GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
February 2nd, 2016
You are invited to join us February 2nd for an evening with Captain Dan Keating, the man who wrote the book on
Great Lakes Salmon and Trout fishing!
Captain Dan Keating has been chasing Big Water Salmon and Trout for over 30 years as a charter captain and tournament angler. Passionate about
fishing, he freely shares his wealth of experience with others through highly informative seminars, books and video. He is the author of 4 books, Great
Lakes Salmon & Trout Fishing, Essential Tactics and Seasonal Strategies, Great Lakes Salmon & Trout Fishing, The Complete Troller’s Guide, Keat-
ing on Kings, Great Lakes Chinook Tactics Way Beyond the Basics, and Angling Life. Dan has produced two highly informative DVD’s and his articles
have appeared in over 20 magazine. Dan has built a solid reputation on his ability to find and catch fish when the competition can’t. As an industry
leader, Dan is one of the most productive, innovative and hardest working captains on the Lake. Historically, he has averaged over 17 fish per trip.
Amazon readers describe Dan’s books on salmon fishing as “The Salmon Fisherman’s Bible.” During the offseason, Dan is a highly sought after
speaker, lecturing on fishing and how to get more out of life. Globally, Dan has fished remote locations in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as
extensive experience along the Florida Coast.
Additionally, the awards for 2015 Captain of the Year, Crewman of the Year, River Angler of the Year, and 2015 Big Fish Awards will be
presented at the February meeting!
Be sure to attend the February 2nd MetroWest Steelheaders General Meeting,. It promises to provide some great information for improved catches!

LAKE CHEMUNG ICE FISHING OUTING JANUARY 30th Event Chairman: Mark Platt
I visited Lake Chemung today and took several actual measurements of the ice thickness, 5 and 7 inches's
were the results meaning the tournament is a go. I'll still urge caution since the upcoming weeks temperatures
are not favorable and this is not a Metro West sanctioned event so there is no points involved, just a good time
enjoying the warm temps that Michigan is giving us this year.
Tournament starting time will be 6.50, pull lines at 12 noon. Lunch immedi-
ately following at the boat launch along with the board too to measure your
final catch and tally the winners. I'll be doing a little fishing but be coming
around with the board for the 900 am fish call and or just visiting ya all. 5
bucks gets you lunch and another 5 bucks gets you in to the tourney. Kids
eat free but bring your own drinks. I probably will make some tator salad
and cook some brats. As always (been doing this for about 10 years) will
pay off 4 ta 5 places depending the varieties of fish caught and number of
fisherman and fisherladies and fisherkids. Just let me know if your fishing
and how many by Wednesday at 6 pm.
See you on the ice!

OUTDOORAMA 2016 REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEERS Event Chairman: Mark Platt
Well our second fundraising show of the season ended with a huge round of applause hopefully letting Karen
know she did a fantastic job as did Eric with the first show or The Ultimate Fishing Show. Now its my turn with
Out-Door-Rama coming Thursday, February 25th through Sun, February 28th.
The schedule for the show is in the bottom right. If you will look at this schedule and call, text or e-mail me with times that you want
to work this show, the kids of America will greatly appreciate it. I do
not exaggerate when I say the Kids of America because at this show
we do not make much money after all the operating expenses, but as
a fishin bud (Jeff) says, it's not always about the money.
At this show we have our fishing machine which the kid actually has a
fishing pole in his hand and with the help of a TV and mechanical box
simulates fighting a fish, a big one if wanted. The kids have a riot and
alot of us do too. Just look at the photos of our members helping out!
Bob and Fran are always there and enjoy the hell out of this, John
Lengyel hopefully will be there when his surgery has healed. Clyde
Schoen and Tom Taylor are a few more that take a special interest in
teaching these kids how to fish. I never counted but after watching
these kids for four days, the smiles and laughter coming from them
and there parents makes me feel good too, knowing that I helped
hundreds of kids learn the art and fun of fishing.
Sooo give a little of your time and help us out!

steelheaders TIME TO UPDATE! WANTED! BIG STEELHEAD & KING SALMON FOR DIS-
PLAY MOUNT UPDATES! GET YOUR TROPHY MOUNTED AT NO COST TO
YOU!
The Plan:
Jeff Bustos is heading up the effort to replace the clubs current Steelhead display mount. During the January 2014 Board Meeting Jeff made the pitch
for three new mounts. At the May 2014 Board Meeting funding was approved for Taxidermy and transport cases for one fish. Funding for the remain-
ing two proposed mounts will be reviewed and approved as the process progresses in 2015. A Taxidermist has been selected to provide “skin on”
mounts, for a Winter Male Steel head (Pink/Red Cheeks), a Summer Big Lake Steelhead and a Summer Big Lake King.
If you decide to “Donate” your fish for update of the MWS Show & Outreach Display’s, here is
what you get:
Bragging Rights!!
Your name w/ date caught & weight, will be engraved on a brass tag located on the display
base.
Criteria:
All submittals must be in good condition (No broken backs, prop or lamprey marks…
please).
Winter River Male (Pink/Red Cheeks): Minimum Weight (Close to): 14 Lbs
Summer Big Lake Steelhead: Minimum Weight (Close to): 14 Lbs
Summer Big Lake King: Minimum Weight (Close to): 27 Lbs [Silver phase only]
Note: 1) Selection will be based on a first come first served basis, except where more than one fish may be available. If more than one fish is
submitted, say at a MWS event, then the “Better Looker” will be selected, 2) Minimum Weights: We want a “Big Fish”, but also want a mount
ready for the 2016 shows, so if you get a 12.5# Steely, or a 25# King, send a Pic to Jeff for a ruling (May be accepted).
What to do:
1. Confirm weight of Fish.
2. Take a picture and send it to Jeff Bustos ASAP for a ruling (accept/decline) and so he can get word into the Taxidermist to coordinate pick
up & drop times.
3. Wrap the fish, with fins laying naturally flat in a SOAKED
bath/beach towel. And place into garbage bag with as
much air removed as possible. Keep the fish on ice, or
place into freezer. Most importantly, LAY FLAT when on
ice/freezing.
Field Care Guidelines:
Any questions, call Jeff Bustos at (734) 968-6143, or E-Mail at got-
UPDATE! We have the first considered submission! Lucas Kenbeek has donated a 12.6 lb, 36” Female
Skamania Steelhead! A final decision will not be made until we see what the rest of the year
brings!
So if you catch a nice fish, follow the care instructions above and contact Jeff Bustos imme-
diately!
Sammy Steelhead is being retired!

steelheaders ULTIMATE FISHING SHOW ANOTHER SUCCESS Event Chairman: Eric Braden
A great big THANKS!! To all that were able to make it out to the 2016 UFS.
Re-Cap:
Metro-West had a great show from start to finish. Pre-Show arrangements went smoothly.
We had 58 Volunteers sign up to work the show (A new high). Set up went without a hitch
(well except for nearly setting off the fire alarm due to heating up a rear disk from activating
the E-Brake on the way over from the storage facility J). The team did great meeting new
people and getting the word out for what Metro-West is all about. We have seven new
members and met some really great fisher folks, who I believe we will be seeing many of
them again at near future General Meetings. There were 27 applications for the MUCC
Camp for Kids and
40+ E-Mail friends
signed up. The
Team cleaned a
pond full of fish and
gained $155 in
donations towards
the Kids Camp
fund. Tear down
went really fast
(with only a couple uh, oh’ s), setting a new record for less than
35 minutes (Great job team! J). I hope you had a chance to
meet some new MWS friends and make plans for the upcoming
seasons (I know I have a few follow ups, related to new gear &
techniques J).
Thanks again for everyone’s participation & enthusiasm. The Metro-West Team is truly a great bunch to work with! J
A Couple last comments….
The show season has just started, so keep up the incredibly good work, with support of the upcoming OUTDOORAMA & Novi Boat
shows.
Also, be sure to ask John Lengyel about the new X-“Stream” sport that he had the opportunity to participate in while working the show
last Saturday (….Bobbing for Trout!...) J

steelheaders FLY FISHING IN ARIZONA! By Mark Platt
Short story about Fly Fishing in Arizona - I never did it before and it was kinda on my Christmas list so Allison and my
bride made it come true. For those of you that don't know Allison is my oldest daughter that is living the dream. At the
age of 28 she quit her job and started her own business, sold her condo then bought a RV, spent the summer on the
West Coast and is now wintering in Arizona. She is also your webmaster.
On my Christmas list was trout fishin in Arizona so my Christmas present from Allison was a homemade coupon book which contained
coupons for lodging at her and Erik's RV, breakfast and dinners, numerous 4 wheeling trips in the desert/mountains seeing how she now
has a jeep and a list of some guides in the area who trout fished. Boom the wheels were put in motion and I boarded a plane for Arizona.
Days there were warmish, nights were coldish, the higher we got the colder it was. Allisons place is around 2000 feet so nights were
high 30's low 40's, days were 50 or 60. Now up in the mountain where we fished was a different story, 6500 feet, the day we fished it
was 10 degrees when we started, but it was a warm 10 degrees—ha!
We put on our layers, than waders and boots that Cinda (our guide) supplied, grabbed our rods and
headed down to the river for some lessons. After a short while we got good enough to try the real
thing sooo Cinda put on some flies she had selected, then put Allison at one hole and I at another.
Allison hooked and lost one before I even had my line wet, then lost another while I was still in my
first drift. But then the next two were mine, couple of 18 inch males one making several good runs.
Then Allison had a good one given her a hell of a fight, I scrambled down there and got a video of the
battle. Now she was getting better at this technique because she landed the next 3. The bite was on
for most of the morning, than we broke for lunch since the sun was high in the sky.
Fantastic lunch as Cinda gave a few things to correct and or try. We headed downstream after lunch,
tried some different flies but without too much luck. The day had warmed quickly since there was not
a cloud in the sky but was making the fish wary. We tried the stealth mode as much as possible but
only ended up with about 3 hits apiece and no takers. Allison did get some nice pictures of an eagle
that helped break up casting practice we were getting. What a fantastic day on the river/creek, what a fantastic vacation with my daugh-
ter in a beautiful state. If anybody is heading that way and needs a guide, I'd highly recommend Cinda with Fly Fish Arizona, just look up
her website for all the info. Best part of the story is my daughter beat me landing six fish to my five!!!!

steelheaders FEATURED RECIPE: “CLASSY STEELHEAD” (aka Golden Globes Recipe) Submitted by Dick Hartrick
Probably not something most of us will prepare ... but, I noticed that the celebs attending the Golden Globes Award program
tonight were served "Surf & Turf" as their entree ... the "Surf" being steelhead trout.
Filet of Beef with Marinara Crust and Slow-Roasted Black Garlic Steelhead Trout with Spaghetti
Squash, Fried Capers, Sweet Potatoes
4 ounces steelhead trout
4 ounces beef tenderloin, seared
1 baked sweet potato, cut into rings
2 ounces spaghetti squash, cooked and
seasoned with honey and herbs
6 heirloom cherry tomatoes, sliced in half
1 ounce friend capers
1 pound black garlic (see recipe)
2 ounces red wine sauce
2 ounces marinara crust (see recipe)
2 ounces French green beans
Salt and pepper to taste
2 ounces EVOO
3 ounces butter
2 ounces white wine
Cook the filet of beef in a hot pan using 1 ounce of EVOO and basting with butter until it reaches required temperature. Let
rest, put on crust and keep in a pan. Place steelhead trout on a tray rubbed with butter and add white wine. Cover with plastic
and place in an oven at 250 degrees for 25 minutes. Warm up the cooked squash and season. Make a salad with the cherry
tomatoes and olive oil. Warm up the sweet potato rings and brush with butter. Place the beef under the broiler to toast the
crust. Cook the green beans in a touch of water, a spoonful of butter and salt and pepper. Reduce down until glaze takes the
shine off the trout and brush it with black garlic puree. Spoon a little red wine sauce on top and garnish with fried capers.

MSSFA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CALL TO ACTION! Submitted by: Dennis Eade
Steelheaders:
This may turn out to be our biggest statewide political battle to date. Our coalition (MSSFA, TU, MUCC, MEC, MCBA, Anglers of the
Au Sable) began efforts to provide Senator Jones with sub language to his SB 526 that bans aquaculture on the Great Lakes and con-
necting waterways, which would have preserved existing aquaculture operations with stricter regulations on treating waste and flow
through water. This would have increased the chances of SB526 passing. Then, in planned confederacy, the Senate Republicans,
Booher, Robertson, Shirkey and Casperson and House Republicans introduced bills (SB’s 681, 682 & 683) that virtually rewrite the
“Michigan aquaculture development act” passed in 1996. Reps. Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan) and Triston Cole (R-Mancelona) put forward
an identical package to Booher's in the House with HB 5166, HB 5167 and HB 5168.
These bills are devastating to our lakes, streams and rivers and threaten wild fish and our sport fishery’s ability to co-exist. If you
read the bills (and you should) there are numerous changes that remove regulations and oversight of these operations. The most
egregious are: Shifts rule making power to the Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development and away from DNR and DEQ; circum-
vents the Public Trust Doctrine, interposes a Right to Farm piece; allows up to ten net pens on the Great Lakes; removes the ability of
townships to impose authority over the operations (Right to Farm); riparian rights are impaired, tribal rights via treaty are trampled
on; bottom land use at no charge; and sport fishing license statue being amended so they can collect wild fish and put them in their
aquaculture facilities (Taking of Fish).
MSSFA will keep you posted on developments and we most certainly will provide you with a strategy for contacting your representa-
