The Stonehill Vision states that ‘we are an internationally-minded community of spirited learners, dedicated to the development of knowledgeable, caring, confident and responsible global citizens’. After experiencing the PYP Exhibition last week, the audience could be left in no doubt that we are a school that is dedicated to this vision. The quality of the Exhibition presentations was outstanding. The students personified the essential elements of the PYP and were able to tangibly demonstrate to the community that they were knowledgeable, caring, confident and responsible Global Citizens.

Students spoke knowledgeably and articulately on a range of issues that are of personal and significant interest to them. I would like to put on record my sincere thanks to all those involved in supporting the P8 students during their Exhibition learning journey over the past couple of months, in particular, the P8 Teaching team for their talent, dedication and commitment.

If you were unable to attend the PYP Exhibition Presentation, you can find a recording of the live stream on the P8 Blog (www.pypblogs.com).

On Friday 5th May we will host a PYP Host Culture Celebration Day. At morning break time, children will share a traditional Indian breakfast with members of our support staff. Throughout the day, children will also participate in a range of cultural activities to help them develop a better understanding of the country we all live in. We are encouraging children to wear traditional Indian clothes on Friday to make the day more colourful.

Sun SafeOver the next few weeks we will be reinforcing the importance of Sun Safety with the children. We have a ‘No Hat No Play’ policy at school and we ask children to bring water bottles to school that can be refilled throughout the day. We also encourage children to bring sunscreen into school so that they can reapply throughout the day. Teachers for younger students will keep the sunscreen in class and remind children to reapply at appropriate times. Children may also bring sunglasses to school to wear at break times if they wish. UV protective swimming tops (rash tops) may also be worn during swimming lessons and during swimming ECA's. We would be grateful if you could reinforce this message at home and make sure that hats, water bottles and sunscreen are labelled with your child’s name.

Earth Day Assembly and Activities in P6

Last week’s P6 assembly made connections between Earth Day and our current unit, How The World Works. Students researched and presented a history of Earth Day, from its beginnings in the burgeoning counterculture of the late 1960s and 1970s.

P6D delighted in researching about how the world was back in the 60’s with its awareness and drive for world peace, environmental issues, exciting music and talented musicians and the huge shift in reflective environmental mindset.

We listened to the music of the 60s like Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Beatles, watched an interview with John Lennon and listened to Lennon sing Give Peace a Chance, which we loved and sang many times together. Also, P6D learnt about the influential book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson (1962) and the impact on society that started the change towards caring for the environment.

We learnt about the voice of the student protest groups, the style of dress and manner in which young people spoke to each other. P6D researched the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill that is still today considered the largest oil spill in the world. We made connections about how all these events led to Gaylord Nelson dedicating one day a year for Earth, calling it Earth Day in 1970.

P6A students organised the big ideas of climate change using elements of the PYP in their unit of inquiry: knowledge, concepts, attitudes, and action. They decided to get into groups to share different aspects of climate change and global warming, through these elements. The science of global warming and the greenhouse effect was explained, with the influence of CO2, pollution, and UV rays from the Sun. Cause and effect were defined, and a chain of causation made between human activity and some of the main consequences of global warming for the environment and ecosystems.

The attitudes of appreciation and commitment were described, with examples of how we can show these attitudes when caring for our planet. P6A had painted a large map of Earth, and invited students from other PYP classes to write on the map how they appreciated Earth during the rest of the day. They also had a planting session of saplings at lunch time, along with P4 students.

Finally, several students identified behaviours and small actions that we can all make to reduce climate change. Each action was explained in terms of why it is important, and some tips were given for how to make those changes in behaviour.

In EAL P6 students have been investigating the concept of climate change. While investigating, they explored different stories of people around the world who were forced to make changes in their life due to the changing climate. Students then came up with the idea to write a play about climate change. This was a wonderful opportunity to express themselves.

The P6 EAL students were extremely creative and integrated their imagination and real-life experiences into the play. They suggested their own dialogue and improvised the entire play by adding and changing words to incorporate a rich and accurate vocabulary and varied sentence structure. The EAL students captivated the entire audience when they presented their play at the PYP Assembly. They shared practical solutions on how to take responsibility to save the planet.

Secondary Parent-Teacher-Student ConferencesThe secondary Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences (M1-D1) were a huge success on Wednesday, 26 April with over 800 appointments. On behalf of the teaching staff, I would like to thank all the parents who came and discussed the progress of their child (ren).

The ISACI Swimming competition commenced this morning with an opening ceremony in the MYP Courtyard. Nelly Vandame, D1, and her group did a superb synchronised swimming presentation at the start of the tournament. The event will continue today and tomorrow. All parents and students are cordially invited to witness this event.

The Instrumental Music Concert was held yesterday in the MPH. It was a fabulous performance from the primary and secondary students, which was greatly enjoyed by the students, staff and the parents.

The IB DP examinations commence this afternoon at 12.30 pm. On behalf of entire Stonehill community, I would like to extend our best wishes for the examinations. The examinations will end on Friday 19 May 2017.

The D2 Graduation Ceremony will take place on Saturday, 27 May 2017 in the school premises at 6.30 pm.

The D2 Leavers’ Assembly on 21 April was a wonderful celebration of their achievements. The students spoke from the heart about their successful journey at Stonehill. I would like to thank the D1 students and Ms. Manpreet for the organisation and the D2 parents for all their support in terms of refreshments and fabulous gifts.

Semester 2 examinations: The M1-M5 examinations are scheduled for 1, 2 and 5 June 2017. The D1 examinations will be held from 30 May to 5 June 2017.

Kind regards,Narendra MehrotraSecondary Principal

Leavers AssemblyApril 21st was a day filled with excitement and flow of emotions as the D1 students bid farewell to their seniors. The D2's have been a role model for their D1’s in almost every field. Students look up to them for inspiration and motivation in academics, sports, music, dance, and drama.

The entire audience of teachers and students were carried away by the speeches of the D2 students where they thanked the school and in particular their teachers for shaping their future. The D1's left no stone unturned to lighten the mood of their D2’s by their performances. The programme started with a hilarious skit where the D1's imitated their D2’s who were in giggles while seeing the act as they remembered the good times they have spent in school.

The talented singers and musicians in D1 enthralled their audience with a lovely song. The dancers recharged the audience and lifted the spirits of the D2's with a foot tapping number.

One of the D1's gave a speech expressing how much the D2’s meant to them. The ceremony ended by giving D2's a bouquet and a pen drive to store their memories. The entire school came out and held hands creating a passage for the D2's as they move on in their lives.

We wish them all the best!Manpreet Kaur

Process in Drawing

In our M5 Visual Arts course the third unit of work was called “Another Me” where we looked at clothing and fashion from ancient cultures, and then we created our own contemporary designs for clothing and makeup.

I did several sets of designs. With each of the designs, I retained certain attributes of the ancient designs and added my own elements of contemporary design in order to create a combination of ancient and modern fashion.

There are two examples of my design drawings inspired by ancient Egyptian culture, and two drawings inspired by ancient Chinese culture. Since fashion is about the total look I looked at makeup and hairstyle designs as well. For the Egyptian makeup and hair, I incorporated braids and gold jewellery. For the Chinese inspired set of designs I wanted to keep a natural look but incorporated a traditional symbol for the forehead.

Process in the M5 Drama Class

The IB MYP Drama programme has a strong emphasis on process as well as product. The simple philosophy being that strong process leads to a strong product and that invaluable learning takes place at each stage of the process.

For the past month, the M5 Drama students, have been working on a play called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The process included writing our own script, blocking scenes and reflecting on our performance in the process journal.

A short synopsis of the play is as follows: The Grimm’s fairy tale starts with the Wicked Queen being jealous of her stepdaughter Snow White because of her beauty. She orders the huntsman to murder her innocent stepdaughter but later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little dwarfs. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a death-like sleep that can be broken only by a kiss from the Prince.

The students came to an agreement as to who will play which role and, in order to achieve our goal for a successful play, we all have set different goals to be completed by the beginning of June. We created a method that would allow us to improve our play from week to week.

A part of drama is to learn organisational skills and time management. By the last week of April, our objective was to learn and improve facial expression. To achieve this goal we decided to watch the Disney version of Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. This was done in order to take into account what is happening in the scenes, and to take note of facial expressions. The 1st week of May we decided that our goal was to match facial expressions with music. To achieve this goal we decided to learn the flow of the music by heart and relate level of strength of facial expressions for music: ‘High’ → Stronger expression, ‘Medium’ → Mediocre strengths expressions, ‘Low’ → Weak, constant expression.

For the last couple of weeks throughout May, we decided our goal was to have a full run through each lesson. To achieve this goal, we will analyse each character's performance and try to improve minor flaws in acting and look at final details to make changes in order to have a quality performance

Design Technology: Building a Model House

Our unit is “Get inspired and make a 3D Design/Model” and I accepted the challenge.

I am making 3D model of a modest house. As a part of the process I have done research, developed a design brief and come up with the design specifications of my house. I created sketches of the house and selected the best sketch for the final product. I created a plan which includes all resources for making the product.

Due to my interest in architecture, I chose to build a model house. The house is a very basic house, in the scale of 1 to 30. I added some features like transparent windows and functioning doors.

As soon as I finish the first stage, I will start to go deeper into the ergonomic details - for example the positioning of beds and the design of the kitchen (with functioning cupboards). I have chosen to use recycled materials like cardboard to make this 3D model.

M1 Design students have recently completed their Unit 3 Game Design with students choosing to design either a Digital Game or a Board Game.

The challenge was to see who could design a game with specifications developed from investigation and analysis.

The final solutions designed and created by the M1 students were truly amazing. The students who designed and produced the physical board games particularly enjoyed the “hands on” making of their final product, of course supported by the use of digital aspects of design.

Students use the Design Cycle to investigate, devise solutions, construct/ produce final outcomes and evaluate their product.

Specification Comments/Images

1 Colourful

2 Different inages/pictures/drawing

3 Different equipment

4 Different shape

It needs to have different kinds of shapes so that it won’t be a boring game.

It should be colourful and have bright colours.

It should have different images/pictures/drawing because if it was the same then it is boring.

The Power of Music

I can't wait to learn about the topic of "Healing Music" since I truly believe that it helps people let go of their emotions and feel free from any disappointments and problems. I also think that for people who are suffering from  illnesses, melodies are very effective as they can relieve them from stress,  pain and could even heal  them more efficiently than medicine! We will have a few "music spots" in school so anyone is welcome to just  came and play an  instrument to relieve  themselves from stress and pressure or just to have fun! Anaelle Jarrault

In Music, we are starting a new unit titled "the Power of Music". I think this new unit will entail how music affects the decisions we take and our habits. I also think that the unit teaches how music has a huge influence on our life and our health.  Sachin Rammoorthy

Home Language Books

Dear Parents,

Do you have books to give away?We have a solution for you!If you are leaving Bangalore and moving on or even spring cleaning and need to downsize on books - you could donate your gently used books to the library. The secondary library would like to build a ‘World Languages Collection’ of books from languages other than the languages taught at Stonehill. We do have a small selection of Swedish, German, Italian, Hebrew and Danish books with us and we would love to add to the existing collectionMany thanks for your leaving contribution, to the Stonehill Library!

CAS Report

Garbage in India is a blind spot. Our CAS Group decided to bring this blind spot into view of the public. Everything has a start, and our small start began on Saturday, the 22nd of April. We cleaned the street in front of Stonehill. Each time a person passed by and understood the purpose of our work, one of our targets of spreading awareness without using paper and posters, was being met. With every passing minute we realised, how much needed to be done. There were so many changes that had to be implemented.

An important realisation was that working in the hot sun can be extremely tiring and one important need during summer is shade. Hence, we came up with a plan to plant as many trees as we could by the end of this year. We will start by planting 10 cherry trees this week.

By the end of our Saturday’s work, we enjoyed working so much that most of us decided to take this activity and make this our ECA as well as our CAS project. On the whole, we thoroughly enjoyed this activity. Each minute taught us something new. I think everyone should do his or her part in helping the environment.

Change does begin with us. Vaishnavi Arun

Our group was delighted to be a part of an activity like this. To begin with, we decided to divide the road into segments and work on each segment as we proceeded. We have collected 15 bags of garbage. It was surprising to see, how people were so careless about garbage disposal.

During the time we spent in the activity, we came up with many ideas as to what can be done to separate the garbage and how to dispose it in a way that would affect the environment in a positive way. Everybody is very enthusiastic about this project and we all hope this turns into a big success.

We also hope, that this would make a difference in the society and would also encourage people to dispose of garbage in a manner that is eco-friendly. Lavanya Chugh

The Annual Boarding Dinner on Thursday 20 April saw around 60 people consisting of students, staff and special guests, farewell the D2 Boarders and celebrate what was Boarding 2016/17.

It was an excellent night with tables and seating in the beautiful Boarding Garden lit with fairy lights. Thankfully the threatening rain held off for the evening.

A Boarding family night complete with some excellent and emotional speeches, great food provided by our Catering Department and excellent company.

All the best to our D2’s for the upcoming exams and their future.

The Boarding Community would like to acknowledge the work done to keep the Boarding gardens looking beautiful by our gardeners.

See Mr. Jayarama maintaining one of a number of hedges around the buildings.

The Boarding precinct, including the garden area always looks fantastic with trimmed hedges and manicured lawns.

EXEATThe coming weekend is a three day weekend due to the Monday May day holiday, creating an EXEAT for our Boarders – this allows some boarders to travel home and back within the three days. Boarding remains open during this time for Boarders wishing to stay in.

End of Year TravelWith the end of year now less than two months away, Boarding families and students need to plan for travel home and clearing gear out of Boarding House rooms. This can be a daunting task.

I would ask that parents advise travel plans for end of year early by emailing details to the Head of Boarding: [email protected] will enable us to organize and coordinate transport to airports, train and bus stations.

Please Note: Boarding closes from 4pm Friday 16th June 2017.
