INSIDE THIS ISSUE From the Pastor resting place and this can only

be found in the person of Jesus Christ. As we go into this year, I hope you will set some goals in

the area of spiritual disciplines. These are spiritual, personal practices which bring us closer to the Lord; things like Bible study and meditation on God’s

Word, and private extended times of prayer. I have found keeping a prayer journal of my conversations with the Lord and my thoughts about his Word is a

very helpful practice as well. Fasting for short periods focuses our hearts on God and the things that He wants to do in our lives.

Dear Friends in Christ,

I hope you have had time to

consider the new year and the goals you might have for 2020. I have been hearing people say lately that they never thought they would be living in the year

2020. It seems so futuristic to rattle off that date, yet here we are. We are living in a new era of human life, where techno-logy has radically altered how

we live. If you consider what the world was like in 1920, the pace of knowledge and science and engineering has truly trans-

Winter Weather Church

Closing Policy

This policy addresses snow and ice events. The Pastor and Clerk of Session will be moni-toring the weather conditions through the National Weather Service and State of Delaware Emergency Management sites. If by 6:00 a.m. hazardous con-ditions exist in the church park-ing lot, the 8:00 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. services will be cancelled. We will have the worship ser-vice at 11:00 a.m. for those who can make it. The contrac-tor responsible for snow re-moval will be advised the park-ing lot has to be cleared in time for the 11:00 a.m. service to be held. Notification will be made through church e-mail and WBOC. If possible, we will post on the church’s website as well. We encourage everyone to stay safe and not travel out, if you are in doubt. It will be our practice to have Sunday Service unless the Governor declares a State of Emergency.

Treasurer’s Report Jack Lesher, Treasurer

January 1, 2019 –December 31 ,2019

General Fund 2019 2018

Revenue……… $447,792 $441,676 Expenditures ..... $422,944 $429,609 Excess Revenue $ 24,848 $ 12,067

Comments: Do you see what I see? Revenues are greater in 2019 by $6,000 AND ex-penditures are lower in 2019 by $6,500. That adds up to $12,500 greater excess revenues for the year 2019 over 2018. Let’s now see what the new year brings to go forth and serve our Lord God Almighty.

Mission 2019 2018

January 1 Carryover ………$ 5,112 $ 6,943 Revenue………...$84,214 $86,969 Disbursements…..$86,777 $88,800 Carry Over ... … $ 2,550 $ 5,112 Ending December 31, 2019 Comments: Here’s a question….why did we give $2,700 less for Missions in 2018 vs 2019? Do you feel we had already given too much to mission efforts? There is so much need all around us for spiritual nourishment as well as physical nourishment. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL 8:00am— Welcome to the 8:00 Sunday School discussion. We have the opportunity to share our under- standing with each other as we review the Scripture.

These winter months we are looking at the “how” we “Honor God.” Both the Old Testament and the New Testament are the scriptural basis for the discussion. Worship is vital for our expression of this honor.

Join us in the Conference Room. All are welcome……. Clarence Bauman

9:15am— Our class is continuing the 12-week study of C.S. Lewis’ classic masterpiece of religious satire, The Screwtape Letters. Screwtape the devil gives Wormwood his protégé detailed advice on various methods of under- mining God's words and of promoting abandonment of God in "the Patient", interspersed with observations on human nature and on the Bible. In Screwtape's advice, selfish gain and power are seen as the only good, and neither demon can comprehend God's love for man or acknowledge human virtue. This negative approach points out many of our human failings and helps us depend more fully on God’s grace.

If you have any questions about the class, contact Jim or Marianne Miller.

MISSION

“Aquila and Priscilla” have been working with the “Eaglet” people of Western China since the fall of 2016. For security reasons, we cannot share their real names or pictures.

When Aquilla and Priscilla first met the Eaglets there was no written language. At first, they lived in a village down the mountain from the Eaglets. China increased security, forcing a move to the “Capitol City” of the province. Eaglet students attending university were hired to help with translat-ing. Aquila and Priscilla traveled to the mountains occasionally to test the translations with Eaglet friends; until a new governor arrived. In 2018 multiple check points were added throughout Capital City – sometimes as often as one every 600 feet! Translation work became dangerous. Several times their home and persons were searched looking for illegal materials. Knowing time was short, they worked feverishly with their translation team. After their 2019 trip home, it was likely they would not be permitted to return to Capitol City.

Translating is an exacting process. The Initial Draft involves an individual looking at a translation in a language they understand and producing an Eauage version. They work with another team mem-ber who uses various translations, Greek or Hebrew texts and other translations tools. After the ini-tial draft there is an “internal team-check”, where the team checks for correctness and completeness, comparing it to other languages like the Greek or Hebrew originals as well as to other translations, making names of people and places consistent, and even working on section headings, spelling, and punctuation. Then a new person does a Back Translation, from Eauage into English, for translation checking and comprehension testing. This is followed by a consultant check and finally an audio recording in Eauage can be made. For the safety of all, the voice on the recording must not be identifiable. Audio versions are essential as most Eaglets are illiterate. It is easier (and safer) to add an App to your cellphone to listen to the Bible in your language than it is to obtain a smuggled version of a forbidden text!

The team has made significant progress! The audio recording of Luke is ready for distribution. Jonah and Genesis are ready for recording. John, 1/2/3 John and Acts are with external consultants. Internal Team checks are ongoing for 1/2 Corinthians, 1/2 Timothy, James, Romans, Matthew, Mark, Exodus, Joshua, 1/2 Thessalonians, and Revelation. Judges and Ruth are being drafted.

After visiting in August 2019 Aquila, Priscilla, and their two-year-old son, went to South Korea. There they continued working with external consultants, awaiting the birth of their daughter in October. We do not know where Aquila and Priscilla are currently. They had hopes of finding a location which would allow them to work freely and openly and where their primary translators would be able to obtain visas for a long-term stay. Please pray that if they have not already reunited with their translation team that God will provide them with a safe place to work together soon.

YOUTH RALLY 2020

INSEPARABLE

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

A total of 18 youth and adult chaperones from LPC attended this year’s youth rally held in Ocean City, Maryland January 10-12th. There were approximately 3,000 youth and adults at the weekend-long event. We had an amazing weekend filled with worship music, inspiring speakers and breakout sessions focusing on various topics such as peer pressure, sharing your faith with others, testimonies of those leading worship and music, and opportunities for leaders to connect with each other. The speakers focused on how much relationship matters; that knowing God through a per-sonal relationship is the goal rather than simply knowing who God is; the importance of family and Christian friends as well as striv-ing to live for significance rather than success; significance in accepting and believing in Jesus through faithfulness and devotion to the call the Lord has on our lives.
