Genetic Health in Primary Prevention
Course Description
20th century genetics dealt only with the genetic impact on disease. Since the Genome Project was completed in 2003, the new science of epigenetics, i.e. factors the can impact the expression of DNA, has exploded onto the healthcare stage. 21st century epigenetics is the software while established DNA patterns are the hardware. The door is now open to understanding the genetic risk for disease while a person is healthy before there is the presence of disease. Genetic companies are working with pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs in this area. The science of nutrigenomics is the natural alternative that has an epigenetic impact on DNA risk for disease. This course will cover the opportunity chiropractic physicians have to strengthen patient health through understanding and application of the science of epigenetics in primary prevention. As a clinical application example, I will share some of my genetic markers to demonstrate how DNA is not destiny, and that health can be sustained in a natural way by understanding and applying the science of epigenetics.
Learning Objectives
• Understand 20th century genetic application in treating disease • Learn the new science of epigenetics and nutrigenomics • Become aware of 21st century genetic application in primary prevention of disease • Application the personal application of genetic health and how it can apply in a clinical practice

Avoiding Medical Errors by Better Diagnosing Pain and Addiction
Course Description
According to the National Institute on Drug and Abuse, “Every day, more than 130 people in the US die after overdosing on opioids. The CDC estimates that the total “economic burden” of prescription opioid misuse alone in the US, is $78.5 BILLION PER YEAR.” Yet headlines from the NY Times disclose, “Purdue Pharma Payments to Sackler Family Soared Amid Opioid Crisis”. Many of us wonder, why is the death rate continuing to climb after such media exposure about opioids. Practitioners are beginning to realize everyone is familiar with the word “opioid”, however the names of the actual medications that are still being prescribed for pain, many are unfamiliar with. Also, many practitioners are uncomfortable in having the conversation about opioid addiction to those who are currently under medication, creating an opportunity for negligence. This course has been designed to eliminate practice errors for chiropractors through improving diagnostic procedures, coding, history and proper patient education in relation for different pain and addiction issues. Also, this lecture will address different models of care for pain, so proper resources can be created.
Learning Objectives
• Distinguish what current opioid education is being done in each practitioner’s office • Avoid errors in documentation by resulting from a more thorough education and history of your patients • Define the neural pathways used during pain and addiction, as well as what neural/physiological results come from other clinical care pathways • Chronic pain vs Acute pain differences & conservative management
