February / March / April 2015 Page 1 of 8 Dear Readers, February / March / April 2015 We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year and we welcome you to the first edition of the Positive Ageing Together newsletter for 2015. It is full of activities to keep you busy from February to April. It was wonderful to see so many of our PAT readers enjoying the Holly Jolly Christmas Trivia event in December. This was the first time the Positive Ageing Team has run a trivia activity and we received some great feedback. Carly worked hard to organise this event and we were delighted to hear that we “got the grey matter moving” while entertaining our guests. On Thursday 26 March the Positive Ageing Team will be holding a Facebook and Skype information session. This session will cover the basics including opening an account and staying secure – and show you how to connect with family members and friends (Details page 4). We are also calling all readers to help the Positive Ageing Team raise awareness of Seniors Rights for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on the 15 th of June, 2015. Last year, Frankston was transformed into a sea of purple as we ‘yarn-bombed’ trees, poles and bollards in Wells Street and Shannon Mall. This year, we are seeking your help to knit or crochet purple squares to be used as wool covers – or yarn bombs – to be displayed around the Frankston area (Details on how to help on page 8). The Positive Ageing Team also welcomes a new staff member – Laura Day – who joined us in December. Laura is a great addition to the team and she would love you to introduce yourself when you see her at our activities this year. We are also calling all readers to help the Positive Ageing Team raise awareness of Seniors Rights for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on the 15th of June, 2015. “I am entering into my 7th week following my second hip replacement, and I have formulated some guidelines of important things to consider when approaching a hip or knee replacement -

1. Learn all you can about your upcoming operation before-hand by reading, seeking advice from professionals and from friends. Beware of negative advice against having surgery because one person has had a bad experience.

2. Make sure that you are comfortable with your own choice of doctor and seek a second opinion if you want to.

3. Take advantage of your pre-op hospital visit to inform you of what to expect. 4. It is valuable to have the support of a partner, friend or family member through the entire

process. 5. Never expect your operation to be the same as another person’s. Also, do not compare your

first operation with the current one, on the other hip or knee. After my right hip - I expected this one of my left hip to be identical - but the healing processes have been slightly different.

6. Be diligent in following the daily exercise regime set for rehabilitation.

I am now looking forward to driving myself, attending my exercise classes, U3A classes and long walks with my friends. I also feel very grateful to my surgeon and thankful to live in an area with wonderful hospitals and rehabilitation centres.”
