We want to thank everyone for the honor of being your 2020 Chapter

Couple of the Year. We will be entering the selection process for Flor-

ida District Couple of the Year in March and the state rally. So make

plans to attend and show the district what FL1-H chapter PRIDE is all

about!!!!

We have been on several rides with the chapter lately and it is good

to see the member turn out for them. The chapter is working hard for

you the members to plan events that you enjoy.

See everyone on the next ride!

This past Saturday fourteen of us headed to Blue Springs Park to see the manatee, There was a little bit of a wait getting into the park, but it was a beauti-ful day, weather was great. There were not as many manatee as earlier in the week, but we saw plen-ty. The mom's were protecting the babies. We saw lots of fish and they were very large. Mike did a great job walking in the park, a little slow but kept up with everyone. Then it was time to make a decision on where to have lunch, we agreed to go to Bryan's Barbeque in Deland the company was great and the food was good. Be sure you make your reservations for our sweet-heart Cruise on the 15th of February. We have gone on this cruise before always had a great time and the food is delicious. See you there. The weather has been crazy, one day it is beautiful and the next day it is cold and rainy. So remember to come in your car, all we want is your company. Be sure to check the calendar for some more get to-gethers. Don't forget we have a new place for our monthly meetings. Ride Safe Mike & Irene

It is February already. The time when all thoughts turn

to Superbowls, the Daytona 500, bikeweek, and rallies. We

have passed the 24 hours of Daytona and by the time you read this the

Daytona 500 will be history. In March we have bikeweek and the Flori-

da District rally. Each year during bikeweek chapter FL1-H has a all-

you-can-eat breakfast at the Ormond Beach Elks lodge on Wilamette

ave. in Ormond Beach. Put it in your plans to attend. March 07th, 9am

to 11am We have held this event for several years and it never gets

old just better. If you have forgotten how to get there visit our web

site for the flier and directions. Bring your friends, eat your fill then go

visit the area venders. We have a 50-50 that you don’t have to stay to

win. How can you beat that. This is followed the next week end by the

Florida District rally in Altamonte Springs at the Hilton. A great event

at a great venue. If you haven’t already get your reservation in. Our

chapter has vender security on Friday morning so if you are going to

be there then see one of the chapter officers to sign up. At the closing

ceremony on Sunday is when they give away the new Goldwing. You

don’t have to be there to win but it would great to be sitting there

when your name was called. Of course for that to happen you need to

buy a ticket. If you are a levels member and haven’t purchased a ticket

shame on you. Sale of these tickets go to support the District Rider Ed-

ucation program. In other states when you take ERC, TRC, or MSF

courses it costs you hundreds of dollars. In Florida it is free. All of the

expenses of these programs are paid from the precedes of this raffle.

Not only are you supporting your District Rider Education program and

get these programs free you may win one of the great prizes. First

prize a new Goldwing or $10,000, second prize $1000, or third prize of

$500. If you sell the winning ticket you get $200. With all this money

floating around you definitely want to be in on it. Buy your tickets now

while they are still available and get in on the action. If you don’t you

can’t possibly win.

With the season winding down to sell our Gold-

wing bike tickets, we will have a big push to sell out during

Bikeweek. PLEASE assist in anyway you can to get these sold. The

funds raised goes to rider education for FREE that’s right FREE edu-

cational courses in Florida. If you want or need a TRC, ARC, Co-

rider, Road Captain Parking lot assistance, and much much more,

that is where the funds go.

Our chapter has the luxury of having a University Trainer on our

team. Let’s take advantage of his knowledge and leadership skills.

There are some new and exciting items coming from GWRRA and I

look forward to bringing those to the chapter.

In closing I want to send out a very sincere and heart felt thank you

to Senior Ride Educator Rick and Pam Northrop. These folks have

dedicated many years and countless hours to Florida Rider Educa-

tion. They have decided to turn the reigns over to a new Florida Dis-

trict Ride Educator. His name is Dominick Desiato from FL1-A Tam-

pa. Let us give him the same respect and assistance as he familiar-

izes himself with the task at hand.

Another Bikeweek is closing in fast. We are gearing up for our An-

nual Biker Breakfast hosted by the Elk’s in Ormond Beach. Anna Ci-

rillo does a great job to have her lodge host us. Come out and enjoy

the food and friends. We have fliers that need to be distributed

around town to help draw in the bikes. So please take some at the

meeting and hang them up.

The Florida district rally is right after bikeweek and the chapter has

several items and people in different competitions, so come over

and support the district and your chapter.

Next up will be May as we honor our local Motorcycle Police Officer

of the Year. The nominations will be going out soon. We look for-

ward to the response and finding our next candidate.

Motorcycle Crashes - Ignorance or Arrogance;

Which Type of Rider are You? A recent motorcycle crash in Sarasota

involving five motorcycles was what inspired me to write this article.

The way the news report read was that there was a group of motorcy-

cles riding on the interstate. The lead rider lost control of his motorcy-

cle while passing a tractor trailer truck, fell off his motorcycle and

struck the wheel of a truck and was killed. The next four motorcyclists

then lost control of their motorcycles and fell off of their bikes. Three

of them went to the hospital. So, my question to you is this: Ignorance

or Arrogance? Ignorance as defined by the dictionary is simply "the

lack of knowledge." This would include not knowing "how to ride,

where to ride, and what to do should something go wrong." The 1981

Hurt Report, whose findings are still true today, stated that in 80% of

motorcycle crashes the rider did not do anything to avoid the crash.

The news story did not state the exact cause the first rider went

down, but it could have been something as simple as being too close

to the tractor trailer truck he was passing and getting startled by the

sudden wind blast that often occurs. That cause could fall under the

"Ignorance" category, for being too close to the truck and not antici-

pating the wind blast. How about now seeing how the cause might fit

in the "Arrogance" category. We have all seen it. The riders with the

bold attitude of: "This is my road, I have a right to be here, and I am

going to intimidate everyone to get out of my way" (usually by exces-

sive exhaust noise and purposely riding too close to other vehicles

they are passing). We really don't know the reason of the first rider

going down at this point, but it was probably one of the examples I

have just described. How about the next four riders who went down?

Obviously, they were all following too close to the lead bike to proper-

ly react. Again, why were they following too close: "Ignorance or Ar-

rogance"? We can all make mistakes through "Ignorance", but let’s

not contribute to the possibility of crashing by adding "Arrogance."

Ride safe!
