LAWRENCE QUINNETT ‘06Pianist7:30 p.m. | September 28, 2018Hensdale Chapel

Lawrence Quinnett ’06 is an active concert pianist and MU alum who has given concerts, conducted master classes, and adjudicated competitions in

the Caribbean, the U.K., and the U.S. While a student at Methodist University, he received the Willis C. Gates Music Award for Excellence two years in a row. He has performed Rachmaninoff ’s Third Piano Concerto with the National Repertory Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Carl Topilow, and with the FSU Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Alex Jimenez. An inquisitive musician, Quinnett’s interests include chamber music, harpsichord, new music, and music theory. He has been repeatedly featured as a performing pianist and harpsichordist for Charleston’s Colour of Music Festival. Other notable performances include recitals at the Central Florida Music Teachers’ Association, the Montserrat Music Festival, the Music at Mains Series in Jacksonville, the Trinity artists Series in New Orleans, and the Steinway Piano Gallery of Greensboro, N.C.

Quinnett’s formative teachers include Carolyn Cloud-Absher, Jane Gardiner, Dr. Jon Maisonpierre, and Dr. Douglas Weeks. He

has been privileged to be selected for master classes and coaching sessions with Jeremy Denk, Karen Shaw, Anton Kuerti, Simone Dinnerstein, Elizabeth Pridinoff, Miles Hoffman, the Cavani String Quartet, Frederick Moyer, and Shai Wosner, among others. He holds the Doctor of Music (D.M.) degree from Florida State University, where he studied with Dr. Read Gainsford. Quinnett currently teaches piano and music theory as Assistant Professor of Music at Livingstone College.

A first-generation classical musician, Winifred Garrett is the principal harpist for the Fayetteville Symphony, harpist-in-residence at the Hayti Heritage Center, and

“High Tea Harpist” for the Five Star/Five Diamond Umstead Hotel and Spa. A native of North Carolina, a graduate of the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts, and a recipient of a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, Garrett’s expansive and eclectic freelance career includes performances with the North Carolina Symphony, the North Carolina Theater, the Hickory Choral Society, Carolina Ballet, and Long Leaf Opera, of which she was principal harpist.

D uring her 16 years in New York, Garrett performed with Stevie Wonder at the Metropolitan Opera House, Marvin Gaye at Radio City Music Hall,

and Tony Bennett. Additional New York highlights include performances with the Harlem Boys Choir, the Harlem Girls Choir, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Universal Symphony. Possessing an extensive musical theater repertoire, Garrett was chosen by the Broadway team of Jones and Schmidt to serve as harpist for the first Japan tour of the off-Broadway show, “The Fantasticks” and played the Sullivan Street Playhouse production for four years. Other Broadway and regional theater performances include “The Christmas Spectacular” at Radio City Music Hall starring The Rockettes and “Sweeney Todd ” starring George Hearn at the Papermill Playhouse Theater. Her film credits include “Mo Better Blues” and “School Daze” directed by Spike Lee. Garrett is adjunct professor of harp at North Carolina State University and Guilford College.

MANNA KNJOIMezzo Soprano7:30 p.m. | February 1, 2019Matthews Ministry Center

Manna KnJoi, American Prize winner for opera, embodies the quality and natural endowment to conquer a wide range of repertoire from Mozart to

verismo and modern works. Most recently, KnJoi joined the acclaimed American Spiritual Ensemble for the 2018 Winter Tour and will sing with the New York Contemporary Choir in the hit concert, “Rocktopia,” for its run on Broadway in Spring 2018.

She was seen as Essie Robeson in the world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s new biopic opera “Robeson: The Opera” with Trilogy Opera Company at the New Jersey

Performing Arts Center. Her opera career includes debuts as Pamina in “The Magic Flute” with the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Cio-Cio San in “Madama Butterfly” with New York Lyric Opera at Carnegie Hall, and title role of “Suor Angelica” and Mother in the “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” both with the California Opera Association. Manna also starred in the title role of “Imoinda,” a new opera by UK resident and Cuban-American composer Odaline de la Martinez, filmed for Opera America-affiliated companies.

KnJoi has won the 2012 Elaine Malbin Vocal Competition, Mid-South District Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Lily Pons Scholarship

from the Palm Springs Opera Guild, and the Alabama National Society of Arts and Letters Vocal Competition, and is the three-time winner in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Vocal Competition. When Manna sang for Marilyn Horne, the legendary mezzo-soprano, pronounced her voice “an incredible instrument.”

Dr. Carlos Castilla has been featured as a soloist with orchestras and chamber ensembles, as well as in solo recitals in different cities in Latin America and

the United States. He has worked as a collaborative artist with orchestras featuring stars such as Placido Domingo, James Galway, and Bernadette Peters. Carlos is the co-founder of Duo Guitiano, along with Cuban-American pianist Amanda Virelles, and is known for his innovative technique, clear sound, and soulful interpretations.

Castilla holds a Bachelor of Music from Los Andes University at Bogotá-Colombia, where he studied with Maestro Jaime Arias Obregón, and also holds a

master’s degree and a doctorate in guitar performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Before coming to the United States, Carlos worked as a guitar professor at Universidad del Atlántico in his native Barranquilla, Colombia, where he

also founded and directed the Philharmonic Society of Barranquilla (SOFIBA), which organized and promoted a vast array of cultural events in the community.

He is a devoted teacher and performer and is active as a recitalist, lecturer, and adjudicator. After living in Nashville, TN. for the past four years where he

taught at Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University, he now lives in Fayetteville, N.C. Carlos runs a private studio and teaches at Fayetteville State University, North Carolina State University, Coastal Carolina Community College, and Methodist University.
