Reading I: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Reading II: Romans 10:8-13 Gospel: Luke 4:1-13 Scripture Focus We live in a world of desires. Advertising directs our desires to fame, wealth, and power. Has much changed since the time of Jesus? In today’s reading, Jesus is tempted by the same desires that many, perhaps even we ourselves, are struggling with. If fame, wealth, and power are not your desires, what are the desires you struggle with? As you struggle to achieve them, are your hearts full or does the emptiness remain, driving you on to find fulfillment? Jesus made a pivotal decision in this reading. He decided that only God could and would complete him. He turned his heart, his mind, his whole- being to God and in doing so set himself against the powers that ruled. At this moment, Jesus started his journey to the Cross. Jesus decided to let go. He stepped into the unknown and in stepping into the unknown, he allowed God to take over and direct his life. In Bonaventure’s view the cross symbolizes God’s love for us and this love is the light of God through the dark paths of life. “The path to the fullness of love passes through suffering and death because it requires a letting go.” (Franciscan Prayer. Ilia Delio) On the other side of the letting go, however, is the raising up to new life. Suffering is the place where we meet a God of humble love. Bonaventure reminds us that the cross is not about sin and judgement, but about the personal love of God. Life Focus Francis kindled his love for God by constantly striving to overcome obstacles in his life that prevented him from growing in a relationship with God. Reading I: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Reading II: Romans 10:8-13 Gospel: Luke 4:1-13

Scripture Focus

We live in a world of desires. He turned his heart, his mind, his whole-being to God and in doing so set himself against the powers that ruled.

First Sunday of Lent

WELL DONE!!! To: Louis Cavallin and members of the parish Knights of Columbus for the Pancake

Breakfast Fundraise for Sudbury Project Hope. $1,198.00 was raised to help support two refugee families soon coming to Sudbury.

Sunday Collection Report: Received February 7th, 2016:

►$3,646.10 from 192 envelopes ►$326.90 from loose change ►Total: $3973.00

Pre-Authorized Debit Plan Report – received January 2016: $3, 195.00

Your regular offerings help pay the bills to keep the parish alive!

THE COST OF SNOW! One item, over which we have no control, is snow ploughing of the parking lots. Your

generosity meets this expense of last week : $1,155.99

No, we did not confuse the season; we are LOOKING FOR A POOL! As you know, 6

children will be baptized at our Parish at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 26th. These Catechumens have chosen to be immersed into the water just as Jesus was into the River Jordan. We are currently looking for a pool to accommodate this event. If you have a small (about 3 feet tall, no more than 8 feet in diameter) portable pool that you can lend us, please call the parish office at 705-522-3900.

CWL News: The CWL general meeting will be Wednesday February 24th instead of February 17th

due to Ash Wednesday, Family Day, Valentine’s Day and hall availability. Your attendance is important. We are voting and need a quorum. Hope to see you there. For God and Canada.

PRAYER CHAIN Since Dec. 23, 2015 to Feb. 2, 2016 – 14 requests for prayer support for such issues as:

serious illness for children and adults, lost documents, marriage troubles. To ask for prayers: call 705-522-8789.

Our Lady of Hope Church is in need of a secretary to work 5 days a week, 7 hours day for

the months of September to June, and 3 days a week for July and August. Main responsibilities include

bulletin production, book-keeping, Mass Intention management and clerical duties. Training will be

provided. Computer skills a must. Employment is based on one year contract. For further details and a

detailed job description, please contact the office at 705-673-1774. Three references and a police check are required.

REVIEW: Children preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation attended an Activity Day

this Saturday morning in our Parish. The children reflected upon the Sacrament of Peace, what it

means to be truly sorry, penance as our “yes” to God, and God’s never-ending love and

forgiveness. Please keep our children and their families in your prayers.

FIRST RECONCILIATION (“Confession”): Tues. Feb. 16th, 7 pm – 30 children & families

will gather to be welcomed for the first time to another way of knowing God’s merciful forgiveness. Many

thanks to Loretta DiGioseffo for guiding all on this journey. Also, young people preparing for Confirmation

(May 25) will come to celebrate that Sacrament with them too. Brenda Cavallin is their co-ordinator and

guide. Please pray for these young people, their families and their continued commitment to our faith.

PENITENTIAL RITE: On Tuesday, February 16, at 7:00pm, our fabulous six young Catechumens will

participate in the Penitential Rite. Although they are still learning how to ask God to help them change the

things in their lives that they are sorry about and, therefore, will not be making their First Reconciliation,

our Catechumens will come to church to accept God’s forgiveness and the strength to live a life which is

pleasing to God. Please support them in your prayers

February, 21st. It’s a great way to observe the Year of Faith this Lent. The sessions will take place in the Parish Upper Hall.
