FROM THE RECTOR’S DESK
As I write this piece in mid-February we are rapidly approaching Ash Wednesday and then the season of Lent. So many of us learned that the observance of Lent was to be marked by giving up something significant to us. Certainly self-denial, in whatever form we undertake it, is a valuable discipline to add to our Lenten programs, but Lent is more than this. I ask that we not lose sight of the original purpose for this season. Lent is a time of preparation, a time of ‘self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word,’ the body of Christ is restored by reconciliation. In early times it was a season of preparing new converts for Baptism at Easter; for all of us it is a time to revisit our own baptismal vows. Lent is our chance to prepare ourselves for the solemn events of Holy Week and the awesome glory of Easter.
As in previous years we shall have a service of Stations of the Cross on Wednesdays at 5pm, followed by
some teaching and a light supper of bread and soup. Our study this year is one I absolutely urge you not to miss! We shall be studying Surprised by Hope by Tom Wright, I believe the best work on what the bible really teaches about eternal life. I promise you will find both surprises and hope in this work. Join us on March 8, 15, 22, 29 and April 5.
Early in March, at a date to be decided, we will hold an evening meeting to present the details of our trip
to the Holy Land in 2018. I know that seems a long way off, but the planning needed is extensive. In outline, I have signed a contract with Pilgrim Tours of PA for a trip leaving on May 22 and returning May 31, 2018. The cost is about $3,000 per person in a shared room, including airfare, hotels, breakfasts and dinners and all entrance fees. We expect to fly from Miami and may hire a coach to take us there. Once in Israel we will visit Caesarea, Megiddo, Nazareth ,Capernaum, the Jordan River (immersion available), the Dead Sea, Masada, Ein Gedi and all of the major sites in Jerusalem, including the Garden Tomb (Eucharist). Transport in Israel will be by air condi-tioned coach and accommodation in 4 star hotels. We have chosen a less strenuous itinerary to accommodate those who have some mobility issues.
We can take a maximum of 45 people, and I hope you will find out more, pray about the trip, and give it
serious consideration. March will be a busy month at All Souls; in addition to the above we will hold a healing conference on
Saturday, March 18th, from 8:30am to 4:30pm. More detailed information will be available shortly, but this is the next planned step in the aim to re-energize the healing ministry at our church. This ministry was a founding prin-cipal on which All Souls began 30 years ago; I think there is no more appropriate time to return to those roots, and no time of greater need for healing in our world. We are blessed to have a number of experienced and dedi-cated healing ministers in our congregation. Let us consciously and deliberately open ourselves to the healing power of God, through the mediation of our Lord Jesus.
I wish you all a Holy Lent, please come and see me if you have questions, want to schedule confession or
would simply like a cup of tea. All are welcome.
In Christ,

SOULFUL MUSIC FOR ALL
As you read this article, Lent will be starting. Some time ago I started looking for liturgical music to set this penitential season apart, but could find nothing with a similar style to unify the service, so, inspired by professor/composer Jason Bahr of FGCU, I decided to write some settings myself. I am entitling it the “Mass for All Souls”. Included are a Sanctus, Memorial Dec-lamation, Great Amen, and Agnus Dei. Many parishes sing the Memorial Acclamation during the Eucharistic prayer and sing the Great Amen at its conclusion. These sung items add another dimension to this im-portant prayer, you will not recognize either a major or minor feel to the music, for the pieces are based on an octatonic scale, based on alternating whole and half step. So you will often hear minor thirds and dimin-ished fifths. The melodies are singable with a few sur-prise notes and interesting harmonies. I hope this new music will enhance and unify our Lenten worship.

MONTHLY OUTREACH MESSAGE
Val and I want to thank everyone who helped make our Motown fund raising dinner and dance on February 10th so successful. What a great evening with great food, and plenty of great music to dance to. And dance we did. Val and I weren’t the only one’s feeling a few aches and pains the morning after. We raised almost $900.00 and it could not have happened without your support. Our heartfelt thanks, and we all had so much fun, that maybe we can do it again next year. It is great to be a part of this “swinging” Church! (lol) John and Val Eaglesfield

THRIFT STORE AND OUTREACH CENTER
The monetary value for the January Wednesday Outreach Program was $4,194. The Food Pantry provided food for 608 families of which 859 were adults,373 were children, and 222 were seniors. There were 772 meals pro-vided and served by Outreach volunteers. As usual I am stressing over this article. I’ve tried to explain what is needed to maintain an in-come of $10,000 to $15,000 a month in terms of donations and volunteers. The first is good quali-ty donations. The second is an army of vol-unteers to process these donations. (They don’t just come in the back and walk out the front on their own!) A couple of months ago when I was moaning and groaning about the Soul Food article (like I’m doing now), one of your church members and a volunteer at your store passed me this note:
The Help – part 2
1. Helping the ecology by keeping things out of the landfill when donated
2. Helping people who are re-locating or down-sizing to dispose of unwanted items
3. Providing shopping opportunities for those on limited incomes
4. Providing funds for our Outreach programs 5. Keeping our volunteers off the streets and out
of bars So if you find yourself walking the streets or spending too much time in the bars, I have it on good authority that the place for you is working as a volunteer at All Souls. Sincerely, Dottie Brown, Mgr

News From Your Parish Nurse
Colds: What’s Good, Bad, and the Not Sure about Cold Remedies!
When you get a cold expect it to last approximately one to two weeks. Hopefully, if you treat the symp-toms early, you may be able to shorten the duration by a day or two. Here are some thoughts.
REST – It helps the body to heal. FLUIDS: Stay hydrated – water, juice, broth, warm lemon water. Avoid alcohol, coffee, and caffeinated sodas. SORE THROAT: Ice chips, lozenges or a salt water gargle- ¼ to ½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, hard candy (not for small children). Children under 6 may not be able to gargle properly. PAIN: Adults may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as directed. Consult a pedia-trician for the correct dosages of Acetaminophen for small children. NUTRITION: Sip warm liquids such as chicken soup, tea, warm apple juice. These may sooth the sore throat, ease congestion and increase mucus flow. Try soups and protein drinks for nutrition. MOISTURE: A cool mist vaporizer or humidifier may help loosen the congestion. Change the water daily and clean the unit frequently. Do not use steam-it has not proven to be effective and may cause burns. OTC (over the counter) MEDICATIONS: For adults and children over 6 years old decongestants, antihis-tamines and pain relievers may offer some symptom relief. Take the medications only as directed. *Do not overuse or misuse medications due to potential harmful side effects. Read the labels on all medica-tions. Some combination medications may cause side effects, such as drowsiness. *Be Cautious with Aspirin in small children and teenagers, it has been linked to Reyes Syndrome - A rare but potentially life threatening condition. List of Ineffective Cold Remedies Antibiotics: These are effective if the illness is caused by bacteria but are ineffective for cold viruses. You will not get better faster if your illness is a virus. The inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to a seri-ous and growing problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria. OTC cold and cough medications in young children. The FDA warns against the use of cold products in children younger than age 6. These medications may cause serious and even life-threatening side ef-fects in some children. Not Sure Category The scientific community is still out on the effectiveness of Vitamin C, Echinacea and Zinc. These do not prevent colds. They may help to shorten the duration of symptoms if taken immediately after the onset of symptoms. They may also be helpful to those individuals who have frequent exposure to infected people such as health care workers, and day care providers. A word of caution about potential side effects when mixed with other medications. Consult your physician or pharmacist with any concerns. Although colds are usually minor in nature, they may still be miserable. Consult your physician if the symptoms persist and you are not improving in a week to ten days. It is tempting to try the latest remedy; the best thing is to take care of yourself. Rest, drink fluids, and keep the air around you moist. Remem-ber to wash your hands frequently. Thank to the Mayo Clinic Health Newsletter for some of this information. Pat Epifanio, RN, MS, FCN
