Dear Friends,

“Change” continued to be the hallmark of the 2016-2017 Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra season.

As you are aware, the 2016-2017 was a “search season,” the industry moniker used when describing the process for the hiring of a new Director/Conductor. As you know, our process began in August 2015 with the appointment of a “transition committee” led by MAJ(Ret.) Frank Till. After reviewing 274 applications from literally all over the world, our transition committee recommended 5 very highly qualified finalists for the position. These 5 individuals traveled to Fayetteville, spent a week in our community, andconducted our musicians in a major concert. The 2016-2017 season culminated in the successful completion of our search for a new Music Director/Conductor and we look

forward to Stefan Sanders taking his baton and leading the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra well into the future.

The 2016-2017 season began on a somewhat ominous note. A week before our first finalist arrived in Fayetteville, Hurricane Matthew arrived leaving Fayetteville and the surrounding area a mess, not to mention the many lives it disrupted. Undaunted, the show went on and from all the comments I heard following that initial concert, that concert set the tone for the rest of the season, providing a much needed lift to the spirits of many of our supporters that were adversely affected by Matthew’s visit.

Other highlights of the 2016-2017 Season include:

• The second annual FSO Jazz & Wine Fest, now permanently scheduled for the month of April in each season due to weather considerations.

• The implementation of the instrument lending library for the Fayetteville Symphony Youth Orchestra, funded by a grant of $100,000 from the John William Pope Foundation.

• The Fayetteville Symphony Youth Orchestra, only in its third season saw its membership grow from 35 to 60 young musicians; performing 3 concerts, to include a “side by side” with guest conductor Joseph Young.

• The St. John’s Concert Series continued to grow in popularity and attendance.• Performance of “Peter & the Wolf” for all Cumberland County School System 3rd Graders.• FSO musicians continued to mentor high school string students and also expanded the mentoring program into

middle school string classes.• Our fifth annual Memorial Day Concert conducted under the baton of our Principal Trumpet, Dr. Tim Altman.

This outdoor concert continues to grow in popularity as our attendance figures attest.

As we eagerly anticipate “Gone to Carolina,” the theme of Maestro Sanders’ first season at the helm of the FSO, I urge everyone to get their tickets early and encourage your friends and neighbors to do likewise; you will not be disappointed!

For my part, working with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra continues to be an honor and a privilege. Thank you for your support of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and I look forward to seeing you this concert season!

Sincerely,Joseph J. VonnegutBoard Chair

In November 2016, we presented two concerts for all 4,000+ third graders in the Cumberland County Schools to introduce them to the

purpose and power of a live symphony orchestra. Our own musicians also went into 29 elementary schools over the month of

October to present the third graders an engaging and informative Q&A session about the symphony orchestra and Peter and the Wolf (the

main piece of the Third Grade Concert in November). These educational sessions helped prepare the students for their upcoming trip to our concert with a deeper knowledge and understanding of a

live symphonic concert experience. The musicians who helped with the classroom visits were Dr. Larry Wells (Trumpet), Ms. Julia Atkins

(Clarinet), Mrs. Sarah Busman (Flute), and Ms. Barbara Gates (Cello).

Summer Music Camp

From June 12-16, 2017 we held our summer music camp at Fayetteville Academy. Unlike the traditional band or orchestra camp, the FSO Summer Music Camp is an individualized focused day camp that offers small ensemble playing opportunities, daily group and individualized instruction, and masterclasses/lectures on fundamentals and advanced technique. Students were assigned to chamber ensembles for the week and worked closely with the instructors and other students in a fun and inviting musical atmosphere. The instructors for the week were all professional musicians of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and included Dr. Larry Wells (Trumpet), Mr. Nate Leyland (Cello), Mrs. Anne Leyland (Violin), Ms. Julia Atkins (Clarinet), and Mrs. Sarah Busman (Flute).
