Worthy Officers and Brothers All:

As we enter the second month of the year,

I am charged with the responsibility of

issuing the Form 100s for suspension of our

Brother Knights who have failed to pay their

Council dues. Unfortunately, we have quite a few of our own who still have outstanding

debts to the Council. If you know any of

these Brothers personally, please make a

contact and help save their membership

status.

We will hold our first First Degree

Exemplification Ceremony on Thursday,

February 6th at 6:30 PM. We will welcome 5

new Brothers into the Council and hope that

you will all join us for that event. Members of the Team should be reviewing their parts and

strive for complete memorization!! How we

perform is vital to the new brothers and their

first impressions of the Knights of

Columbus.

I have served as the Council's Financial

Secretary for the past three years. My term is

quickly coming to an end and I have truly

enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities of

this position. I have not yet decided whether to seek another term of office from our

Supreme Knight, however, I do want to

graciously thank all of you for your support

during my tenure in this position.

On a personal note, Friday, February 1st

was my 40th birthday. The problem with

milestone birthdays is that they are both

wonderful and scary. My students were

making fun of me in class the other day for

turning 40 and my response to them was,

“Well, it sure beats NOT turning 40!” This is

a sentiment, I am sure, that you can all relate

to on your milestone birthdays too! It was a

great day and I am looking forward to the next 40 and beyond!

We have some very big events coming up,

including the 7th Annual Charity Golf

Classic. If you are looking for ways to get

involved, now is a great time! Also, recruit a

new member! That's something you can do

virtually any day you choose. We are always

looking for good Catholic men to join with us

in support of Holy Mother Church.

May God bless and keep you all.Vivat Jesus!

Dear Brother Knights

There are many good things about being a pro-life coordinator. Chief among them is the focus you develop for seeing and hearing about pro-life initiatives, articles, etc. I pick up things that I would not have before and people

send me things that inform me more than I could have imagined. Along these lines I’d like to call your attention to a few things that happened this month of January dealing

with pro-life. First, our Council Past Grand Knight Peter Capece

and our current Assembly Faithful Navigator Robert

Britten made the Jan. 19th Prolife march in St. Augustine, along with thousands of others. Note the picture they sent back. The signs say it all!

Second, I received and email from SK Peter Connelly

suggesting a great homily to me. Well you guys need to check out this Deacon Greg Kandra of the Diocese of Brooklyn, NY. His homily on Jan 20, 2013 addressing the

day after the passing of Roe vs. Wade was truly enlightening and moving. His words can be viewed through the webs i te www.patheos.com/blogs/

deaconsbench. I quote one part of his homily that really hit home “For the sake of our city, for the sake of our nation,

for the sake of generations yet unborn, those that do not have a voice, those that may never have a voice, we cannot be silent. We cannot be quiet.” He talked a lot about what has changed since Roe vs. Wade passed 40 years ago and

the thing that hit me is that there have been some 55million abortions since this ruling. In NYC, he states, that 40% of all pregnancies end in abortion and for minorities the rate

is as high as 60 %. Reading this I realized that those that were first

aborted would now be near 40. They missed growing up,

going to school, having a sweetheart, getting married and having their own children. What did our nation miss? What educators, doctors, writers, priests, religious, nurses, inventors, engineers, painters, mechanics, farmers, mom’s,

dad’s, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles.Lastly, I read the Orlando Sentinel and on Jan 26,

2013 columnist Darryl E. Owens wrote a great article

“Abortion takes a toll among blacks.” A passage really struck home-“Every year, some 7,000 blacks are murdered on the streets- Occasionally, one hears a whispered SOS.

Every day, meanwhile, nearly 1,000 unborn black babies are terminated in an abortionists shop. About that, hardly a peep.” He calls for God-fearing folks to get serious and address change; he calls for the churches to speak out. He

calls for the NAACP to take a leadership role. Mr. Owens closure is what struck me and I leave it with you-“Fifty-five million. And, counting…toward the next milestone.” God

Bless! Peter Stauder

I plan on showing a short video titled “the Life and legacy of Father McGivney” at the upcoming meeting, and decided to give a brief synopsis of its contents. Father Michael McGivney was born in Waterbury Ct. on August 12, 1852. His parents Patrick and Mary Lynch were originally from Ireland, and arrived during the great 19th century wave of Irish immigration. Father McGivney was ordained to the Priesthood on December 22, 1877 in Baltimore, at the historic Cathedral of the Assumption by the future Cardinal James Gibbons. He began his priestly ministry on Christmas day in 1877 as Curator of St. Maryʼs Church in New Haven. In 1881, Father McGivney began to explore the idea of a Catholic, fraternal benefit society. During an era in which fraternal societies had popular appeal, he felt that there should be some way to strengthen religious faith; while at the same time providing for the financial needs of families after the unexpected loss of the breadwinner. Father McGivney first discussed his concept with Bishop Lawrence McMahon of Hartford, and gained his approval. He then met with other priests of his diocese, and traveled to places like Boston and Brooklyn, seeking information wherever he could to help the Catholic Laymen organize into a benefit society. Father McGivney had originally suggested Sons of Columbus as a name for the Order. The word “Knights” replaced “Sons” because many of the original 24 members were Civil War veterans; and felt the name Knights would help to apply a more noble title. The first public reference to the Order was published on February 8, 1882 in the New Haven Morning Journal and Courier. The first meeting was held the night before. On March 29, the Connecticut legislature granted a charter to the Knights of Columbus, formally establishing it as a legal corporation. Never robust in health, Father McGivney was stricken with a serious case of Pneumonia, and eventually succumbed to his illness on August 14, 1890. His Christian inspiration and leadership brought him the loyalty and affection of those who knew him as the founder of the Knights of Columbus.Mike Ogden - Lecturer

Supreme and State Council News

New Knights Poll Shows National

Consensus on Abortion

As the pro-life community prepares to

observe the 40th anniversary of the landmark

Roe v. Wade decision with the March for Life in

Washington and numerous other walks and

events throughout the country, a new Knights of

Columbus/Marist Poll survey gives them reason

to hope. The survey, which has been conducted

five times in the past five years found that 83

percent of Americans favor significant

restrictions on abortion.

This overwhelming consensus stands in sharp

contrast to the bitterly divisive pro-life/pro-

choice surveys popularized by typical polling

questions which show that Americans are split

nearly 50-50 on the pro-life or pro-choice

question. But the Knights’ survey digs deeper,

removing the labels of pro-choice and pro-life

and focusing instead on the heart of the matter:

when abortion should and should not be legal.

The survey gives respondents six options: always,

first six months, first trimester only, only in cases

of rape, incest and life of the mother, only in

cases of life of the mother, and never.

“For years polls have found that Americans

divide on labeling themselves as pro-life or pro-

choice,” said Lee Miringoff of The Marist Poll.

“By asking more detailed questions about their

specific views on abortion, we have been able to

go beyond those labels to get a more complete

picture of what Americans actually think about

this issue.”

The results speak for themselves.

Abortion is not the only issue where there is a

consensus hiding behind politically-charged

labels. Across a wide spectrum of issues,

Americans form a clear and decisive majority

despite the protestations to the contrary from

politicians and the media.  The issue is explored

in depth in Supreme Knight Carl Anderson’s

latest book, Beyond a House Divided: The Moral

Consensus Ignored by Washington, Wall Street

and the Media.

Our next Pasta Dinner is in April. Luca Delverme will again be in control of the kitchen and Ed Zarek will be handling the tickets. All we need is a “Coordinator” to keep things on track. The two most stressful jobs are in hand. If you wan t t o t ake up t he coordinator’s job, please contact our Grand Knight Jim Laria at 352 243 3292, [email protected] .

Ask eligible men to joinToday, I want to address the growth of the

Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps

this great fraternal engine running. All of our

charitable works in the council, state, national and

international level are thanks to our hard-working

members.

We also recognize that the membership blitz is

a tried and true way for councils to increase their

numbers. We see these pushes often in March, in

celebration of Founder’s Day, and again in

October. These drives are successful because

brother Knights are more visible than normal,

during and after Masses and at special events. We

must remember to ask each and every Catholic

gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the

Church, the community and the Order.

During the rest of the year, we often “forget”

to ask men to join our ranks and bring their

families into the Knights of Columbus family. You

probably know an eligible Catholic man you could

ask today. Chances are that the only reason he

hasn’t joined already is because no one asked him.

When telling a prospect about the strengths of

the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal

benefit: our insurance program. This is often an

interesting “selling point” to a potential member

who is on the fence. Many members come into the

Knighthood simply to be able to buy coverage for

their family. Soon after, they realize the good our

charitable works do for their community and they

are proud to be members.

As your professional Knights of Columbus

insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow

in fraternity in any way that I can.

The CommunicatorRobert BrittenFrom the Faithful Navigator

Worthy Brother S i r

Knights Well we are on our way to

another busy time for our assembly we had a busy January. I would like to thank the Brother Sir Knights who

stood Guard at the  wake of sir knight  Herman Braun who passed away in January he will be missed by

both the council and the assembly. Herman was a knight for 62 years and believed in what we do and why

we do it. I would also like to thank the guys who came out for his funeral it meant a great deal to his family .

Myself and my wife and past

Grand Knight Pete Capece and his wife Phyllis made the trip up to St Augustine for the Pro Life March. I

was very touched by all the things going on. The Knights were there in full force. I was most touched by the

number of young people that took part in the march It just makes our stand even more important than ever before. If the young people believe

in it then our stance is right we need to reinforce our beliefs.

The assembly put in another

good showing at the Shrine this past weekend we had 8 Sir Knights  in regalia for the mass with Bishop

Noonan, a good showing for our group.

We have a lot of things coming up the next few months so please

remember your sword and baldric for our meeting. Our commander will be going over the procedures for the confirmation at our February

Meeting. I really hope the younger Guys in the assembly especially our newly knighted sir knights start to

get regalia The old guard is getting older and needs to slow down a bit so my hope is that the new younger guys

can take up some of the things on the outside and let the older guys do the things around the church and local things.

The Chances on the North Carolina raffle are here they are  5 dollars a ticket they get $2.50 we

keep $2.50 this is our only fund raiser for the year. Those that can, please take at least 5 chances we need the

revenue to keep us afloat. May the good lord bless and

keep us all . Vivat Jesus, Bob
