“...and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs
in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”
Isaiah 58:10-11

The 19th century preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon once said to his congregation, “Our seasons of fasting and prayer at the Tabernacle have been high days indeed; never has Heaven’s gate stood wider; never have our hearts been nearer the central Glory.”
Is this true? Do heaven’s gates stand wider when we fast? Do our hearts come nearer to the central glory when we fast? Does God really work on behalf of those who fast? God certainly does! God has many blessing in store for those who come before God fasting. Through fasting, God works miracles, sanctifies, inclines to our prayers, withholds judgment, frees the captives, cleanses the body physically, and most importantly, God glorifies God’s self.
In 2 Chronicles 20:3 Jehoshaphat called the congregation of Judah to fast. As we begin our congregational fast we must ask, “Why are we fasting?” Each of us will be fasting for different reasons. Some of us will be fasting for spiritual renewal, guidance, healing, the resolution of problems, special grace to handle a difficult situation, spiritual, numerical, and financial church growth, and a closer relationship with God? Ask the Holy Spirit for clarification and objectives for your prayer fast. This will enable you, during your prayer time, to pray more specifically and strategically. Through fasting and prayer we humble ourselves before God so the Holy Spirit will stir our souls, awaken our church, and heal our land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. Make this a priority in your fasting.
Remember, as we begin our 40 day congregational fast, we do not fast on Sunday. The 40 days of a Lenten Fast are days of discipline and self-restraint. Sunday, the Lord’s Day, should never be a day of fasting, but a day of celebration! So each Sunday we suspend our Lenten disciplines and celebrate. St. Paul’s lets begin seeking God’s face on March 5th, Ash Wednesday, and see what God will do in the our personal lives, church and community through prayer and fasting. PO

MOST COMMON BIBLICAL REASONSFOR FASTING
To strengthen our ability to turn our attention to the Lord.
Daniel 9:1‐3 provides an example of how to engage God through prayer and supplication.
When facing a great challenge or obstacle.
Simply stated, when you don’t know what to do, seek God. (In 2 Chronicles 20:1:4; similarly in Ezra 8:21‐23).
To be receptive to direction and wisdom from God.
Consider your role in listening for God’s direction. When you want Him to reveal something in your life ‐ big or small ‐ you must first place yourself in a posture to hear from Him.
To bring our flesh under submission and to combat temptation and spiritual opposition.
Christians are constantly under attack. We are only able to withstand these temptations and entanglements by prayer and fasting. (Mark 9:29, Matthew 4:1‐3).
To draw closer to God.
When we want to develop a closer relationship with God, fasting and prayer are the best ways to get closer to God (2 Chronicles 7:14).
