(Continue from Page 1)

Landing gears operate in a very harsh environment, with temperatures ranging from several hundred

degrees at the brakes to extremely cold ground soak conditions. They also have to cope with very high speed

airflows; rain, ice, dust and debris on the runways, de-icing fluids, etc.; and very high vibration and g levels.

This lecture goes through the design processes involved in defining a new landing gear configuration, with

the A380 development as an example.

Bob Thompson started his career as an apprentice with Hawker Siddeley Aviation at Hatfield in the late

1970s. He worked as a hydro-mechanical systems engineer on Bae 146 flying control development, A300

high lift development and A310 wing structural design.

Bob followed the move of Airbus in the UK from Hatfield to Filton, working on A320 high lift testing and

leading landing gear activities on A330/A340, A400M, A380, A350 and Nimrod.

He is working within the Future Programmes environment as the Landing Gear Architect. He is also quite

heavily involved in driving R&T for both landing gear and wing-related topics.

Updates: Manchester Airshow is cancelled We regret to announce that the Manchester Airshow as part of the RAeS 150th Anniversary Celebration has been cancelled. The Manchester Airshow website recently published the following statement: "Following the tragic accident at Shoreham Airshow in 2015, the Civil Aviation Authority are currently conducting a full review of Airshow regulations. Whilst the organisers of the Manchester Airshow believe that our venue remains suitable for an Airshow Event, safety is out utmost priority, and the potential outcomes of this review may impact upon the feasibility of organising future airshows at City Airport. The team will review any new regulations that are introduced, and once these are understood, a decision will be made as to the possibility of bringing a return of the Manchester Airshow to the skies above City Airport at a later date. Due to the timing of the review, it is with regret that we will be unable to host a full Manchester Airshow in 2016. We would like to thank all our supporters of the Airshow. The Airport will be hosting other events during 2016 and details of these will be published in due course at the Airport website – www.cityairportandheliport.com" As a result, the joint plans of RAeS Manchester, Chester, Preston and Sheffield Branches to host a major 150th RAeS celebration as part of it in July are cancelled at present. The plan included 5 Aircraft cockpits (including a Lightning) Airfix building competition, Art Competition, RC aircraft exhibition and simulator and glider simulator. The joint branches organising team are meeting shortly to look at alternatives.

Lecture Review:

RAF Reaper Operations Lecture on RAF Reaper Operation was held on 2nd December 2015 at University of Manchester. We would like to express our gratitude to Mr Andy Jeffries who shared his stories working with RAF in the Reaper programme. I cannot share too much content as most information is not allowed to be published due to security reason, however I would say I am totally impressed by how the Reaper has helped to complete different missions around the world.
