Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, proph- ets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in today’s readings, there is no ex- plicit directive for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to fol- low Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respec- tive calls result from the recognition of God’s presence in the experience. That recognition creates an openness to whatever God might want. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self‑giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

EXCERPT FROM BISHOP ZUBIK’S PRESS RELEASE (01/18/19): In light of inclement weather , Bishop Zubik encourages the Catholic faithful not to risk their safety trying to attend Mass. “The faithful are free to make prudent decision to remain home during inclement weather and not venture outside this weekend, especially for their safety and the safety of others.” The Catholic faithful because of a variety of legitimate circumstances - including sickness, poor health and inclement weather - can and do excuse themselves from the obligation to attend Mass without offending God or incurring any serious sin. Sunday remains the Lord’s Day even when the faithful cannot attend Mass. As such, the faithful are encouraged to view the Mass on television or the internet (available at christianasociatestv.org), if possible. Also reading the Word of God, especially the biblical readings for Sunday (available at usccb.org), praying the Holy Rosary, and/or making use of other devotional prayers could take place in the home to keep in a fitting way the Lord’s Day. CHOOSING SIDES My great concern is not whether God is on our side; my great concern is to be on God’s side. —Abraham Lincoln

SOFTBALL & TENNIS PLAYERS WANTED, CO-ED: SINGLES, 21 AND OVER. Softball is played in Blawnox, Tennis at Moore Park in Brookline. PUT OUT INTO DEEP WATER AND LOWER YOUR NETS FOR A CATCH: When we reflect on the life and ministry of Jesus it is pretty clear that so much of it was unexpected. God’s chosen people were certainly awaiting a Messiah, a Savior, but they were expecting a rich and powerful king, not an itinerant preacher. Even the people Jesus surrounded himself with – the poor, sinners, the marginalized – were unexpected. Why wouldn’t the Savior surround himself with more influential people? Yet, we know that Christ came to save all, not just some and that he casts his net far and wide in order to draw all people to himself. As followers of Christ, we seek to be his face and hands and heart in the world today and we look for countless ways to invite others to share in his life of faith. The words he speaks to Peter and the Apostles are spoken to us. “Do not be afraid” to “put out into deep water” and inspire the hearts of everyone you meet to know and love Jesus. While you may not think so, your witness of faith can be just what someone else needs to go deeper themselves in their relationship with the Lord. On Mission for The Church Alive! invites us all to look for ways build up the Body of Christ. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more.
