ANOTHER autumn, another deluge: a lazyJetstream and a succession of slow movingtroughs has already dumped plenty of rainon Wales this month, with more on the way.

If the past two years are a gauge, farmers will bebracing themselves for more flooded fields, more lostcrops and more stranded livestock.All of which will leave landowners wondering why more

isn’t being done to alleviate the problem.Farmers have long argued for better river dredging.

Most would also like to see banks stabilised and riverscleared of vegetation.These are obvious solutions but, in recent years, watercourse

maintenance has been hamstrung by EU habitat directives andgovernment budget cutbacks.There is also a suspicion harboured by some that farmland is

being deliberately sacrificed asflood storage areas.If the authorities are

struggling, why not let farmerstackle the job themselves? It’sanother imposition on anindustry not exactly flush withcash, but it’s better than thedo-nothing alternative.Clearly, a set of practical

rules would be needed so thatfragile riverbed ecosystems arenot damaged.But it’s not an unrealistic

proposition – year-long pilotschemes are already underwayacross the border.Since October 21, farmers

and landowners in sevenat-risk areas of England havebeen allowed to carry outdredging without needing toobtain a consent.Natural Resources Wales and

the Welsh Government haveyet to be persuaded of themerits of this approach here.At a recent NFU

Montgomeryshire countymeeting in Newtown, members called on NRW to allow farmersto maintain smaller watercourses. This, they argued, would freeup resources to manage larger rivers.“Better regulation isn’t about handing over wholesale

responsibility to farmers,” said county vice chairman Adrian Jones.This chimes with comments made by NRW chief executive

Emyr Roberts when launching the body’s first corporate planlast month.As a new organisation, he said, NRW has a wide remit and “we

won’t be able to do everything, everywhere”.In view of this, sharing responsibility for watercourse

maintenance with farmers seems to make perfect sense.

The Grassland subsoiler has aleading row of straight, serrateddiscs that cut through the turf,the legs to lift and fracture theearth, the full-width packerto consolidate the land backdown level again and, finally,the scarifying harrow to removedead vegetation and scatter anysurface debris.

In doing so, this opens a slot for the leg torun through, reducing the amount of powerneeded to move forward in the soil. Thisaggressive action increases the aeration,leaving a surface 50-100mm raised.

The Sumo range of subsoilers can be usedas a secondary source of cultivation, inmost cases leaving the surface ready todrill.

The Logic Multi-feeder is used when feeding stock outdoors. Its unique featuresmake it not only the best mechanical sheep feeder and cattle feeder availablebut also the quality and robustness of its design and construction ensures it willoutlast any other towed mechanical feeder.

STOCK FARM APPLICATIONSAnyone feeding stock outdoors will benefit from a Logic Multi-feeder. Logicintroduced the original ‘Snacker’ (Snacka) more than twenty years ago andsince then the design has often been copied but never beaten. The LogicSnacker was developed and improved and became the Logic Multi-feeder. Thevery simple, robust electrical system which operates the drop mechanism givesthe Logic Multi-feeder the huge advantage of being able to drop piles of food aminimum of 10 feet apart which means the animals have plenty of space to

feed. This is especially useful for feeding cattle but offers the same benefits when feeding sheep.

With the Logic Multi-feeder, drop distance is simply adjusted by altering the towing speed. In addition, the drop quantity can simply be adjusted to meet groundconditions and flock/herd size . There is a resettable counter which is attached to the front carrier of an ATV or if a landrover/UTV is used, housed in the cab nextto the operator - this means the operator can feed the stock on the move and the amount of feed is accurately monitored and controlled. This unit has excellentground clearance with the design of the delivery chute preventing any build up of mud, snow, etc. which would stop the feed flowing efficiently. All of thesesignificant benefits are the reason why many satisfied customers have paid a premium for a Logic Multifeeder over a drum feeder system.

PRODUCT FEATURESThe standard Logic Multifeeder hopper has a capacity of approximately 320kg (depending upon feed type). An extended hopper version is available with a 500kgcapacity. The standard unit comes with 22x11-8 wheels and tyres although different wheel/tyre combinations are available depending upon individualrequirements. Mudguards and livestock fenders are also available, as are tonneau covers (different sizes for standard and extended hoppers).
