OWATONNA Steve Guenthner un-derstands the perils of farming.

I was raised on a farm in South Da-kota back in the 50s, and we were dirt poor, Guenthner said. I didnt even know what a soybean was until I came to Minnesota in the 70s. Dad and I strug-gled to get 60 bushels of corn (per acre).

He still remembers 1959, when drought conditions were so bad in the state that 39 counties were declared di-saster areas. That summer, he had to drive the cattle four to five miles down the road so they could eat the only hay that was available hay in ditches.

So when he attends a farm show, such as the upcoming North American Farm and Power Show in Owatonna slated for March 13, 14 and 15, and hears farm-

ers talking about the troubles they are encountering, he can sympathize with them.

Been there, done that, he said. I un-derstand whats going on and how dif-ficult it is.

And thats a good thing, at least for those attending the upcoming Owatonna farm show because Guenthner is the sole director for the expo, and that means the expo will be designed by someone who understands the farming situation and is sympathetic to the farmers needs.

This year marks the 12th year that the Austin, Minn.-based Tradexpos, the company that is responsible for the show, has brought the North American Farm and Power Show to Owatonna a rela-tionship that has been good for Tradex-pos and the City of Owatonna.

The show, which offers free admission, allows visitors hands-on experience with equipment.

And thats what Guenthner and Tradex-pos strive to do match the needs of the attendees to the supplies of the vendors. Its what they do at the four farm shows that they host every year one in Wich-ita, Kan., in November; one in Topeka, Kan., in January; a second in January that one in Fort Wayne, Indiana; and the final show in Owatonna every March.

But each show is different, catering to the needs of the farmers there. For ex-ample, Guenthner said, though Wichita and Topeka are only 140 miles away two hours on a trip straight down the in-terstate the shows are vastly different.

Why?Simple, Guenthner said. In Topeka, 80

percent of the people attending are crop farmers while 20 percent are cattle farm-ers. In Wichita, 20 percent are crop farm-ers while 80 percent are cattle farmers.

Even the names suggest the difference the Topeka Farm Show and the Wichita Farm and Ranch Show. And along with the different names there are different

vendors that will meet the needs of the particular audiences.

The same is true, Guenthner said, of the Owatonna expo.

Whats more, Guenthner said, he tries to keep the show fresh every year by adding new vendors to familiar ones a lesson he learned from his brother-in-law, a farmer in North Dakota who wasnt attending a nearby farm show there because, as the brother-in-law told him, Its always the same people in the same spot, Guenthner said. Guenthner called it his wake-up call.

Youve got to keep it fresh every year, he said.

This year hes striving to keep it fresh with about 30 new vendors still the same quality of vendors, but new.

The North American Farm and Power Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 13 and 14, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 15 at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna.

One of the materials we produce at our quarries is agricultural lime; which we use to spread on fields to increase the crop yields and income for farmers. Agricultural lime neutralizes the acid in the soil; which increases the crop yield. Excessive soil acidity can have a disastrous affect on crop production. Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products can spread lime on fields at a minimum rate of 2 ton per acre; but we can apply more as needed. We use spreader trucks to apply the lime to the fields; the trucks haul approximately 15 tons per load. Please call Stussy Construction and Paulson Rock Products for more information.

Leah also volunteers for the Wills for Heroes program in her spare time.

Leah is originally from Hendricks, Minnesota and a 2002 graduate of Lincoln HI. She currently lives in Chaska, Minnesota with her husband, John and son, Emmett. She enjoys spending her free time with family and friends, traveling, skiing, being outdoors, and attending sporting and music events.

Brian Hensley is the General Partner with In-tego Financial Group, LLC. Brian has specialized his practice by assisting clients with developing successful farm and business succession strate-

gies. He focuses his practice on family owned businesses and helping agricultural clients with their financial needs.

He is a graduate of the University of Ne-braska with a bachelors of science in Business Administration with an emphasis on Econom-ics. Brian continued his professional develop-ment gaining a wide breadth of knowledge in real estate holding his real estate license in North Carolina and Texas.

Brian is currently licensed in Property, Ca-sualty, Life and Health in Minnesota, Iowa, and five other states. Brian is currently pursing his Chartered Life Underwriter designation, the highest level designation in the insurance industry, and will be sitting for his Series 7 Investment designation this spring.

Brian and his wife Sarah Nelson Hensley moved to Albert Lea, MN in the fall of 2013 from Peoria, IL to join Sarahs mothers insur-ance agency, the Donna Nelson Insurance, Inc. Together they enjoy the active lifestyle the Minnesota offers especially exploring area lakes and walking trails. As a Nebraska graduate, Brian is a devoted Nebraska Husker football fan, but being slowly converted into a Gopher fan (at least for basketball!)
