Meet the Team

Jon EdwardsTechnology Consultant

“I started with Farol, Hinckley, in 2004 and worked my way

through the John Deere Apprenticeship, achieving my NVQ Level 3. With agricultural technology moving at such a

pace I enjoy being at the cutting edge action. I am still based at Hinckley and specialise in

Sprayers and Combines.”

Jeff RichingsTechnology Sales Manager

Charlie PhippsTechnology Advisor

“I joined Farol Ltd in 2002 with 8 years’ experience as a New Holland technician. Having worked up through the ranks I now hold the role of Farol

Technology Sales Manager.

As department manager I lead a team of 5 skilled staff supporting our customers with all aspects

of precision farming and connected support. I’m also group product sales specialist for sprayers,

another part of the job I enjoy very much.”

“I’ve been at Farol Ltd for 5 years now, initially managing the workshop and have now moved into a connected support role. This involves overseeing

the new Expert Alerts and Machine Monitor systems from John Deere.

I also monitor machine service intervals, enabling us to be more proactive. AMS is becoming increasingly more integrated and depended on, and therefore our role in FarmSight is more critical than ever.”

Richard HoldcroftTechnology Consultant

“Based at Milton Common, I’ve been at Farol Ltd since August 2014. I’ve previously worked in the Parts department and am

now a Technology Consultant in the FarmSight team, specialising

in combines and foragers. Throughout the warmer months

I’ll be found running group combine demonstrations.”

Henry MyattTechnology Consultant

“I have been with Farol Ltd since July 2017, having come from an agricultural sales and marketing

background. Based at Milton Common, my key focus is on

the implementation of new AMS products, as well as FarmSight

marketing and events. I am also working on the development of Farol TechSight and TurfSight.”

Welcome to the latest edition of our Farol Technology magazine. With harvest done for another year, now is the time to reflect on 2017 and make plans for the year ahead.

If you’re wondering where to start, we may just have the tool for you! On page 8 we introduce a new Operations Centre tool called Crop Planner. Crop Planner enables you to easily plan field rotations for the next 10 years. Not only this, but Crop Planner is also integrated into the recently featured MyJobConnect work order management system from John Deere. MyJobConnect coupled with Crop Planner enables you to send field tasks straight to the operators mobile device, with all the relevant details and field locations. All this & more on page 8. Now, who’s heard of ‘Big Data’? With all the press around the subject recently I’ll be surprised if you haven’t. Does the term Big Data scare or confuse you? Worry not as

I’ll explain what it means, and why it’s so exciting for agriculture. Big Data is the collection of large amounts of data, mainly collected electronically, which can be used to identify trends and patterns. Every day, humans now upload over 1 billion documents and 55 million pictures online.

Information uploaded by social media and connected devices is then used by companies to improve what they know about customers wants and needs. The goal is to make decisions based on large amounts of scientific data, not just hunches. With Big Data, less is definitely NOT more, as more data makes for more accurate results! On the road, Big Data is providing the motoring industry with the information they need via powerful algorithms, to produce a car that will one day be able to drive the streets completely accident free. In fact, John Deere recently acquired

a state-of-the-art Californian company, Blue River Technology, whose revolutionary machinery has the ability to drastically reduce spray applications and also massively reduce resistance from weeds. To find out more, visit page 4. To bring things closer to home, Farol now have over 450 connected machines across our 6 depots. With your permission, we are now able to better support your business. Connectivity and speed of data transfer enables ‘The Dealer Of Tomorrow’ where we are able to proactively monitor your machines health, therefore increasing uptime and reducing costly and inconvenient repair bills. Turn to page 8 to learn more about how we are doing this with Expert Alerts. Enjoy the read and, from all of us at Farol and the FarmSight team, Happy New Year.

JOHN DEERE ACQUIRES BLUE RIVER TECHNOLOGY

Into the Future of FarmingAs of 6th September 2017 Deere & Company has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Blue River Technology, which is based in Sunnyvale, California and is a leader in applying machine learning to agriculture.

“We welcome the opportunity to work with a Blue River Technology team that is highly skilled and intensely dedicated to rapidly advancing the implementation of machine learning in agriculture,” said John May, President, Agricultural Solutions, and Chief Information Officer at Deere. “As a leader in precision agriculture, John Deere recognizes the importance of technology to our customers. Machine learning is an important capability for Deere’s future.”

As an innovation leader, Blue River Technology has successfully applied machine learning to agricultural spraying equipment and Deere is confident that similar technology can be used in the future on a wider range of products, May said.

Blue River has designed and integrated computer vision and machine learning technology that will enable growers to reduce the use of herbicides by spraying only where

weeds are present, optimizing the use of inputs in farming – a key objective of precision agriculture.

“Blue River is advancing precision agriculture by moving farm management decisions from the field level to the plant level,” said Jorge Heraud, co-founder and CEO of Blue River Technology. “We are using computer vision, robotics, and machine learning to help smart machines detect, identify, and make management decisions about every single plant in the field.”

Already in 2017, Blue River Technology has been listed among Inc. Magazine’s 25 Most Disruptive Companies, Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, CB Insights 100 Most Promising Artificial Intelligence Companies in the World, and the Top 50 Agricultural Innovations by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Deere said it will invest $305 million to fully acquire Blue River Technology. Deere plans to have the 60-person firm remain in Sunnyvale with an objective to continue its rapid growth and innovation with the same entrepreneurial spirit that has led to its success.

Product UpdatesJOHN DEERE S700 (ICA 2)Introducing the most advanced grain harvesting technology from John Deere so far, the S700 Series. This new offering includes four new S700 Combine models (S770, S780, S785 and S790) that offer producers significant improvements in “smart” technology, improved operator comfort and more high quality data.

Building on the proven field performance of the S600 Combines introduced in 2012, the new S700 Combines incorporate the latest in automated harvesting technology. Many of these changes make it easier on the operator by allowing the combine to make needed adjustments automatically, on the go. Technological advances include the new ICA 2 - Integrated Combine Adjustment system, which enables operators to focus on the combine operation as once the desired output is set, no further input is required. Compared with competitor systems, the John Deere ICA 2 is fully integrated into the on-board 4600 Command Centre display, incorporates a tailings camera which provides visual analytics of tailings content, and has a very attractive list price.

CROP PLANNERAs part of the recent MyJohnDeere Operations Centre update, the Crop Planner tool was introduced. Crop Planner allows farmers to plan future cropping systems up to 10 years ahead, as well as input data from up to 10 years previous.

Not only can farmers plan up to 3 crops per season per field (including a cover crop), but the Operation Plan display enables farmers to plan the operations to

be completed on each individual field, such as tillage, seeding, or application.

When coupled with the MyJobConnect work order management system, also from John Deere, jobs can be created in the Crop Planner tool and instantly released into MyJobConnect. Here, job instructions are sent directly to operators’ mobile devices.

Other new tools include Product Manager, Land Manager, and Terminals, all of which are previously existing functions that have simply been centralised.

EXPERT ALERTSWouldn’t it be great if you could catch part failures before they happen? If harvest could go as planned with minimal interruption?

Well you’re in luck! Thanks to John Deere’s continued Research and Development in and around intelligent work systems, Farol Ltd are now one

of the only dealers in the country to be able to offer ‘Expert Alerts’. Expert Alerts is a state of the art problem identification system that instantly warns customers and dealers as soon as an issue is about to arise.

Not after it happens, but before it happens.

This enables the dealer to ensure the required part is in stock, and also arrange for technical staff to be available. The customer benefits from increased uptime, as well as reduced costs and a tighter schedule.

ROTHERFIELD ESTATE: RETROFIT JOHN DEERE RATECONTROLLER AND MOBILE RTK

Customer Study

Covering 8000 hectares per annum, Joe Edwards, of Rotherfield Estate, made the decision to invite Farol Ltd to install a John Deere rate controller on his Bateman self-propelled sprayer.

Joe had already been running John Deere Mobile RTK guidance (2cm accuracy pass-to-pass) on his 7230R drilling tractor to cover the 850 hectare estate; and therefore it was the promise of even further accuracy, and ensuing reduced chemical bills, that persuaded the decision.

Using Mobile RTK in conjunction with the sprayer to map field boundaries, Joe has the AB lines and boundaries saved for all fields, with zero GNSS drift. All documentation is sent to the John Deere Operations

Centre, where it is further processed and analysed by Gate Keeper.

With the new system in place, there are now 10 sections, compared with the previous 4. Dribble bars and a twin line, wired to the master switch on the joystick, are used to enable fertiliser and chemical at the press of a button.

Since having the rate controller installed, Joe’s operator, Albert, has sprayed 6500 hectares, reducing overlap and the total area sprayed by 3%. Not only this, but Albert

has noted the decreased fatigue when operating the sprayer, and enjoys the ability to use headland control, and therefore cover the land work first.

‘If anyone has any doubts on making the decision to add the rate controller then I’d say, just go for it.’ Joe recommends. ‘It will definitely pay for itself, and is very easy to use, as well as being far more accurate.’

He goes on to say, ‘The backup from Farol Ltd has been second to none. The system has provided us with a more efficient operation and has allowed for easier record keeping for spraying.’

Farming 1000 hectares in the Chiltern Hills, of which 820 hectares are combinable crops, Charlie Edgley, of Kensham Farms, and his team usually harvest around 700 hectares of winter milling wheat with the balance made up of barley and occasionally oats and oilseed rape.

Since most of the farm is in take-all decline, Kensham Farms can grow continuous wheat, with some fields having been wheat for the past 22 years. An average harvest will produce between 6,500 and 7,000 tonnes of cereals.

Charlie is on his third consecutive John Deere combine, which he bought for the 2017 harvest, and has three John Deere tractors, all kitted out with John Deere AMS guidance systems.

In order to get the most out of the new combine, Charlie received a Farol Connected Combine Support Package. We have been happy with our connected combine package as we feel it ensures that we are making the most of our investment.’ Charlie says.

‘The connected combine report shows where we are operating the machine efficiently, such as minimal time spent in idle with the grain tank full. It also suggests possible areas for improvement, such as increasing the amount of time we use AutoTrac guidance.’

As part of the package, Kensham Farms received a range of services, including Remote Display Access (RDA) sessions.

Of the RDA sessions, Charlie says, ‘RDA provides an instant connection compared to previous versions, which helps with troubleshooting and consultation on optimising settings.’

He goes on to say, ‘The Farol FarmSight team ensure that we are operating on the latest software and they are always contactable.’

17.2 Update, what’s new?

Straight Track Fill from BoundaryAn A+B Straight track can easily be created when AutoTrac is used with boundary fill pattern. When ‘Record Fill’ is used on a Boundary Fill track, A+B straight tracks are created to fill the inside of the boundary and track created from the boundary. Tracks must be selected from track list once generated.

Boundary Fill PatternAs part of SU2017-2, guidance tracks can now be created from field boundaries. These guidance tracks use the logic of adaptive curve tracks and are generated from boundaries created from coverage or imported boundaries. Once created, 3 lines will be viewed: the active guidance line and the guidance lines to the right and left of the active line. When moving inward, an additional line will be created. If boundary track is selected as current track it will

remain on the display as an adaptive curve. If not, it will be deleted with the boundary it was generated from.

Fields and BoundariesBoundaries can be created by manually driving the perimeter of the field in SU2017-2. This functionality will allow operators to pause recording during boundary creation and move to another end of the boundary area to resume recording again.. The system will generate a line between the two points to finish the boundary.

Uptime and fuel efficiency -guaranteed!Business minded farmers and contractors rightly like to know in advance the costs associated with operating and owning a tractor. Thanks to innovations such as JDLink telematics and remote monitoring technology, John Deere enables customers to view machinery operation data, such as fuel consumption. JDLink also offers the opportunity to introduce new services for maximising tractor uptime. John Deere have now taken a further step forwards in this area with the full-scale launch of the revolutionary Fuel Guarantee and Uptime Guarantee programmes.

Initiated in 2016 with the 7310R, the Fuel Guarantee programme which financially rewards fuel-efficient driving in transport mode is now available to new owners of all John Deere six-cylinder 6R, 7R and 8R Series wheeled tractors who have signed up to a Farol Select Technology package.

Once a customer signs up to the programme, he and his supplying dealer can use JDLink to record the tractor’s fuel consumption in transport mode during the first full year of ownership.

If the total fuel consumption has exceeded the John Deere target level, customers and refunded by the company. And that’s not all - if the operator achieves a higher fuel efficiency figure than the target level, the owner will receive an efficiency bonus equal to twice the cost of the fuel saved.

Depending on the amount of transport work carried out during the year, this bonus could mean a cash reward up to four figures.“As approximately 50 per cent of the cost of ownership is spent on fuel,

we wan to encourage customers to pro-actively monitor their tractor’s fuel consumption.” says Chris Wigger, John Deere’s vice president sales & marketing for Region 2.

(Europe, the CIS, North Africa and the Near & Middle East)

Uptime GuaranteeThe Uptime Guarantee is a available to new owners of 6R, 7R and 8R/8RT Series tractors who have signed up to a John Deere PowerGard Protection Plus maintenance package in addition to a Farol Premium technology package.

This allows the dealer to provide a new level of preventative maintenance, reducing the risk of an unexpected breakdown. For example, the brand new Expert Alerts service informs the dealer of potential failures before they happen.

“If the customer experiences downtime exceeding 48 hours within the extended warranty period, an equivalent back-up machine will be provided.”

See page 12 for more details on Support Packages
