Don’t Let Low Rates Sink Your Retirement PlansBROUGHT TO YOU BY EDWARD JONES

Over the past few years, if you’ve taken out a mortgage or another consumer loan, you’ve probably welcomed the low interest rates you may have received. But as an investor, if you’ve kept

any retirement savings in fixed-rate investment vehicles, you may have seen low rates in a less favorable light. And that’s why it may be time for you take a closer look at your financial strategy for working toward the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned.

Of course, you can always hope that interest rates will rise, and perhaps they will. As you may know, the Federal Reserve has kept interest rates at record lows in recent years to stimulate lending and thereby boost the economy. But rates can’t get much lower, and if inflation were to heat up, the Fed could reverse course by starting to raise rates.However, if you’re going to do a good job of building financial assets for retirement, you really can’t afford to play “wait-and-see” with interest rates. Instead, consider the following moves:

Rebalance your portfolio. No matter what your situation, it’s a good idea to periodically rebalance your investment portfolio to help ensure it still reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. If you’re concerned about low rates harming your future investment income, you have more reason than ever to review your portfolio and make adjustments as needed, relative to your objectives. For example, if it seems that your portfolio has become “over weighted” in any one vehicle, you may need to change your investment mix, keeping in mind your individual risk tolerance.

Redefine “retirement.” Retiring from one career doesn’t have to mean retiring from work altogether. If you decide to work part time, do some consulting or even open your own small business, you may be able to earn enough income to take some of the “pressure” off your investment portfolio in terms of providing you with the money you need to live on during retirement. Also, by working during your nominal retirement years, you may be able to delay taking Social Security until you’re a little older, when your monthly checks can be larger. Review your withdrawal strategy. During your retirement, the amount you choose to withdraw from your investments each year will depend on several factors, including the size of your portfolio and the amount of income it is providing. As

you chart your retirement strategy, you’ll need to factor in a realistic withdrawal rate.

Re-examine sources of investment income. You may want part of your retirement income to come from investments that offer protection of principal. If so, you don’t have to settle for the lowest-rate vehicles. By looking at the various alternatives and blending them with your overall portfolio, you may be able to boost your income without significantly increasing your investment risk.

In short, just because interest rates are low, you don’t have to lower your retirement expectations — as long as you plan ahead and explore your options.

Sarah Beck is a four sport athlete. She plays basketball, soccer, volleyball and track. She is also on the student council. Her favorite season is summer because she can do her two favorite things which are to jet ski and swim. She loves the warm weather. Sarah has two favorite teachers Mr. Ansley & Mr. Dinning. In her free time, she likes to hang out with friends and Tres.

Badger’s Tab McLaughlinHIGH SCHOOL NAMES THE NEW FOOTBALL COACH

A new era has begun for the Bonners Ferry Football program! Casey McLaughlin has been named head football coach; the school’s fourth head coach in the past three years. McLaughlin has been coaching in

Sandpoint the past six years where he spent the last three as varsity defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. McLaughlin was a part of a program that lead teams to a 91% winning percentage versus 4A schools over the past six years, 4 league championships and a state championship appearance.

“I am excited to be a Badger and to be part of this community.” McLaughlin went on to say, “ I am not in Sandpoint any longer, I am in Bonners and I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity than the one I have here.”

After a tumultuous 3-6 season McLaughlin is ready for the challenge, “I only see positives here, I don’t view this as challenging, but rather as an opportunity to establish a program in a great community.”

“We’re extremely excited to have someone with Casey’s integrity, work ethic, experience and energy,” Bonners Ferry athletic director Kris Knowles said.

McLaughlin went on to say, “there is a lot do and I am not wasting any time. There are great athletes here and they have been coached well. I will start the process of building my coaching staff soon and we will get after it.”

When asked what is the one thing he would like the community to know about him, McLaughlin answered, “For the past ten years I have been coaching football. Now that I have had the opportunity to be under some great head coaches, I feel I am ready to be the head coach! My desire is to build a culture where players and coaches are challenged to maximize their potential both on and off the field. My goal as a coach and as an educator is to ignite a passion for life in those I am around. We are all capable of amazing things if we would be willing to dare greatly and to never settle for being average.”

Tips for Your Skin & BodyFEEL HEALTHY AND BEAUTIFUL1. Start off with fruit, low carbohydrate, high protein for

breakfast or brunch. Fruit is the natural candy of the world.

2. Eat a light lunch so your body doesn’t waste energy to digest. This will give you more sustained energy for your days work.

3. Don’t eat dinner too late because you won’t fall into the deep sleep you need when your body is busy digesting food.

4. Keep your heart rate up for 35-45 minutes every other day because cardiovascular exercise is the most important form of exercise.

5. Get involved, go to you local gym or classes like Pilates or Zumba. It’s a great way to socialize.

6. Try green tea instead of coffee for your morning jolt. Served hot or cold with plenty of antioxidants.

7. Instead of cucumbers on your eyes for dark circles, try potatoe slices that contain an enzyme called catecholase, which is a skin lightener.

8. Stay hydrated through the night and keep a glass of water next to you so your body doesn’t need to fully wake up to get a drink.

9. Using primer on your face works just like paint primer, shielding your skin from your makeup and preventing acne.

10. Try to stay away from microwave dinners and processed foods. “You are what you eat!”. Don’t be a cardboard box supper.

11. Quit smoking. You are paying for cancer and health problems.

12. Don’t wait too long in-between meals. Your body goes into starvation mode, storing fat. Eat every 4 hours. If you are short of time, snack on fruit.

Safe Exercising for SeniorsLEARN HOW TO EXERCISE SAFELY

SENIOR FOCUS

Many seniors find themselves wanting to exercise more often and might even think about joining a gym but are worried that their bodies just won’t be able to take the exertion. While your

body is definitely not the same as it was when you were 20, research has shown that a regular exercise program is extremely beneficial. Studies conducted have concluded that the physical decline we normally associate with aging may not have to do with aging at all, but a lack of physical activity that usually happens when people get older. But it’s not too late! Developing a safe exercise program brings you closer to a healthier, active lifestyle, which is extremely important. Here are some tips for exercising safely to optimize your results and reduce the risk of injury. Know Your Limits It’s very important that you know your body. Being able to tell the difference between a good level of exercise and when you are pushing yourself too hard is absolutely crucial to your well-being. Talk to your doctor about your wish to exercise more frequently. If you know what you shouldn’t do and specific warning signs, you will be able to keep your exercising as safe as possible and know when to slow down before your body suffers any serious harm.

Strength Training – Free Weights and Resistance Bands Using free weights and resistance bands are a great, safe way to combat muscle loss that can be so prevalent with age. For some seniors, these are often a much better workout choice than using weights machines.

Cardio Exercise Come up with a plan for how you will attack each cardio session. A few times a week do short, intense exercise and on alternate days do longer, less intense exercise. Machines like ellipticals and stationary bikes are

ideal as they are much easier on your joints than treadmills. Utilize Personal Trainers When you are first beginning to exercise, schedule a few sessions with a personal trainer. Make sure you share with them any important information or advice that your doctor gave you and together you can begin to develop a program that is safe, but effective. Exercising is essential to staying healthy, fit, and slowing the effects of aging. Talk to a friend and join a gym as exercise buddies. Having a support system in place is key to your success! And, perhaps most important of all, remember to have fun! Any safe exercise is good exercise so don’t stop gardening, taking walks with your spouse around your neighborhood, or chasing after your grandchildren! February 17 through 26 - Sandpoint Winter Carnival. Every year in the dead of winter, Sandpoint cooks up a sure antidote to cabin fever. Pure fun celebrating the best of the snowy season…indoors and out. Go to sandpointwintercarnival.com to get a full list of events.

February 21 & March 6, 12 - Winter Goldsprints. Come watch these exciting bike races on rollers with the forks fixed. Two riders will battle it out head-to-head for 500 meters with speeds in excess of 60 mph in front of a cheering crowd. Races are at Laughing Dog Brewing in Ponderay at 6pm. greasyfingersbikes.com. February 2, 24, 25 and March 1, 2, 3 - Walk-A-Mile. Musical Theater with Dinner. Walk A Mile is centered around both serious and comic reflections on life’s journey from birth to death and beyond. Dinner starts at 6pm with the performance starting at 7pm. Tickets are $20 for dinner theater or $10 for the show only. The Pearl Café will be serving meat or vegetarian lasagna, garlic bread, caesar salad and desert.

February 24, 25 - Outrageous Air Show. Olympic skiers join local talent in a Big Air Show for a spectacular evening of entertainment on Schweitzer Mountain. Crazy themed parties follow in Taps.

February 28 through March 2 - Buck Chuck Night. The last Tuesday of every month, area performers gather at The Pearl Theater for an evening of sharing music, theater, comedy, dance, etc. All performers are welcome. Entrance is free to performers and $5 for non-performers. Doors open at 6pm when you can enjoy hot pizza, sodas, coffee, wine, beer and for dessert, giant chocolate chip cookies.

Show begins at 7pm.

March 2, 3, 4 - Gun and Horn Show. The Sandpoint Fairgrounds is hosting the annual Bonner County Gun & Horn Show, Friday from 12pm-6pm,

Saturday 9am-6pm, and Sunday from 9am-3pm. A weekend pass can be purchased for $10 or entry fee per person is $4, kids 11 and under get in free.

March 3 - Penguin Plunge. TAKE THE PLUNGE For Special Olympics Idaho. The Penguin Plunge is a unique opportunity for individuals, organizations and businesses to support Special Olympics Idaho athletes by gathering pledges and plunging into icy cold water!

Registration begins at 10am at the Deep Creek Boat Launch on the Kootenai River. Come take the plunge at noon. 208.267.6280.March 6 - Boundary County Republican Caucus. Bonners Ferry High School doors open at 5pm with voting beginning at 6pm. Registered Boundary County voters must have declared Republican party affiliation to be eligible to vote.

March 10 - Educational Seminars. Carter Country Presents the 2nd in a three part series with Dr. Bob Stoll, DVM. This month’s seminar will be discussing felines. Meeting will be held at the Panhandle Health Building at 322 Marion Street in Sandpoint at 2pm.

March 11 - Grom Stomp. Presented by Oakley, this freestyle event is for skiers and boarders ages 6 - 11. Schweitzer will create a “grom sized” slopestyle and ridercross course specially designed for this event.

March 16 - Backcountry Film Festival. Enjoy an evening of outdoor films highlighting the beauty and fun of the winter backcountry experience at the Pearl Theater. Door prizes, raffle and a no host bar will be provided. The Café will be serving its signature “bottomless bowl of soup.” Doors open at 6pm with the films starting at 7pm. March 16, 17, 18 - Stomp Games. Presented by Smith Optics, this is the Northwest’s premiere ski and snowboard freeride competition. Featuring Ridercross and Slopestyle competitions!

SHERLOCK AND WATSONSherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were going camping. They pitched their tent under the stars and went to sleep.
