This Old HouseExactly 30 years ago, in February 1985, I moved into my Oldsmar house. It was part of abrand new development under construction, so we got to choose our lot and basicfloor plan, as well as carpets, cabinets, color, facing, kitchen flooring, and a few extras. The house is small and was relatively inexpensive (for a house), but it was still a lot ofmoney, so I had some trepidation about whether we were investing wisely. I needn’thave worried. My home’s assessed value may still be close to its original cost, but itsworth to me is much greater than its monetary value. This old house stores preciousmemories, many Mensa-related: monthly game nights, ExComm meetings, Thanksgiv-ing dinners, newsletter assembly parties.

Even though I originally picked house features I liked, over the years I’ve made alter-ations to my home. I painted the walls blue, put up a mural, installed green carpeting, laid down new kitchen tile, had the roof replaced with a lighter color. Even the treeshave changed—I planted a jacaranda to mark the grave of my deceased cat, then my gi-ant pine died and had to be cut down. Bit by bit, my home has been transformed, andnow it looks quite different from the one built 30 years ago.

So it is with Tampa Bay Mensa. When I first joined in 1986, the TBM newsletter wascreated using scissors and glue and everyone got a paper copy in the mail; now ournewsletter is created on a computer and many people receive it electronically. Mem-bers once could qualify with SAT scores, then proctors offered testing sessions in li-braries—neither of those works any more, so we’re starting to rent testing sites thatcharge by the hour. Our Regional Gathering had to move off the beach when that be -came too expensive, and most hotels no longer allow groups to bring in their own foodand beverage—we were lucky to find a great RG hotel in Oldsmar that will accommo-date us, but there weren’t exactly a lot to choose from. I remember when the TBM cal-endar featured movie nights, a parapsychology group, singles events, and music nights, but the hosts of those events are now gone, and so are the events. Instead, our groupnow has quarterly socials/picnics sponsored by the TBM treasury, occasional field tripsto explore sites around the area, and small groups that meet over meals to discussbooks or philosophy. Even games night, like my house’s foundation, has settled someover the years.

One recent change for TBM was our attempt to move our Post Office for mailing theTampa Bay Sounding from St. Petersburg to Tampa, to make it easier to get there dur-ing working hours. We thought we’d finally succeeded last month, but we ran intomultiple unexpected snags, which delayed getting the newsletter out. Members whoopt to get their Sounding in hard copy format didn’t receive it until well into themonth. For this we apologize. And just in case we ever run into problems again, please note that you can always find the Sounding online on the Tampa Bay Mensawebsite, http://www.tampa.us.mensa.org/ An up-to-date calendar is there too.

Another change TBM is facing is that we’re looking for a new Circulation Officer. ArtSchwartz has done a great job for a long time [thanks, Art!], but he’s indicated he willbe leaving our local group, so we need someone new to step up. Art described the jobthusly:

As I See ItDuke Mader

February 2015 Page 5

Another year has slipped by and, as usual,I’m not ready to face a new year of chal-lenges. This is one of a few times eachyear when i get emotional and reflect onthe many different events that have ef-fected my judgement.

l see many families whose source of in-come is no longer there, and people livingin automobiles because they have noplace else to go. I wonder why.

I see dirty faces on children whose needsare great and whose opportunities arelimited. I see abandoned and beaten chil-dren and I cry deep inside; we have a hu-mane society to protect dogs and cats, yetour children are battered, tortured, andthose who survive are turned loose on so-ciety to vent their anger.

I see a rising divorce rate in this countrytaking a cancerous bite out of our moralfiber, and I know the pain.

I watch young people in love; they holdhands, sit close, and speak without talk-ing. The look in their eyes and theirsmiles are peaceful. Then these same twopeople many times grow apart, and Iwonder why.

Did you ever watch a flower bloom? Didyou ever notice how a flower begins withjust a few leaves, then one day, on thosesame leaves appear buds, and you sit andwatch, all day if you want, and nothinghappens? The next day there is a beatifulflower, and you no longer ask why, butyou just enjoy the flower. Then one daythe flower is gone and you wonder whycouldn’t it last forever‘?

Did you ever meet someone you know inpublic, like in a store, and not say ‘hello’because you were busy, or just didn’t takethe time, and then later felt guilty? Some-times I wonder what it would be like tobe absolute ruler of the world. I would beable to control hunger, war, and strife,

but then I know it’s only a dream be-causee no one can control the thoughts inanother man's mind, or the wishes in hisheart. As Iong as there is an evil thoughtin this world, there is evil. Since we can’tget rid of evil, should we be content justto live with it? I hope not.

Every year there is an election, and thisyear there were several politicians whispent sums like eight and nine milliondollars to win an office that pays 50 or 60thousand dollars per year. There must behorrid curruption at these levels ofgov-ernment that would enable a man tomake his money back with a profit in justa few short years.

Did you ever watch a TV,program.aboutfamily life where sickness, poverty, andcomplex social problems were all workedout, and wonder why it doesn't work likethat in real life?

How come in those new car commercialsthey always show pictures of the cars infront of expensive houses or fancy yachts?"Most people who buy cars are just nor-mal middle-class citizens.

Why don't you see men .in undershirtswith their shoes off, watching TV, talkingabout their favorite beer?

l wonder how many women polish theirfloors while wearing designer jeans, andan apron?

Well there l go rambling on again. Unfor-tunately, we still have many unansweredquestions and a short supply of answers.Perhaps you have an answer and wouldcare to share it. It would certainly be ap-preciated.

Think about it.

RVC Column for Region 10Thomas George Thomas

American Mensa has entered into another membership renewal season, which meansif you are not a life member or in the middle of a multi-year membership, you’ve al -ready received a notice from the National Office to send in your dues.

Why should you renew? I’ve covered member benefits in earlier columns, so I’d like toaddress another question I frequently hear around this time: Why should you be amember of Mensa? What does Mensa DO?

The usual answer to this is the social aspect: Local Groups hold a variety of eventshosted by member volunteers, and American Mensa sponsors larger scale events suchas the Annual Gathering and Mind Games, plus online connection through Facebookand the Mensa Community Forums and contests such as CultureQuest. (Side note: Cul-tureQuest is coming up in April – form your local teams soon! You can find more de-tails and get practice questions at www.us.mensa.org/culturequest). For most of these, you must be a member to participate, but historically, fewer than 20% of our memberstake advantage of any of these on a year-to-year basis.

But the social aspect is only one part of American Mensa. The Constitution of Mensaoutlines three purposes for Mensa:

1. Identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity;

2. Encourage research in the nature, characteristics and uses of intelligence; and

3. Provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for members.

So If Local Groups and online communities are fulfilling the third leg of our Purpose, who is handling the first two? That would be the Mensa Foundation (AKA the MensaEducation and Research Foundation, or MERF). The Mensa Foundation handles a num-ber of initiatives, but the ones that members participate in most directly are the Collo -quiums, the Mensa Scholarship program, and the Gifted Youth Program.

The Colloquiums are single-issue educational events which started back in 1982 andwhich have included topics such as The Gifted in Society, Consciousness, Genealogyand Crime Scene Intelligence. The upcoming Colloquium will be held the day beforethe Annual Gathering in Louisville on the topic of Brain Health.

The Mensa Scholarship program has been run by the Foundation for many years, ac-cepting applications from September through January, with members throughout thecountry helping to judge the thousands of essays received during January throughMay, with winners announced in May. This is one of the great service opportunitiesfor members.

And definitely not least, the Gifted Youth Program (especially important in Florida withthe burgeoning group of young members in our region) has been providing guidanceand planning through tools such as the Excellence in Reading program and the Mensafor Kids website (mensaforkids.org), which has recently gone through a rewrite, mak-ing it much more user-friendly through mobile devices. This website is co-sponsoredby the Library of Congress, and contains lesson plans and activities for youth, includinggames and TED talks geared towards younger members.

So if you’re interested in a social community, we’re here for you! But American Mensaalso provides service beyond our membership, and we thank you for helping to makethis happen. Visit www.mensafoundation.org for more information.

America Stops the TortureRonnie Dubs

February 2015 Page 7

I had this really mean 5th grade teacher, she’d give us so much homework it was tor-ture. Of course in the end no one was killed, maimed, or seriously injured we all sur -vived it. Torture is funny word like that, so powerful yet indefinable. I mean when Isaw my fellow Americans leaping out the top floors of the WTC on 9-11 with theircloths on fire that was torture to me.

So I guess you can say people who get banged up against hollow walls, dunked under-water, and kept without sleep until they revealed their contacts and future murderousplots against us may have been tortured, as a loose definition of the word.

If you don’t know, in 2011 with Ms. Feinstein heading the Senate Intelligence Commit -tee, President Obama changed NSA rules to allow for the complete domestic spying onAmericans. To actually do that which they’d accused Bush of, Ms. Feinstein was per-fectly fine with spying on all our phone calls and emails; she was fine spying on thesupposedly free press as well. But only after it was revealed that she too was beingspied on did she launch this vendetta against our intelligence services culminating inher so called “Torture Report”, a partisan report which was compiled from documentswithout CIA input or any Republican cooperation. That she herself didn’t know aboutthese techniques strains credulity as many have testified under oath both she andNancy Pelosi were fully briefed on this.

So why would Ms. Feinstein choose release this report with most of it already knownand depicted accurately in movies? Was she so bitter from losing her Senate majorityposition as to commit one last act of treason against this country? One last chance forthis old time anti-American leftist to embarrass this country, to make our nation moredespised, to provide propaganda for our global enemies, or to get current hostages sub-ject to even worse abuse and real torture.

Like Ms. Feinstein, Barrack Obama was also raised on animus for the policies of this na-tion and worked from day one to withdraw American influence from the world. He didso naively believing this would lead to a more just and harmonious world, but nowjust look at the results of that folly.

Now I admit I was raised on love and reverence for this nation, and cannot fathom theleft’s antipathy for it. We have spent vast fortunes unknown in history to end racialdiscrimination and help our poorest citizens though they remain ungrateful. From WWII to the Korean conflict, Vietnam to Desert Storm and our operations in Iraq wherereal and systemic brutal torture was occurring, America ends the torture of others wedo not condone it. We do not steal the resources of others as the left alleges. We freepeople to sell their own resources under a banner of democracy to provide all their cit -izens that wealth and not opulent palaces for dictators. America doesn’t enslave peoplewe liberate then and give them a chance for a better life, and now that the true natureof this world is being revealed daily, perhaps the left should re-evaluate their inherenthatred of this country.

Except for rare cases that hosts will make clear, all events listed in our Calendar ofEvents, whether hosted in private homes or public venues, are open to all Mensans, their spouses, and accompanied guests.

While kitty amounts are mandatory, hosts often spend far more than the specifiedamount. Donations in excess of the kitty amount will be appreciated. If you havespecial needs or restrictions, it is prudent to discuss them with your host before at-tending an event.

tomatoes here! Cold fresh green romaine lettuce, shredded carrots, red cabbage and fresh ripe diced tomatoes with a red wine vinaigrette in separate container. Look for a Sounding on the table. No RSVP needed.

The circulation officer helps prepare the Sounding for mailing and takes it to the postoffice. We need a reliable person to ensure the Sounding is delivered on time to all ourmembers. This is a wonderful first job for someone looking to help the group. You getto meet other members at the monthly TLC [Tape, Label & Chat] party. Also you get anearly preview of the Sounding. There is a small stipend to cover the cost of driving tothe post office. It only takes a few hours a month.

If you think you can help us out here, please contact me ([email protected])or any other member of the ExComm—contact info on the inside back cover of this is-sue.

You should also be aware that the registration rate for TBM’s Regional Gathering, Mar-garita Bay, will go up on February 14, so save yourself some money by registering now.(Visit the TBM website http://www.tampa.us.mensa.org/ and click on the owl.) Thisyear the whole hotel is being reserved just for our group, and we already have a bunchof great programs lined up. More details will be forthcoming soon, but I can tell youthe RG promises to be Bigger and Better! (Really, you won’t want to miss it!)

That’s all the housekeeping news I have for now. Till next month ...

Calling all writers, poets, bloggers, and scribblers ofall kinds. (I know you’re out there.)

At the most recent ExComm meeting, I found myself saying to David Schwartz, our Tampa Bay Mensa SIG Coordinator, “I’d like to start a Writers’ SIG.” Although I have been thinking of how to connect with other local Mensa writers, I was still a little surprised to find the words leaving my mouth with such conviction, as I usually need to mull and ruminate over ideas for quite awhile before they actually manifest. I guess it was time.Although “TBM Writers’ SIG” is a fine working title, I’m thinking that a group of wordsmiths ought to be able to come up with something with a little more dash and panache. So let’s make our first order of business “Name That SIG!” Due to how busy the holidays are for everyone, I’m not even going totry to plan anything for December, but I will be getting something into the calendar for January. Until then, send me an e-mail at [email protected], message me on Facebook, or give me a call at727-543-2004 and let’s bounce some ideas off each other for how we’d like to see this SIG shape up.

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village, though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year. ...
