Wiseman wrote and delivered an oral impact statement to the courtroom on Thurs., Feb. 16. According to Wiseman’s Message from the President, which was posted on mySXU and sent via email last Friday, the impact statement weighed heavily in the court’s decision to administer such a high penalty for Piros. Piros pled guilty in Oct. for embezzling $854,493 from the university in false claims from at least 1998 to July 2009. SXU’s claim with its insurance provider has since been satisfied. “The U.S. Attorney’s Office indicated that the sentence was something of a new standard for white collar crimes of [Piros’] nature,” Wiseman said. Piros’ guilty plea stipulated that she could face a prison sentence of 37 to 46 months. She will have to pay restitution to Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of America and undergo two years of supervised release once out of prison. Using school-issued and personal credit cards and knowing expenses under $10,000 only needed her approval, Piros sent fraudulent requests for reimbursement for “school-related” expenses in amounts less than $10,000. She did not submit any reimbursement requests when SXU did its annual audit. Piros sought reimbursement on fictitious loans that she provided to SXU, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The release further states that Piros sought and obtained checks on a monthly basis (except July and August) by identifying the expenses as a “paydown” of the fake loans. SXU’s policy at the time, according to the release, was to write a check made payable directly to the employee, with the understanding that the employee would then pay the credit card issuer. Piros took the checks and converted university funds for her own benefit. After being questioned by university investigators, Piros created false documents—such as spreadsheets—that contained false information to cover her tracks. The release states that approximately $828,005.96 was By Genevieve Bonadonna Editor in Chief The State of the University By Macy Zamudio News Editor “We are Chicago’s University on the south side.” So were the booming words from President Christine Wiseman as she delivered her second annual State of the University address in front of a packed Butler Reception Room crowd on Tues., Feb. 21. The words echoed the themes of re-establishing visibility, revitalizing Saint Xavier University’s identity and forging new thought leadership inside the community and beyond. Wiseman spent the majority of her hour-long speech revealing and discussing a set of initiatives intended to refine SXU’s role as an institution of higher learning. “To change our words is to change our strategies, is to change our outcomes,” Wiseman said before unveiling six goals to be By Genevieve Bonadonna Editor in Chief New documentary course in Fall 2012 A new course, History 250-02: Documentary Filmmaking, is being offered to SXU students for the Fall 2012 semester. The course was inspired by a documentary-making project that Saint Xavier University history professor Graham Peck’s students worked on extensively during the previous semester. On Feb. 1, students from Peck’s Illinois history class screened their documentary based on the life of Illinois senator Stephen A. Douglas. Many students, faculty, and staff were present at the screening. After the showing, a lively discussion about the project took place and Peck’s students received high recognition from the audience for being able to create such an amazing work. Among the many people who were present at the screening was SXU President Christine Wiseman. Wiseman enjoyed the documentary and was awed by the end results of the students’ work. “I was very impressed. I was impressed by the level at which students can function when they are mentored to high level expectations. I think you saw those expectations reflected in Dr. Peck’s approach to this project with his students. I was also very impressed by the level of interest in collaboration among our academic wants and media services,” Wiseman said. “I’m very happy that I was able to be there for the screening and the discussion – these things make my day.” The high levels of interest that the project had helped spark talks of having a course dedicated to making such works. Wiseman commented on previous efforts by several faculty members to enact such a course. “What struck me as well MSPJ hopes to put dent in hunger By Karina Palencia News Editor The Mercy Students for Peace and Justice (MSPJ) at Saint Xavier University has started collecting money for local Catholic Charities that provide food for pantries. The Xavierite, which is classified as a non-daily newspaper with more than 4,000 students in enrollment, went up against the likes of Columbia College, Loyola Chicago and DePaul University, among other universities. Kane McKeown, senior features editor, and Becki Brown, features editor, took first place for their “Chicago on a Budget” middle-spread from Fall 2011. Kelly Lindsey, former senior viewpoints editor, won second place for best column in the viewpoints section for her article: “This Just in: Facebook Doesn’t Cure Cancer.” Brown got and honorable mention for her critical review of the film No Strings Attached. Genevieve Bonadonna, editor in chief, took honorable mention for her news story regarding anti- abortion messages written on sidewalks around campus. There was some scandal this year, however—opinion pieces sent in by staff across IL were not returned because the judge of the category did not return the entries or respond to inquiries. All colleges were asked to resubmit their opinion pieces. page 3 COURSE > Susan Piros. UNIVERSITY RELATIONS An SXU student waits for her card to be swiped. VIRGINA (WAPO)— Virginia’s House of Delegates and Senate have passed a bill that mandates ultrasounds prior to an abortion. Several people have been outspoken about the bill, claiming the procedure—which in many cases will involve inserting a probe into the vagina—is state-sponsored rape. EGYPT (NYTIMES)—The

transitional government of Egypt agreed on Sunday to sign a loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund, woth $3.2 billion. The loan is a much needed lifeline to Egypt, a country that is experiencing an economic crisis and social unrest.

MEXICO CITY (REUTERS)—At least 44 people have died in a prison fight between rival gangs in Mexico on Sunday. Victims in the riot were beaten, stabbed, and stoned; it is not yet clear who instigated the attacks. About 50,000 people have been killed in Mexico in the past five years.

INDIA (HUFFPO)— A school bus plunged into a river in New Delhi Saturday, killing six children and one adult. Police say the driver lost control of the vehicle. Both the driver and conductor jumped from the vehicle as it was hurling in the river and were unharmed.

PresidentObamahasrightfullycomeunder fire after the recentdictate, bytheHealthandHumanServicesDepartment (HHS), thatprivate health employers, whichinclude religious organizations, must cover birth control in theirinsuranceprograms. After the United StatesCouncil of Catholic Bishops(USCCB) and people acrossthe country, includingmany ofPresidentObama’sallies, expressedtheirdisgust, thepresidentofferedahalfheartedcompromise(Reuters). Now,insteadoftheemployershavingtocoverthebirthcontrol, the insurance companies mustprovide it. Religious institutionsmust violate their consciencesanddirectly or indirectly providecontraceptiveservices. Thus, religiousfreedomis, infact, underattackasCatholicpriestsall across thenationpreached intheirhomiliestwoweeksago. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, presidentoftheUSCCB,claimedthat“theadministrationisonthewrong side of the constitution”in its pursuit of this mandate(USCCB.org). “Thisshouldn’thappeninalandwherefreeexerciseofreligionranksfirstintheBillofRights,”he

emphasized(USCCB.org). As a Catholic, I too amdisgusted that the governmentis attempting tomeddle in thechurch’s affairs. Separation ofchurch and state goes bothways. You cannot impose religiousdoctrines in public schools;likewiseyoucannotimposeseculardoctrinesuponreligiousgroups. TheCatholicChurchteachesthat birth control, including the“morning-afterpill”iswrong. It is irrelevant that hugenumbers ofCatholics use birthcontrol. TheCatholicChurch’sofficial doctrine opposes it, andthatisallthatmatters. Therefore, if the CatholicChurchteachesthatbirthcontroliswrongbutCatholicinstitutionsaremandatedtoprovidebirthcontrol, thatmandate is infringing upontheirfreedomtopracticereligion. Thisistheheartoftheissue;not that the Catholic Churchis telling women not to usecontraception, but thatmany ofits followers are being forced tosurrenderafirstamendmentright. Andthisisnotthefirsttimethatthegovernmenthassoughttointrudeonreligiousliberties. Last year, a case entitled“Hosanna-Tabor EvangelicalLutheranChurch and School v.Equal EmploymentOpportunityCommission”wenttotheSupremeCourt, whereawomansoughttosueaLutheranchurchforfederalworkplacediscrimination.

Ifthesuithadbeenallowed,it would have set a precedentfor government regulation ofchurch hiring and ministerialappointments. Fortunately, inaunanimousdecision inJanuary, theSupremeCourt ruled that “churches andotherreligiousgroupsmustbefreetochooseanddismisstheirleaderswithoutgovernmentinterference”(NYTimes). But unfor tunate ly, thegovernment has not learned itslesson as it attempts to imposeconscience-violating regulationsonCatholic and other religiousinstitutions. All of us, whether religiousor not, have core values thatwewouldfeelsickviolating.Allofushave consciences that come intoplay whenwe feel we are doingsomethingthatiswrong. All of us should respectreligiousinstitutions’rightsnottoprovideservicestheyfeelarewrong. Itisnotasifwomenarebeingprevented from receiving birthcontrol.WomenintheU.S.havefullrightsunderthelawtodoso.Theyshouldn’texpectaCatholicinstitutiontoprovideitforthem. Wemustprovethatwehaveaseparationofchurchandstateandcompletelysquashthismandate. Forthisreason,Istandbehindthe bishops, priests and othercatholicandreligiousleadersastheycontinue their uncompromisingfightforreligiousfreedom.

Point: Contraception mandate goes too far

In their article, “BishopsRenewCall toLegislativeActiononReligiousLiberty,”theUnitedStates Conference of CatholicBishops(USCCB)reiteratedtheiropposition of the Health andHuman Services mandate oncontraceptivecoverage. One of themain points intheircalltoactionisthatCatholicseverywhereshouldbeoutragedthatCatholic institutionsarerequiredto provide what the USCCBbelieves to be an abortifacient toemployees. I have heard this argumentmanytimes, andIamgettingprettytiredofhearingitacceptedasvalid. Believing something is truehardenoughforlongenoughdoesnotmakeitso, asconvincingasthecasemay seemwhen consideringthe USCCB’s take on humanbiology. In their article, theUSCCBclaims, “...forcing plans to coverabortifacients violates existingfederalconsciencelaws. Therefore,we called for the recissin of themandatealtogether,”(usccb.org). The con t r a c ep t i ve s in

question arenot, and cannot be,abortifacients. That is simplynothowthesecontraceptivesfunction. AsIstatedinanearlierarticleaboutHealthandHumanServicesSecretaryKathleen Sebelius, thecontraceptive in question, themorning-after pill, is simply notanabortifacient.Themost it candoispreventafertilizedeggfromimplantingontheuteranwall. I have said it before andI will say it again--this does notqualifythemorning-afterpillasanabortifacient. TheAmericanCongress ofGynecologists andObstetriciansstate that pregnancy begins atimplantationofthefertilizedegg, notatthemomentoffertilizationitself. This point is one that bearsrepeating, because theUSCCB,among others, still believe thatemergencycontraceptionqualifiesasanabortifacient. Their belief that this pillis an abortifacient is the root oftheir claim that the newHealthandHumanServicesmandateoncontraception coverage shouldbe considered a “grave moralconcern,”(usccb.org). Once the actual biologicalfactsareconsidered, however, theConference ofCatholic Bishopsloseallgroundingtotheirprimaryargument.

IbelieveitistellingthatthattheUSCCBdoesnot completelyconsider scientific facts whenforming their essential moralarguments. Idonotbelievethatthefactswereeverreallyaconcerntobeginwith. Themoralissueatstakehereisaveryoldone.Onemightevenconsideritentirelymisplacedinthecenturywelivein. The Catholic Church isdoctrinallyopposed to theuseofanykindofcontraceptionbecauseitprevents life. But,bynotbeingconsistentlypregnant,IguessIampreventing lifemost of the time, too. I find it difficult to drawany kind of rational line whenwegettothepointwheretheuseof contraceptives is consideredimmoral, especiallywhenwomen’suseistheissueatstakehere. Ibelievemyrighttoahealthplanthatcoversmysexualhealth,be it the use of contraceptionor sterilization, if my medicalcircumstances cal led for i t ,entirely trumpsmy employer’spersonalbeliefthattheveryuseofcontraceptionisimmoral. If aU.S. Bishop is ever inposessionofauterus, perhapsIwillreconsidermystance. But I do not see tha thappeninganydaysoon.
