" What we know of the greatest oceandepths forbid n to expei t to find the 11inhabited by living organi-uns.- Here, indeed, survive forms of life the like ofwhich no inhabitant of the upper world, not even the sun himselt, has lookeduoon bffme the dredges of the Chal-lenger, tne Albatross, the Hake, and

imilarly equipped vessels dragged upmarine reatun s from congenial coldand dark.

It might reasonably be supposed th tthese denizens of great sea depthswould be built mora firmly and stronglythan surface animals to resist the pressure of the element in which they live, but it is just the oiitrary. The mostuniversal characteristic of these ir. ;itures is the looseness and flabbiness oftexture they exhibit. Indeed, theyseem to need the excessive pressure ofthe water about tnem to keep theirparts together, lor when llity arebrought to the surface they are readyto fall to pieces. It is a problem, sostrangely arc some of them formed, how they can move from place to plan ;were lh y not entirely below the dis-

turbing dement of wave action theywould, to all appearanc-.-- , be helpless.

Inhabiting these abysmal spaces, ahcompletely ut off from communicationwith the upper waters an we are fromthe inhabitants ol'other planets, we inonly vaguely spe ulate on their habitsand MM their manners of life fromtheir somewhat remote analogies to ihesurface spe ies nearest akin to them.Plant life is entirely absent from theitplate of Ihods, and although theydoubtless prey upon each other, s me,
