Attractions Rideau Canal Rideau Canal is 202 km long. It connects the Ottawa River (Ottawa) to Lake Ontario (Kingston) . It opened in 1832, and is the oldest operated canal system in North America. In 2007 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Merrickville The historic village along the Rideau Canal and Rideau River, 75 km south of Ottawa, has fascinating shops, nice cafés and an operating lock station. The Blockhouse is an interesting museum. MacKenzie King Estate Set in the Gatineau Hills, this country estate was the summer home of William Lyon MacKenzie King, Canada’s 10 th Prime Minister, for almost 50 years. The Estate features colourful heritage gardens, walking trails, picturesque ruins, and King’s original cottages.
