Floodlit toboggan runs

Three natural toboggan runs dotted with cosy cabins make for a change here in the Tux valley, bringing a fun and social element to your holi-day. The most beautiful – all 3 lanes are floodlit in the evening; Bichlalm in Hin-tertux at 1,695 m, this 3 km toboggan run leads into the valley. The toboggan run at Grieralm in Juns at 1,787 m is around 5 km long and the Höllensteinhütte in Tux-Lanersbach at 1,740 m with a 4 km run of tobogganing pleasure. A traditionally run cosy mountain hut for hikers and tobogganers alike. Access is also possible with our spe-cial toboggan taxi service.

Escape from the hustle and bustle, find your inner peace with moments of reflection immersed in nature – here in the holiday homeland of Tux-Finkenberg. A walk through the virgin, deep snowy winter landscape of the Tux valley is so much more than just trud-ging through the snow – it is winter wellness at its very best. Re-charge your batteries on any of the winter hiking trails, all 68 km of them cle-ared and marked around Tux and Finkenberg. Enjoy the tranquillity of nature with only the sound of crunching snow underfoot - easing body, mind and soul, step by step.

S pring and summer are very busy times for em-ployees of the Zillerta-

ler Gletscherbahn glacier cable car. In addition to inspection work on the facilities, there are always technical innovations and quality improvements to be made. Martin Steinlechner, operations manager at the Hin-tertux glacier, offers an insight of the work.

NEW GONDOLAS. Glet-scherbus 2 has ferried about 30 millions of guests to Tuxer Fer-nerhaus over the past 23 years. After almost 75,000 operating hours, the old cabins have now been replaced by the latest ge-neration of gondolas. “When ca-bins are replaced, the cable car is normally shut down for the work to be carried out,“ explains Martin Steinlechner. Gletscher-bus 2, however, is one of the most important installation on the Hintertux Glacier. For this reason, the cabins could only be replaced during ongoing opera-tions. Such an undertaking is unprecedented in Austria. „We worked very closely with the

New gondolas toTuxer Fernerhaus

of 30 tons per cable. Then the six strands of the cable were untwi-sted over a length of 58 metres, cut to different lengths and then twisted back together again,“ says Martin. After stringent checks and tests, the system was then put back into operation. ❚

Operations manager, Martin Steinlechner, reports on replacing gondolas on the

monstrates: length: 7,600 me-tres, diameter 48 mm, weight: 66 tons. The real challenge was to deliver this cable to its rightful destination, i.e. to the pulleys of the world’s highest bicable gondola lift. The special transporter required to bring the cable to the valley terminal of the glacier lifts Gletscher-bahn was too heavy for the thir-teen-kilometre journey to the Tuxer Fernerhaus, at an altitude of 2,660 meters. „So we divided the cable into two trucks, both connected by a drawbar shaft. A third truck provided support in difficult passages,“ reports Martin Steinlechner. The entire convoy weighed 138 tons. The new cable was connected to the old one, in order to hoist it over cableway support pulleys. „This was a very delicate process and took about one and a half days. The cable must not twist or touch the ground, „explains Martin. Then the splicers went to work. This team of specialists connected the two rope ends in a very complex and manual procedure. „The cable is pulled together with a tensioning force

Austrian ropeway authority and tested each of the 34 new cabins for hours in trial operations,“ explains Martin. What happe-ned to the old cabins? They were sold. Twelve cabins are now in use in Andorra on a similar sys-tem. The remaining cabins were purchased by cable car enthusi-asts and are now used, amongst other things, as a washroom on a camping site or as a gondola bar at a lido. Not all work on cable car sys-tems is as obvious as changing the gondolas on Gletscherbus 2. However, they serve for the sa-fety and comfort of passengers. With this in mind, the ball-bea-rings of three deflection pulleys were replaced one level higher at the mountain terminal of Gletscherbus 3, at a height of 3,250 metres. Not an easy task: a deflection pulley has a diame-ter of around four metres and weighs about five tons.

NEW CABLE. Cable replace-ment was also on the agenda for Gletscherbus 3. A difficult undertaking, as a glance at the technical data of the cable de-

Martin Steinlechner has been operations manager at the Zillerta-ler Gletscherbahn glacier lifts since 2013 and is an avid cable car fan. „After Mama, the second word I ever said was gondola,“ laughs the 28 year old. He graduated from HTL technical school for mechanical en-gineering and was one of the youn-gest ropeway operations manager in Austria.

W iltener Boys Choir is one of the oldest and most

traditional boys’ choirs in the Alps. Their history dates back to the 13th Century, when Em-peror Maximilian I. founded the predecessors of the Vien-na Boys Choir with choirboys from Wilten.

THE SINGERS. Johannes Stecher has been conductor of the Wiltener Boys Choir since 1991. Today, the choir boasts of some 200 singers, who are trained in several groups - from junior choirs and concert choirs to male voices - partly in cooperation with the Tiro-lean Landeskonservatorium (State Music Conservatory). The choir members attend va-rious schools in Innsbruck and the surrounding area and, de-pending on their age, come to Wilten once to three times a week for rehearsals or singing lessons. The youngest choir members are around four to five years old.

10th Wiltener BoysChoir ConcertThe traditional boys‘ choir will return to Tux-Lanersbach on 2nd January 2020.

THEIR REPERTOIRE is con-stantly alternated, as the choir members - as is the case with children‘s choirs - change very quickly and switch from the voice types of soprano or con-tralto, to tenor or bass. The choir perform a lot of ancient sacred music, ranging from the

Renaissance to the Baroque pe-riod, to classical and romantic. As a Tyrolean choir, they also feel naturally obliged to bow to the tradition of authentic folk songs. So yodelling and folk songs from the Alpine region as well as spiritual folk songs - especially at Advent and Christ-

mas time - are often found in their choral programmes. Ope-ra and choral symphonic works also occupy a prominent positi-on in their repertoire. The Wil-tener choirboys have also perfor-med several times at the Tiroler and Vorarlberger Landestheater, in various Italian opera houses, at the Salzburg, Bregenz and Ti-rolean Festivals.

TOURS. The choir performs concerts mainly in the German-speaking area. Extensive con-cert tours are also organised all over the world. Some of these tours have taken the young sin-gers several times to China, Ja-pan, Israel, Romania, Denmark, France, Italy, Belgium, Swit-zerland and the Netherlands. The Christmas and New Year‘s concerts in Tux-Finkenberg are also part of their annual fixtures. The 10th anniversary concert will take place on 2nd January 2020 in the Tux-Center in Tux-Lanersbach. ❚ www.saengerknaben.com

and curling lanes in Tux-Laners-bach. As the onset of winter begins, the first big challenge is to build up a good layer of ice. In or-der to obtain a robust ice surface, the snow is first compressed and then sprayed with water at regu-lar intervals. „This takes about a week and is a science of its own,“ says Franz. They are also responsi-ble for renting out the ice skates and serving drinks. In the eve-ning, the ice rink is cleaned and sprayed with water again, so it can be used again the next day. These Tourist Board “field staff” also help in the background at va-rious events and ski shows.

PREPARATIONS. If everything goes to plan? Then prepara-tions commence for the warm season. Around 1,500 benches, plus hundreds of signposts, in-formation boards, fences and gates, which are set up along the hiking trails in the Tux Valley in summer, have to be maintained, repaired and repainted. Are there ever any quieter times? Yes, every so often. And that is when the two skilled car-penters „look for“ their work and get creative. Inspired by nature, these beautiful wooden benches or fountains are crea-ted - for example out of a mysti-cal tree trunk from which water spurts into a fountain trough, which was cut out of a single tree trunk. In winter, when long icicles hang from the trees, these artfully designed fountains and benches are par-ticularly romantic and sought-after places to rest for hikers in the Tux Valley. ❚

The members of the “field staff” of the Tourist Board keep hiking trails accessible, create

cross-country ski tracks, make ice, help where necessary and build artful fountains.

Ski Tours in the Tux Valley

Unspoilt nature, a comple-te deep snow experience set in a mesmerising winter landscape. The possibilities for beautiful mountain ski tours around the Tux valley are endless. Tux valley moun-tain guides will point out the most beautiful ski tours and give you advice and guidance on your own adventures and inform you on mountain safe-ty. Here are 3 tour tips:

Glacier Tour

With 66 ultramodern lifts and cable cars in 5 ski resorts al-lowing you to explore 202 km of ski slopes – no wonder the Zillertal 3000 Ski and Glacier World is known as a superla-tive ski region.Insiders recommend a ski tour from Penkenjoch-Finkenberg via the Rastkogel ski area to Eggalm. Save the best ‘til last – the Hintertux Glacier! If you manage a whole glacier round you will put 15,000 al-titude meters and 60 downhill km behind you in one day! The snow-covered slopes of Tux-Lanersbach, Tux- Vorder-lanersbach and Hintertux are unadulterated pleasure!

I t is comfortable to sit on the beautiful benches made of solid tree trunks along the

trails in Tux-Finkenberg. Many of these masterpieces are crea-ted by the skilled hands of Hu-bert Bidner and Franz Geisler. Both are members of the field staff team at Tux-Finkenberg Tourist Board - and that is me-ant literally. They tackle whate-ver jobs are necessary. And there is plenty to do: they have their hands especially full in winter, when it comes to clearing winter hiking trails, tracking the cross-country ski trail or clearing the ice rink - with Hubert working mainly in Tux and Franz in Fin-kenberg. “We are maintenance workers,” says Franz modestly. The two achieve so much more, however, with their commitment, their creativity and their talent for improvisation. But they can’t be everywhere at once. „If guests notice something is amiss, they can send us a photo via the Tux app and then we will take care of it,“ Franz is happy to receive eve-ry suggestion. One of their main tasks is looking after the hiking trails in the Tux Valley.

HIKING TRAILS. There is nothing better than hiking through the wintry Tux Valley when there is fresh snow on the ground. Hubert and Franz know that too and immediately get to work to clear the winter hiking trails after fresh snowfall. Not a simple and, above all, no easy task. “First of all, the snow on the hiking trails is compressed with a snowmobile, so peo-ple can walk on them again as

quickly as possible,” explains Hubert. The trails are then groo-med. Working with a snow blow-er is tedious and often requires the additional use of a shovel. It takes some time, however, to clear the 68 kilometre long net-work of winter walking trails. Both workers are out and about every day, checking the trails, keeping everything in order and making slippery sections sa-fer. “We spread sawdust on the snow, which creates an anti-slip surface. We then sweep up all the sawdust again in spring,” ex-plains Hubert. Why do they not use grit? It would warm up and sink into the snow. You would then need to spread new grit every day. If vehicles can’t access the trails, the two men set out with a

wheelbarrow and shovel, to en-sure the trails are safe. They are quite laid back about the fact that their efforts are often in vain, especially when their work is buried in new snow the very next day. “That is how it is in the Tux Valley We often experience huge dumps of new snow.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAIL AND ICE-SKATING RINK. Hu-bert and Franz also work regular-ly on the Luggi-Gredler-Trail. The 14 km classic cross-country trail and 14 km skating trail between Tux-Vorderlanersbach and Hin-tertux are checked and groomed daily. „We track the trails in the morning, before even the first cross-country skiers are out and about,“ explains Hubert They also look after the ice rink

Franz Geisler, Hubert Bidner and the team of the Tourist Board “field staff” ensure that everything is kept up and running in Tux-Finkenberg.

„TUX 1280“ is the name of the Craft Beer from the Tuxer Craft Beer Brewery, the highest in Austria by the way. Neil Vousden and Timothy Jones have been brewing five extraordinary Craft Beer varieties from the finest ingredients combined with Tux glacier water ever since 2016. “TUX 1280 BLUE is an India Pale Ale. The light brown ale is a refreshing ex-perience, as well as the continuation

of a 150-year-old beer tradition at the same time,“ Tim reveals. Tux Pale Ale owes its characteristic citrus aroma to the combination of the hop varieties of Amarillo, Apollo, Citra and Centennial. The abundance of hops gives this craft beer its very fresh bitterness. Every sip delights beer connoisseurs with a hitherto unknown variety of flavours. The exciting mix of aromas, its fruity citrus scent and the bitter finish make

the Tux Pale Ale a unique pleasure for every beer lover.

BEST FOOD PAIRING OPTIONS: Full flavoured foods harmonise well with TUX 1280 BLUE, as well as mature cheeses, Penne Arrabiata or bitter leaf salads. It is also an ideal accompani-ment to cannelloni, steaks, venison ragout and curries. www.tux1280.at

Ski Show

The ski and snowboard ex-perts of the Tux and the Finkenberg ski schools are masters in their field. Show-casing their acrobatic fi-nesse with the backdrop of fireworks, hot music and spectacular lighting effects – visitors are glued to the spectacle. The snow sports specialists will show you everything that is possible on skis and snowboards, from breath-taking jumps and perfect formations to show-stopping tricks. And all laced with plenty of humour and fun. Entrance is free, the Nightliner bus serves the en-tire Tux Valley making access quick and easy. The Ski Show, performed in the Arena Hin-teranger in Tux-Lanersbach, is a highlight surely not to be missed. Show dates are from January 2020 with a start time of 9.15pm.

Après-Ski

Relax, unwind and let the rays of sunlight soothe your skin. Favoured meeting points are the plentiful ski huts, mountain eateries and chill-out zones for a cosy pit-stop. They all warrant their titles of “quaint & authentic” or “stylish & trendy”. On the heels of fun and frolics on the powdery slopes, hip Après-Ski venues tempt you to the valley. Cool drinks and hot Après-Ski beats make for plenty of flirty fun – winter vibe? It’s a slam dunk!

The Tux-Finkenberg Regular Guest Week will take place for the ninth time next year. What does the regular guest week mean for the Tux-Finkenberg region and what makes it so special?Markus Tipotsch: This week is always a very special one. The Regular Guest Week has been a fixture in Tux-Finkenberg for de-cades and has developed into an extraordinary event over the ye-ars. It is a time when the focus is placed on not only the sum-merly Tux Valley. Throughout the week, cherished regular guests and dedicated hosts cele-brate their years and decades of friendship.

The highlight for the guests is the big gala evening in the spe-cially erected marquee. What makes this evening so special? Markus Tipotsch: It is the com-munity spirit we share with our guests, with whom the evening is celebrated. The atmosphere in the festively decorated marquee is unique every time anew. The entire holiday community of the valley literally sits together at one table on this evening, which is what makes it so special. In the marquee, you always meet good old acquaintances, make new friends and celebrate the unique and long-standing rela-tionship between regular guests and hosts in a companionable at-

mosphere. It is much more than a thank-you; it is a warm and of-ten very emotional expression of the deep friendship and mutual respect that unites all visitors in the marquee.

What points on the pro-gramme do the regular guests enjoy most during this week?Markus Tipotsch: There are many of them, but especially tho-se that focus on the things they have in common. I am particu-larly looking forward to the “Star Hike” to Penkenjoch, followed by holy mass on the mountain. This year it is again one of the great highlights of the Regular Guest Week and, like the traditional gala evening, living proof of the deep friendship between the peo-ple in the region and their guests.

How important is it that every-one in Tux Valley gets involved in the Regular Guest Week?Markus Tipotsch: For the peo-ple in the Tux Valley, the Regu-lar Guest Week is truly dear to their hearts. From holiday hosts to clubs and associations in the valley, as well as countless hono-rary helpers, everyone is actively involved in organising and im-plementing the festival. The way everyone helps together is incredible, and worth its weight in gold. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart.

Every four years, the Regular Guest Week gives us the opportunity to celebrate the special rela-tionship of the region and its people with our guests. ❚

A special week for very special guests

What does the Regular Guest Week mean to you?Markus Tipotsch: As host for the Tux Valley as a whole, I am really looking forward to this week, because it celebrates the special relationship of the people in the valley with their guests every four years. Snowshoeing – the perfect harmony of sport with na-ture. Experienced mountain guides will take you to the most breath-taking beauty spots the holiday region of Tux-Finkenberg has to offer – with no prior knowledge of the sport required. Tours are available in all levels of diffi-culty affording everyone the joy of this unique experience. Equipment can of course be hired in the local sports shops of Tux-Finkenberg.

Snow Hiking

In the holiday region of Tux-Finkenberg there are 68 km of winter hiking trails - some flattened, some cleared and gritted allowing variety! The winter hiking trails to the Eggalm or the Sommerberg are a particular challenge – but rewarded with a superb view of the encompassing mountains. For those who prefer a less energetic route you can take the cable cars up to each particular moun-tain station. Either way, rustic alpine huts provide Zillertal specialities for you to enjoy in their generously sized panoramic restaurants.

U ntil the beginning of the 20th century, the paths

„into Tux“ were undeveloped and thus „adventurous“ - pro-bably because while places in the valley were being “moderni-sed” elsewhere, these trails were left untouched until around 1950. This meant that Erika Hu-batschek was able to take photos of a time that now seems so very distant. Almost like another world! The book, „Das alte Tux“ (The Old Tux)“ with its appro-ximately 200 black-and-white pictures and short texts by con-temporary witnesses brings that era back to life. Away from the nostalgia, these photos tell of the life of the miners: of a labo-

rious and often hard existence, through which the landscape of the Tux Valley with all its beauty, as we appreciate it today, could first emerge. The illustrated book „Das alte Tux“ by Erika and Irmtraud Hu-batschek will be published in December 2019, as a Hubatschek Edition. The photo exhibition „Women from Tux and Women in the Himalayas“ will be on show at Mehlerhaus in Madseit until 17th April, 2020. Irmtraud Hu-batschek juxtaposes women‘s portraits from the Himalayas (1984 to 2016) with photographs of her mother Erika from the Tux Valley in the 1950s. ❚
