2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

ANNUAL WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY – JANUARY 18TH-25

The week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated around the world on January 18th – 25th, which are also the dates recommended by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. However, there has been a long-standing practice by a number of communities to celebrate the Week of Prayer on optional dates, in order to include two Sunday which in 2018 would be January 21st-28th.

This universal week of prayer encourages Christians of all denominations to meet, to participate in various liturgical and other community activities, and to pray together that all may be one, as Christ desires. The importance of unity among Christians and the responsibility of the people of each parish to work for this unity should be emphasized throughout the week. Dear Fr. Jim and all of you at St. Patrick, My trip home was safe though long. I also thank God and all of you for my stay which reenergized me bodily and morally. Thank you for your continuous generosity and all that you share with me for the people of God here in Benin. Many duties were waiting for me thus, I am just back from a week of pastoral visits in the remote villages where a bigger part of our Christian community is living in a real poverty. Most of the populations are without running or drinking water, have no health centers, no schools for the children, and there is no public assistance from the government for most of them. The roads to reach them are very bad. I was really touched by their life conditions, but I was impressed by the vibrant expression of their faith, their joyful way to welcome me and give whatever they can even though they are very poor. They are brave and joyous in their communities. I am sure that with your continuous help, we can do something to help them not only grow in faith but give them a better quality of life. I will prepare some photos of what I have done so far and send them to you soon. Thanks so much and may God reward you a hundred fold. Warm regards to all. Let us keep the fervor of faith and the missionary ardor, and let the Spirit of Jesus fill our lives with abundant divine graces for the service of the Church in Africa and everywhere. † François G.
