A Rabbit-Tale By
Pastor Mark Haas

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ!
By the time you receive this month’s Newsletter, an “anniversary” of sorts will have passed
for you and me, January 29, which marks seven years since my installation to be your pas-
tor, and then the next day begins year eight! Eight! That was my basketball uniform number
as a freshman at Concordia College in Oakland…my best year for statistics in basketball as
I led the team in scoring, minutes played and other contributions…pat me on my back!
Anyway, it’s an “anniversary” month, February, for a few reasons!
Thirty-five years ago, February 1978, was the month when Dee and I were blessed with
bringing Melanie home for adoption as our first child…she was baptized 10 days later. We
didn’t know it at the time, but in February 1983, thirty years ago, our youngest child, Mat-
thew was born on Oklahoma…we wouldn’t meet him for nearly 4 ½ years! However, at
around the same time thirty years ago, we made the decision to resign my call as a Lutheran
elementary school principal in order to begin studies at the seminary so that I could become
a pastor. My brother, Craig, will be 60 on February 27, the “anniversary” date we brought
Melanie home, which was four years to the day from when Dee had her first abdominal sur-
gery for an extreme case of endometriosis which led to an eventual hysterectomy. So I
have a lot of memories of February’s past!
So what about February’s present? Well, we have a busy month ahead, if for nothing else,
the church year calendar is upon us! Easter comes earlier this year than the last couple of
years, so Ash Wednesday arrives on February 13. We will be hosting a Dave Anderson con-
cert on February 28. The Regional Outreach Conference, conducted by Lutheran Hour Min-
istries, will be held in Sacramento on February 22-23. I will begin Intentional Interim Min-
istry training by spending a week in Livermore for Phase I (February 4-8). Stephen Minis-
try will begin its twice-a-month Peer Supervision and Continuing Education process, for
which I am still committed along with eleven others. And then, if our application for a DCE
Intern is accepted by Concordia University Chicago, their program director will visit with
us either in late February or March! Indeed, this is a busy month ahead…and don’t forget
Sundays!
So, we’ve taken a brief look at my February’s past and our February present…what about
the future…February a year from now? Your guess is as good as mine! Tomorrow is unsure
for us…we plan, but our plan may not be God’s plan, so we pray for God’s will to be done
among us, based on what we know, and then we live as He permits, guides and produces! A
year from now, our schedule may look familiar to today’s, or we may have moved from the
area for whatever reason, or we may be in a facility where someone else cares for us, or we
may be with loved ones and Jesus in the place He has prepared for us!
3
A year can be a long time as it unfolds or seem short if it’s filled with activity. By faith, we
move ahead knowing as children of God, that we will be loved by Him, regardless of what
lays ahead! I already have the dates for my annual beach house vacation on the Mendocino
Coast in late September, early October but that is still a long time off! There is much to do
in the meantime!
The author of Hebrews tells us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for-
ever.” In my yesterdays, I have loved and lost in death: all of my grandparents; all of Dee’s
and my parents and step-parents, except for my mother; and two aunts as well as a first
cousin. In my today, I have lost Dee and in some ways am losing her family to their retire-
ments and move to a new location that will be more difficult to get to in a Christmas time
vacation. My best friends live even further away. So, very realistically, you are my present
as you have been the past seven years. I am grateful for you as people gifts from God. And
as forever, or for a future, you and I have Jesus and whatever plans He has for us, which ul-
timately are in and with Him. My sister-in-law, Sue, likes to quote to me, “For I know the
plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a fu-
ture and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) That sounds a lot like Hebrews and the assurances of Je-
sus being with us yesterday, today and forever!
The future is uncertain for our world, our nation, our state, our county, our city or town of
residence, our family whether large or small, and our individual lives. Uncertainty rules as
to what happens in this life. Yet, we have hopes and dreams, goals, objectives and plans and
work to fulfill the Lord’s will and calling in our daily being. And at the same time, our fu-
ture is very certain and secure. St. Paul reminds us that “God is for us!” Jesus tells us, en-
courages us in life, with words of “real presence” in the Sacrament, as well as His “real
presence” with us until the “end of the age.”
We live each day in the caring hands and arms of the Good Shepherd. When months and
anniversaries come and go, memories relived and fond thoughts expressed, we can be as-
sured that this Loving Shepherd wants us to experience without a doubt that “surely good-
ness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the
Lord forever!”
May our Lord bless and keep you this day and month in the mighty hands of our Savior!
Yours in Christ’s service,
Pastor Mark Haas, SDG

Just a Reminder for Altar Guild: Remove the candles into the wooden holder and fill each candle with the liquid wax. Light each candle to make sure they are all burning at
the same height. Please do not cut wicks to adjust flame, simply push down or pull up gently. Return the candles to the holders and
make sure they are secure and straight.
Fill three (3) communion trays, four (4) on the Sundays when communion is held in both services. Fill six (6) center cups in each tray with the white grape juice. This amount is subject to change when we grow in membership!!
Keep the filled trays in the refrigerator.
Straighten and fill in the cards as needed and make sure all the pencils are sharp in each pew.
Fill the coffee and water pots. The directions are on the closet door.
All these functions can be done on Friday or Saturday.
On Sunday set out communion prior to service and clean up and put it away after the service.

CONTINUING/COMING IN FEBRUARY 2013…
We currently conduct our worship services at 9 AM (Contemporary)
and 10:30 AM (Traditional). Adult Bible Classes on Sunday are of-
fered at 8 AM and 9:15 AM. Sunday School for nursery/preschool
age children through age 12 is conducted during the contemporary
service, beginning with the Lamb’s Sermon, after which they go to
their classes with their teachers!
TEAM LEADER POSITIONS
We continue to seek out persons to serve as leaders of our Chris-
tian Education, Stewardship and Youth teams. If we are missing
you in the conversation, and you’d like to be a part of these neces-
sary ministry teams, please contact pastor at your earliest conven-
ience.
REVITALIZATION
We continue to receive donations to the “Revitalization Fund” established to raise
monies to offset the expenses of calling a DCE/Family Life Minister-Intern, to us
this summer 2013. A ministry description and application has been submitted to
Concordia University Chicago! You may recall that our stewardship program 2011
involved these items…Financial Growth by Three Means: (1) Commitment to tith-
ing, (2) Increased contribution in 2013, and (3) Specific pledge to the Revitalization
fund.
COOKS FOR THE HOMELESS
Ida Brady has a friend, Dee Hook, who helps prepare lunches for distribution to
the homeless camps around town, as identified by Mike Parr with Mercy Rescue
Way Mission. If you would like to assist in the meal preparation, contact Ida or
contact Dee directly at 916-941-9541 or via email … [email protected].
MUSICIANS/SINGERS
“By His Grace,” our contemporary service worship leaders are
seeking out more instrumentalists and singers to accent their
ministry. They would dearly love to have an every-Sunday key-
boardist…thanks Denise for your efforts at Advent/Christmas!
In the meantime, Bill and Jenny on guitar, sometimes Dick on
guitar or harmonica, and occasionally Doug on bass are the core
along with Clydene, Jenny and Bill as vocalists! Know someone, maybe you, who
could join along? Let Bill Rosenberry or pastor know!

MISCELLANEOUS
“Little Back Packs” for Schnell School, 21, will be filled
again in mid-February…donations of nutritional snacks
and drinks are very much appreciated!
LENT 2013
Ash Wednesday will be observed on February 13, 2013
with a service, including the Imposition of Ashes, at
noon and at 7 PM. There will be a soup supper at 6 PM.
Please sign up for soups, bread or dessert on the sign-up chart in the Nar-
thex. This will be the only soup supper or mid-week Lenten service until
Holy Week when we observe Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and then
Easter. In the meantime, we encourage you to attend the Wednesday evening
Bible study lead by Rich Yanick in the Fireside Room, plan on attending the
Dave Anderson Concert on February 28, and we encourage you to partici-
pate in the weekly collection of toiletries for Lutheran World Relief! Addi-
tionally, please consider attending the “Regional Outreach Conference” con-
ducted by Lutheran Hour Ministries on February 22-23 in Sacramento!
Stephen Ministry
On Sunday, January 27, we celebrated, as a congregation, the
commissioning of nine Stephen Ministers. These wonderful,
committed people are now ready and eager to begin their car-
ing ministry. Your help is needed to help identify and lead
those who are in need to take advantage of this Christian
care. It may be someone who is simply feeling alone and
needs a caring person to listen. If you know of someone who
might benefit from this ministry, explore with them the possibility of having a
Stephen Minister, and then either contact Pastor or Judy Bryld, or obtain a
“Referral Form” from the office, fill it out and return it to Pastor or to the office in
an envelope marked “confidential”. Likewise if you feel that you, yourself, might
benefit from this care, we encourage you to either contact Pastor or Judy Bryld,
or, again, to obtain a “Referral Form” from the office and return it to either Pastor
or to the church office in an envelope marked “confidential”. Remember that
your referral is kept absolutely confidential. Upon receipt of the referral the
Stephen Ministry leaders will make contact with the potential care receiver, ex-
plain the Stephen Ministry, answer any questions and determine if this is the right
program for them. May God bless you for your help.

If you are shopping at Raley’s and you haven’t registered your new number yet
then we are not getting scrip money from your purchases!
Don’t give up on us!!! The scrip money has helped us to have the best Sunday School
program ever and we received most of our scrip money from Raley’s!
Many are still having trouble signing up for the Raley’s card so here are STEP BY STEP IN-
STRUCTIONS:
1. First you go to somethingextra.com and register your new card by inputting your email address and a
password. It then brings up all your information.
2. Then you need to go to ‘manage your accounts’ it is located under the box where you sign in, just click
on it.
3. Then click on “Extra credit” which is also located in the yellow box to the right, in blue letters.
4. You will see a box in the middle of the screen that says YOUR ORGANIZATIONS – click on the green bar
that says “Change your selections”
5. To the left there is a box that says “Search Organizations” in the box above it input First Lutheran and hit
the enter key.
6. You will see “First Lutheran Church Child Development Center” – they haven’t changed it to say Sunday
school but this is the one.
7. Select First Lutheran then in the box that say MANAGE YOUR ORGANIZATIONS – use the drop down and
select 100. That means 100% of your purchase points will go to us!
If you still can’t do it then please write your name, email and the number from the back of
the card on the paper that will be on the donut table each Sunday and I’ll do it for you! Or
you can email that information to the church office. We wont get any money for any of your
purchases unless this step is completed so please get your new card and register so the money can continue
coming for our Sunday School program.
The Sunday school staff and children thank you!
