PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Our Semester Two focus is on continuous student achievement and students demonstrating learning every day in all their classes. I look forward to leading, learning, and working with all students, staff, parents/guardians, School Council, and community to support excellence in learning in our classrooms and all areas of student school activities. We will continue to focus on excellence with all SCI & School Board Goals. As you read your child's/children's Report Card and other information in this Semester One Final Newsletter 2013, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at SCI. I am looking forward to continued demonstrations of "Success For All". Jane Seymour, Principal ATTENDANCE – THE ROAD TO SUCCESS! One of the strongest factors influencing a student’s success in school is attendance. Therefore, we will continue the late policy with teachers recording lates in the classrooms. Students with five lates will be reported to the VP and will continue to serve a lunch time detention. Semester 2 will see a concerted effort to reduce the number of unexcused absences as well. Our expectation at SCI is that students will attend all scheduled classes unless a reason is provided by a parent/guardian. A phone message can be left 24/7 at 705-428- 2639. Notes to the office are also accepted and should indicate the student’s full name, date, time and reason for absence. If your child is absent and we do not have a reason, you can expect a call from the Office the next day so that we can ensure our records are accurate. If your child has “skipped” a lesson, they can expect an immediate detention. Excessive absences can result in a suspension. Thank you for your support in helping your child be successful at SCI. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teachers or the Vice Principal, Ms. Prairie. TEXTBOOKS Students and parents are reminded that all textbooks are loaned to students for their use and must be returned to the school at the end of each semester. In the event a textbook is lost or damaged, the student will be responsible to pay for its replacement. Students who have outstanding textbooks will not be issued textbooks for their Semester 2 courses until they have returned the books or paid for their loss. BRINGING SCHOOL HOME The Simcoe County District School Board produces this e-bulletin to help parents support children on

their journey of lifelong learning. We know positive connections between home and school support student achievement. In each edition you'll find practical tips and strategies to help your child achieve success in those important years of learning from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Bringing School Home is available through the Simcoe County District School Board website (www.scdsb.on.ca). As well, parents, guardians and other interested members of our school communities may subscribe through our website and have the bulletin e-mailed directly to their e-mail accounts (readers may also unsubscribe at any time).

NOTICE TO STUDENTS AND LEGAL CUSTODIANS OF STUDENTS REGARDING OUT OF AREA REQUESTS

Under the Simcoe County District School Board procedures (APM A7000), it is possible for students to apply for and receive permission to attend an out of attendance area school.

Students will be permitted to continue in attendance as long as space is available. They may be required to return to their home school or transfer to another school when the capacity of the school they are attending has been reached and space is required for students residing within the attendance areas.

Even with this permission, however, the responsibility for transportation to and from school is borne by the out-of-attendance-area student and/or parent/guardian.

GUIDANCE WEBSITE The Guidance Department at SCI is in the process of developing a new website to provide students with the

latest updates regarding important events, college and university information, scholarships and bursaries, community service opportunities, and just about anything else students would need to know. Check it out! Click on Guidance on our website.

IMPORTANT NOTICE RE: OPTION SHEETS Parents and students are reminded about the importance of the course selection process. Students must choose courses where the pathway for post-

secondary is considered as the top priority. Every student must successfully complete 30 credits – 18 required/compulsory and 12 optional courses. As students choose their courses for next year, they must make sure that they meet these requirements.

TRIP OF A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY We are very pleased to announce an exciting international field trip scheduled to occur in October 2013. From Thursday, October 10 to Saturday, October 19, 2013, a group of CCI and SCI stu-dents will have the opportunity to explore London and Paris on an educational tour with Pro-métour. During our tour, we will visit many of the most famous cultural, literary and historical land-

marks of both London and Paris, including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London; the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre.

The benefits of travel for students are extensive and immeasurable. Students from both CCI and SCI travelled to Europe to partici-pate in the D-Day commemoration ceremonies in the spring of 2010. Our students experienced the excitement of travel to significant historical and cultural destinations. They gained confidence and a whole new perspective on the world. You can be sure they all will be talking about their trips for years to come!

The cost of the planned 10-day trip is $3449. This price includes round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, daily breakfast and din-ner, a full-time Prométour Tour Director, entrance fees to attractions, guided sightseeing , RBC Youth Insurance and tips.

If your child has expressed an interest in participating in this exciting opportunity, please contact Ms. Rachel Moritz at 428-2639 or [email protected] for more information.

Stayner Collegiate Institute offers a full range of courses in grades 9 – 12 for every pathway – workplace, apprenticeship, college and university. The school timetable is created in May and June and it is the students’ course selections that determine the courses that we schedule. However, if the total number of students choosing a course is very low, it will not be scheduled. Some courses may be offered every other year. If SCI cancels a course due to low enrolment, students will be offered another available course.

Our Guidance Counsellors, Student Success or Special Education staff will work with you and your child to ensure that they have a full timetable of 8 courses each year. If you have any questions, or you want to discuss your child’s strengths, needs and pathways for post-secondary, please feel free to contact us.

OPTION SHEET SUPPORT FROM GUIDANCE and the NEW COURSE SELECTION FAIR Before students choose their courses for next year,

for the first time ever SCI will be holding a Course Selection Fair to help provide students with the most accurate information about the classes we have to offer. On Febuary 13th, students will have the chance to meet with teachers to talk about courses and ask questions.

Mr. Murray and Mrs. Thompson will be assisting students with their course selections during their period 2 classes from February 19th to February 27th. Students with period 2 spares are asked to set up an appointment through Guidance to complete the option process. Option sheets will be submitted electronically and are due by Wednesday, March 6th, 2013. When selecting courses for next year, students are reminded to check prerequisites carefully and to consider post-secondary pathways to ensure that appropriate choices are made. Students are encouraged to make an appointment with a Guidance Counsellor if they have specific questions or concerns.

myBlueprint.ca is an excellent resource for students and parents to assist with course selections and career planning. Our school’s access code is STAYNER.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES Students are reminded of the various resources and

services available from our many community partners. Our Nurse Practitioner visits SCI on a monthly basis and we now have an Outreach Counsellor from New Path Family Services at the school 3 days a week. Students interested in accessing these services are asked to make an appointment through Guidance. All appointments are confidential.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT Attention Grade Twelve students! APRIL 19, 2013 is the deadline for completion of your 40 hours of

Community Service. Students must submit their completed community service sheet to Guidance as soon as possible, so that this important graduation requirement may be recorded.

Forty hours committed to giving to your community can be easily achieved if you start in Grade 9. Students in Grade 12 are encouraged to complete their service ASAP and hand in the required documentation so that their graduation is not delayed. Deadline for submission is Friday, April 19, 2013.

GRAD PHOTO RETAKES Lifetouch Photographers will be here on March 5 for Grad Photo retakes by appointment only.

Please book your appoint-ment at the office.

FITNESS TAX CREDIT Back in 2007 the Government of Canada introduced a tax credit on eligible amounts of up to $500 paid by parents to register a child in an eligible program of physical activity. Requirements of the program include that the activity is ongoing (minimum of 8 weeks duration with a minimum of 1 session per week), that it is supervised and suitable for children. Substantially all of the activities must include a significant amount of physical activity that contributed to cardio-respiratory endurance plus one or more of: muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, or balance.

The Tax Credit is for a child who is under 16 at any time in the year and must relate to the cost of registration and may include the cost of administration, instruction, and the rental of facilities. (Must not include the cost of food, accommodation, or transportation.)

If you have paid fees to the school for participation in sport activities that would qualify for the credit and you would like to apply, a copy of the form is attached to this newsletter or they are available at the main office. Complete Part A and return to the school for us to complete the form and return to you.

GRAD GOWN RENTALS Each year graduating students have the option to rent a grad gown for Commencement. The rental fee of $25 includes a graduation cap that the student gets to keep. Rental fees must be paid during the week of April

8-12 at lunch in Room 201.

LIBRARY NEWS The SCI Library is very excited to announce that it has received a $1000.00 Speak Up grant this year. The Library Advisory Committee applied to the Ontario

Government for this grant that allows students to implement projects in their schools and give students a "voice". This year the LAC decided to apply for funds so that students could be part of the book buying process for the school libray. Students are encouraged to listen to announcements for further infomation.

The White Pine books are now in the library and ready to be signed out. White Pine books are written by Canadian authors within the last two years. The ten books represent a wide variety of genres and have been

chosen to appeal to teens as recreational reading material. Ask Ms. Moritz or Ms. Jeffrey for more details about this prestigious program.

FRENCH DEPARTMENT Congratulations to all students who achieved success in Grade 9, 11 and 12 courses this past semester! All students are encouraged to push hard at meeting

deadlines on assignments in second semester. Please also seek extra help during lunchtime or after school when in difficulty with new structures or concepts. Touching base with Mr. Arnott while in the midst of a major unit project or the day before an important unit test can make a huge difference in terms of your success.

Students are reminded of the French Department policy on the use of the internet for translation from English to French. We understand and encourage the use of online dictionaries for the translation of individual words. www.wordreference.com , for example, is an excellent online tool. However, like plagiarism, the use of internet translation sites or dictionaries to translate sentences is strictly forbidden without the consent of your teacher. Your French teacher cannot evaluate your skills when outside assistance is used. Do be aware that many of the sites do a very poor job, too. Use your own brain power for maximum honesty and success! Bonne chance ce semestre!!

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION A big welcome back Mr. Creech and Ms. Geier who have both returned to SCI for the second semester. Along with the six classes taking place

in the gym, there will also be an Outdoor Education class and Exercise Science class as well. For the first two weeks, students taking Phys Ed classes will have an opportunity to assess their fitness levels by performing a series of fitness tests, and they will work towards improving those scores when the tests are repeated at the end of the semester. With course selections for next year just around the corner, it’s time for returning students to think about their options. In addition to the courses offered this year, we are really excited to add two new courses to next year’s schedule. Along with the grade ten open course, we will be adding a hockey focus course

open to male and female students of all levels of ability and experience. More details about this course will become available in the next couple of months. At the senior level, we will be adding a personal fitness course which has become very popular at other high schools throughout Ontario. With greater choice for our students, we hope everyone has an opportunity to select a course that they are interested in.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES The Outdoor Activities course is up and running again at SCI. The program is a grade 12 Physical Education course that is open to any senior student

at SCI that wants to spend time outside while enjoying activities that they can continue on with for the rest of their life. The course includes a varied curriculum of theory and instruction about outdoor activities including: hiking,

snowshoeing, mountain biking, tree-top trekking, canoeing, orienteering, camping, first aid, wilderness survival, wildlife identification, and much more. Our first trip is being planned for a ski/snowboarding day at Blue Mountain. If you want more information about this course please see Mr. Creech in Phys-ed.

PEER PRESSURE Friends are important for children and teenagers. However, sometimes those relationships can lead to conflict with parents as they try to adjust the way they relate to their child or teen. Parents can encourage children or

teenagers to have good friends and positive peer relationships by taking an interest in who they spend time with, looking for ways to meet the other parents, showing interest in their child or teenager’s social activities, setting some rules about social activities and helping their child or teenager consider how to make safer choices in social situations.

To find out more, call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and talk to a public health nurse about Triple P or visit the new Triple P Ontario website at www.triplepontario.ca.

There are times when you just can’t brush…. Here are some tips that can help your teeth: Rinse with water after food or sweet drinks. Chew sugarless gum to increase the natural flow of saliva in the mouth. Follow a meal or snack with cheese. For more infor-mation you can call Your Health Connection at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 and speak with a public health nurse or click on the health unit website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS We invite parents/guardians to attend our monthly School Council Meetings the last Monday of every month 7-9pm in our School Library. All parents/guardians are welcome!

Mr. Orton helps students - Kaitlynn (left), Danielle (centre) and Will (right) as they showcase their creativity and focus their artistic talents with Winter Art. There were various creations from snowflakes to painting to ultimate snowmen made of socks and buttons… Students enjoyed the many creations they completed and used various materials and colours to produce beautiful works of art, as they pursued various learning opportunities with the Winter Art sessions.

Christopher, Jamie, Maddie (below), Brittany and Danielle (bottom right) and Ms. Donia, Maddie, Jamie and Christo-pher (right) all are enjoying participating with the SCI Healthy eating Initiative. The students plan, purchase and slice and cut to create many healthy eating choices.
