IN recent weeks animal welfaregroups have turned the heatup on year-round housingsystems for dairy cows. Amongthose singled out for criticismwas the Duke of Westminster’s

Lea Manor Farm on the Eaton Estate,Chester, which began operating a“zero-grazing” regime in December.

Up to 800 of the Duke’s 1,400-scowherd spend 365 days-a-year in twolarge cubicle sheds and are milked ina rotary parlour.

Welfare campaigners say the systemis “cruel” and disrupts cow behaviour.Advocates argue year-round housingenables exemplary health monitoringand happy, contented cows.

But do dairy farmers have anychoice? Such are the economics ofmilk production, with slim or negativemargins, that larger, more efficientset-ups, yielding ever more milk, isoften the only way to survive.

Around 10% of the UK dairy herd isnow kept indoors all year, and the fig-ure is growing. The system offers manybenefits, not least from an environ-mental perspective: slurry could beharnessed for energy production, orspread on fields more effectively.

A few years ago the Welsh Govern-ment’s Land Use Climate ChangeGroup advocated exactly such anapproach. Year-round housing couldbe a key way of reducing farming’scontribution to global warming, it said.

Several big dairy units are underdevelopment in North and Mid Wales.Some have been hampered by activ-ists who, incorrectly, have mixed up

zero-grazing with 365-day housing.Zero grazing is all about bringing

grazed grass to cows, rather than tak-ing cows to the grazing, and can berun alongside traditional grazing.

It allows farms to carefully nurturetheir most precious commodities –soil and grass – so that forage yieldscan be maximised. Bought-in feedsare reduced – another environmentalbenefit – and the milk retains all thebenefits that grass-fed cows confer.

In the next 40 years, humans willneed to produce more food than theydid in the previous 10,000 put togeth-er. Ramping up production is inevita-ble, and the efficiencies of scale willalways demand ever bigger units.

Science has a part to play, but at thisyear’s Oxford Farming Conference,UK agriculture was criticised for fall-ing behind in the technology arms race.

Far too often, however, progressiveproducers come up against the intran-sigence of tradition: everyone likesseeing cows out in the fields but some-one will have to pay for it.

IN recent weeks animal welfaregroups have turned the heatup on year-round housingsystems for dairy cows. Amongthose singled out for criticismwas the Duke of Westminster’s

Lea Manor Farm on the Eaton Estate,Chester, which began operating a“zero-grazing” regime in December.

Up to 800 of the Duke’s 1,400-scowherd spend 365 days-a-year in twolarge cubicle sheds and are milked ina rotary parlour.

Welfare campaigners say the systemis “cruel” and disrupts cow behaviour.Advocates argue year-round housingenables exemplary health monitoringand happy, contented cows.

But do dairy farmers have anychoice? Such are the economics ofmilk production, with slim or negativemargins, that larger, more efficientset-ups, yielding ever more milk, isoften the only way to survive.

Around 10% of the UK dairy herd isnow kept indoors all year, and the fig-ure is growing. The system offers manybenefits, not least from an environ-mental perspective: slurry could beharnessed for energy production, orspread on fields more effectively.

A few years ago the Welsh Govern-ment’s Land Use Climate ChangeGroup advocated exactly such anapproach. Year-round housing couldbe a key way of reducing farming’scontribution to global warming, it said.

Several big dairy units are underdevelopment in North and Mid Wales.Some have been hampered by activ-ists who, incorrectly, have mixed up

zero-grazing with 365-day housing.Zero grazing is all about bringing

grazed grass to cows, rather than tak-ing cows to the grazing, and can berun alongside traditional grazing.

It allows farms to carefully nurturetheir most precious commodities –soil and grass – so that forage yieldscan be maximised. Bought-in feedsare reduced – another environmentalbenefit – and the milk retains all thebenefits that grass-fed cows confer.

In the next 40 years, humans willneed to produce more food than theydid in the previous 10,000 put togeth-er. Ramping up production is inevita-ble, and the efficiencies of scale willalways demand ever bigger units.

Science has a part to play, but at thisyear’s Oxford Farming Conference,UK agriculture was criticised for fall-ing behind in the technology arms race.

Far too often, however, progressiveproducers come up against the intran-sigence of tradition: everyone likesseeing cows out in the fields but some-one will have to pay for it.
