    1 What is the Genesis of Somaiya Vidyavihar?

    Somaiya Vidyavihar was established in the year 1959 by Padmabhushan Late Shri K J Somaiya - an

    Entrepreneur, Philanthropist and a Visionary. He firmly believed that modern education must have its

    roots in strong values. This underlying theme and legacy of Somaiya Vidyavihar was continued and

    strengthened by his son Late Dr S K Somaiya and is continuing currently by his grandson Shri SamirSomaiya - a Cornell University and Harvard alumnus.

    2 What is Somaiya Vidyavihar Campus like?

    The Somaiya Vidyavihar campus comprises of 34 fully integrated institutes dedicated to Liberal ArtsSciences, Management, Health Care, Humanities, Religion & Cultural Studies, Philosophy and Social

    Sciences and is spread across a 65 acre complex in Vidyavihar, in north central area of Mumbai and a 90

    acre complex at Sion in the heart of Mumbai. Somaiya Vidyavihar is home to over 27,000 students and

    1,700 teaching and administrative staff. Four of the Institutes under Somaiya Vidyavihar includingSIMSR now have been granted autonomous status by the UGC and notified by the University of

    Mumbai . Majority of our Institutions are affiliated to the University of Mumbai.

    3 When was K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research established?

    K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research was established in the year 1981 as a part ofSomaiya Vidyavihar with the objective of providing state of the art education in management and allied

    areas.

    4 What is K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research popularly referred to as?

    K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research is popularly referred to as SIMSR

    (pronounced as sim.sir) by its students, faculty and staff.

    5 Why SIMSR?

    SIMSR is part of the Somaiya Vidyavihar Trust that has completed 55 years in the service of education

    in September 2014. The Institute has been aggressively strengthening its academic and research rigor.

    The Somaiya Vidyavihar is nestled in a 65 acre campus and is the largest private educational complex inMumbai and continuously rated high by various agencies and corporate sector. SIMSR has excellent

    Alumni base. The PGDM, PGDM-IB and PGDM-RM programmes have granted equivalence to MastersDegree by AIU (Association of Indian Universities). These programmes have also been accredited byNational Board of Accreditation (NBA). The Institute has recently got accreditation under South Asian

    Quality Assurance System (SAQS) by Association of Management Development Institutions in South

    Asia (AMDISA)

    7 What are the various milestones achieved by the Institute?

    SIMSR in recent past has achieved the following: The UGC granted the Autonomous status to the Institute for five years starting from AY 2013-14

    onwards.

    PGDM, MMS, PGDM(IB) and PGDM(RM) programmes of the Institute were accredited for 3 years

    by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2013

    The Institute is SAQS accredited by AMDISA for 5 Years with effect from January 2013

    Certified as ISO 9001:2008 by Bureau Veritas Certification

    Awarded the Best Management Institute of the Year 2008 by Bombay Management Association

    8 What is the Infrastructure at the Institute like?

    Infrastructure facilities are as follows:

    The computer center is one of the best equipped IT centers geared to aid the learning processSoftware package like SPSS, SAP-ERP, Rational Rose help in conducting data analysis for businessand marketing research activities, analysis of case studies, preparation of summer training projects

    and concurrent projects.

    The fully computerized library has more than 69,000 books as of November 2014, CDs and video

    films.

    Housed in an area of 7,000 sq feet, the library offers access to online data bases like EBSCOPROQUEST Front & Sullivan, Euro monitor, Warg and financial database like CMIE PROWESS.

    It provides online access to over 8,000 national and international journals, research papers, articles,

    dissertations and financial data. The library also subscribes to a wide range of national and international newspapers, magazines and

    journals.

    Facilities exist for cricket, football, hockey, basketball, table-tennis, lawn tennis, yoga, squash, openair chess along with a well equipped gymnasium. In addition to this the Institute also has a newly

    built running track.

    The canteen of around 2,250 sq feet is located on the ground floor of the Institute building. It is verywell ventilated and has a seating arrangement of more than 100 students at a time.

    The hostel has 660 bed capacity and 20 faculty residences. The hostel is well equipped with allmodern facilities including 24x7 internet facilities, Laundromats, student mess and gymnasium.

    9 What are the salient features that identify SIMSR?

    The Institute facilitates various sports and socio-cultural events that are planned, organised andexecuted by the students and provides great learning experience.

    The social-cell, Enterpreneurship cell - Enactus, immersion in NGOs provide opportunity to developtheir managerial skills.

    Students are motivated to undertake inter-disciplinary projects and research.

    Industry-academia intercation, guest sessions and indutrial visits help them get real time informationabout the corporate world

    10 What is the Faculty-Student ratio at the Institute?

    SIMSR maintains a healthy Faculty-Student ratio of 1:12; The Institute has 98 core faculty members, 35

    of them have Ph.D; 28 faculty members are at various stages of completing Ph.D. More than half of the

    faculties have rich industry experience.

    11 Which are the Foreign Universities/Schools that SIMSR has collaboration with?

    12 What is the selection process for International exchange and Dual Degree Programme?

    Students of all PGDM programmes can avail of these exchange programmes in their second year.

    The students are selected for these exchange programmes based on their merit and first year marks.

    The students will have to apply to the University/B-School and each of the B-School has their ownselection parameters and Process.

    The students will be informed about the programme from time-to-time. The Fees for the exchange programme is borne by the students and it depends upon the

    University/B-School wherever the students get selected.

    13 What is International Immersion?

    The objective of International Immersion is to give a firsthand experience to students of visiting foreign

    country and observe how Business is done in countries other than India:

    An immersion program or a study tour involves students visiting a foreign country for a period of 7to 15 days.

    Structured study tours offer a glimpse into macro-level dynamics and unfamiliar economic

    environments.

    Students visit various companies and have meetings with senior industry leaders in the foreign

    country Students also undergo classroom sessions on doing business with the particular country and

    undertake a project.

    SIMSR initiated the first immersion programme to China in Feb, 2013.So far three teams of studentshave visited China.

    For PGDM Executive students International Immersion is the part of the Programme and the expensecomponent is built-into the fee structure. For the students of other programmes it is optional and theparticipating students will have to bear the expenses.

    14 What was the First Immersion Programme at Shanghai like?

    SIMSR successfully organized the first international immersion program to Shanghai, China from 16t

    to24th Feb 2013. During 9 days International Immersion program to Shanghai and Hangzhou city in China

    the participating students had 16 different learning experiences in the form of factory visits (e.gShanghai Volkswagen, Lenovo, Baosteel etc) and interactions with top management of famouscompanies ( e.g. Director of O&M advertising agency for Asia, Head of Bharat Forge China etc) in

    China.

    16 What will be the batch for which the Apllicants will seek admission to in AY 2015-16 and what is

    17 Are these programmes Approved by AICTE?

    Yes, all the PGDM programmes are approved by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education).

    18 Which of the above programmes have received equivalence to MBA from AIU (Association of Indianuniversities)?

    The programmes PGDM, PGDM-IB and PGDM-RM are now equivalent to MBA The Institute can apply

    for equivalence to MBA, only if its programme has successfully completed FIVE batches.

    19 What is the Eligibility Criteria for Admission to the Programme?

    Student having completed a minimum of three year graduate degree programme in any discipline withminimum 50% aggregate marks from a University, recognized by Association of Indian Universities

    (AIU)/University Grants Commission (UGC)/Approved by AICTE

    All the Applicants will have to appear for CAT 2014/CMAT 2014/XAT 2015 or GMAT examination to qualify

    for the programme. The institute will not consider any other entrance or qualifying examination for the

    Programme.

    20 For whom the GMAT score is applicable?

    GMAT score is applicable to only those applicants who fill the form under NRIs / Foreign Nationals andPIOs The score of last two years Jan2013 - Jan2015 is valid.

    21 Can the applicants under Foreign Nationals / PIOs / NRIs / categories and Children of Working

    Professionals in Gulf apply for all the FIVE (PGDM, PGDM-IB, PGDM-RM, PGDM-FS, PGDM-

    Comm.) programmes?

    NO. The applications under these categories are invited only for PGDM programme. These applicants will

    have to fill up a separate form. The Institute can admit students for PGDM Programme under

    supernumerary quota of 15%. Thus, there are only 18 seats. The applicants if short listed- will have toappear for Written Case Analysis and in depth Personal Interview. The admission to the programme under

    this category will be offered according to the merit position generated separately for applicants under these

    categories. The fees for the students admitted under Foreign National / PIO categories will be THREEtimes the Programme fees. For the applicants under Children of Working Professionals in Gulf the

    programme fees will be same as the domestic applicant.

    22 What if the Applicants under Foreign Nationals / PIOs categories want to apply for the other

    programmes?

    The applicants under Foreign Nationals / PIOs categories are welcome to apply for PGDM-IB, PGDM-

    RM, PGDM-FS and PGDM-Comm. There are no additional seats allocated to them for these ProgrammesThey would be competing within the normal intake of 60. The fees for such selected students will be same

    as the Programme fee.

    23 Apart from qualifying examination what are other parameters that are also looked into for selection to thePGDM, PGDM-IB, PGDM-RM, PGDM-FS and PGDM-Comm. Programmes?

    SIMSR gives only 40% wieghtage to the qualifying examination(CAT 2014/CMAT Sept 2014/ XAT 2015/GMAT)The other parameters and their respective wieghtage are:

    24 What is Stage 1 of Admission Process?

    Appear for either of the qualifying examination and apply to the Institute by filling up on line form.

    25 Using one Application form can a candidate apply for all the Five programmes?

    Yes. However, the Application Form fees will depend upon the number of Programmes applied for.

    26 Is it necessary to give Preference Number to the Programmes while applying for multiple

    programmes?

    Yes. The selection/wait listing for a programme during the counseling session will be guided by this data

    Even if you are applying for one programme, it is important to mention preference as 1 in the columnprovided in the application form.

    27 How can the payment be made for Application form?

    The payment can be made either through Debit card/Credit Card or Demand Draft. The guided

    walkthrough is available while filling the Application Form.

    28 Will we get any receipt for the Application Form Fees?

    In case, the payment is made through Debit Card/Credit card the payer gets a message of successful

    payment as the amount getting debited. The successful generation of Unique Form Number implies thereceipt of the application

    29 What if the payment is made through Demand Draft?

    On receipt of DD, the institute will acknowledge.

    30 Should the applicants send any document?

    In case the payment is made through Debit card/Credit card, the Admit Card and Score Card of the

    qualifying examination(CAT,CMAT,XAT OR GMAT) have to be sent to the Institute.

    For the payment made through DD, the applicants have to send print out of the application form, DD

    admit card and score card of the qualifying examination

    31 What is Stage 2 of the Admission Process?

    Stage 2 is the internal (back office) process that short list the candidates for stage 3. The applicants short

    listed for stage 3 will be informed accordingly.

    32 What is Stage 3? Where all it will be held?

    Applicants will be informed to report for Written Case Analysis and in depth Personal Interview. The

    applicants will be called at the center of their choice (entered while filling up the Application form). The

    centers would be Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Shillong, The Institute reservesthe right to add or cancel any of the venue(s). Institute is considering opening new centers at Guwahati,

    Ahmadabad, Cochin and Srinagar subject to receiving viable number of application for the new centre.33 Will the Applicants be allowed to change the center?

    No. The Applicants are not allowed to change the center. However, in some exceptional/stated conditionsthe change can be permitted.

    34 Will the Documents get verified during the stage 3 process?

    The Applicants are advised to carry the original set of all documents (Academic / Work Experience andOutstanding Achievements) along with the copy of the same (organized and stapled together). The Institute

    may askfor these documents (copy) to be submitted. The photo Identity card (Aadhar card /PAN/ Driving

    license) is absolutely must. Students are advised to carry a latest passport size colored photograph to the

    venue.

    35 What is Stage 4?

    Stage 4 is the internal (back office) process that will collate the marks scored in each of the parameters by

    the applicant and generate the ranks in the merit list for each of the candidate who has appeared for Stage 3process i.e., ever applicant will know his/her SIMSR rank in the merit list.

    36 What is significance of SIMSR rank?

    As stated earlier, the weightage given to the qualifying examination is only 40%, the marks scored in othercomponents are added and the Rank in the order of merit will get generated. Needless, to say the SIMSR

    rank will be the only criterion for the admission to the programme opted for.

    37 What is stage 5?

    Stage 5 is the Counseling Process. The applicants based on his/her SIMSR rank will be called forcounseling at particular date and time. The venue for counseling will be the Institutes Auditorium at

    Mumbai.

    38 What is significance of Counseling Process?

    A candidate most often gets to know about the Institute even before taking the admission. In case, if the

    candidate is eligible for more than one Programme, the advisors (Director/Programme Coordinators/Senior

    Faculties) are available for counseling so the candidate can take informed decisions.

    39 Who are exempted from appearing for Counseling Process?

    The applicant opting only for one programme (while filling the form) and his/her rank merits admission

    Such applicants will be informed accordingly and would be spared from the counseling process..

    40 Will there be separate cut off for each programme?

    SIMSR rank (and not the score in the qualifying examination) determines the admission to the programme

    During the counseling process each of the participants will know the programme wise position. Also, at the

    end of each day, the website will be updated accordingly. Please read the Counseling Process in detailavailable in the Admission Process document.

    41 What is the course structure of all Two Year PG courses?

    Each course is for 6 trimesters of 10-12 weeks each spread over 2 years. Each trimester includes 5-8 full

    credit courses, requiring 30-45 hours of class work/tutorial each, which include case studies andpresentations as well. The course also includes a mandatory summer internship after the first year for 8-10

    weeks in a commercial/social organization to understand the working environment in the corporate world.

    42 Is there any Induction Programme for the students?

    SIMSR has mandatory Induction Programme of two weeks at the beginning of the programme to

    familiarize the students with allied management subjects, especially Data Models, IT, Accounts and

    Economics.

    43 Is the placement assistance provided?

    Yes, placement assistance is provided to the students. A full-fledged External Relations Department helps

    in the placement of the students. Also, there exists a Placement Committee of students for driving the

    placement process. SIMSRs placement record has been excellent since its inception and student findplacements in top organizations.

    44 Does the Programme have an Internship?

    Yes. At the end of First year students will have to undergo live internship project. The External RelationDepartment facilitates the process. The credit is awarded to all the students who complete successfully the

    internship..

    45 How is PGDM FS different from PGDM (Specialization in Finance)?

    PGDM (Finance) and PGDM (Financial Services) both have base of Financial Accounting and FinancialManagement but PGDM (Finance) is generic finance course with a focus on Corporate Finance, while

    PGDM (Financial Services) is a super specialization with a focus on Financial Markets and Financial

    Services.

    46 What do you mean by Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) which is used often to describe

    PGDM-Communication Programme?

    Integrated Marketing Communications is concept used by marketers and communicators to create

    impactful communication. It is based on the concept that to communicate effectively to a particular targetaudience a set of communications tools and techniques can be used-say TV, Magazines, Radio, Outdoor

    and posters for a brand of toilet soap. The overall impact is more than the sum of the parts, therefore

    creating synergy in communication. Integrated Marketing Communications is used to create clarity,consistency and impact for communication.

    47 How is PGDM RM different from PGDM (Specialization in Marketing)?

    Retail Management course is a front end specialization in marketing. The subjects taught are far morespecialized than in the general marketing course. e.g. Sourcing and Merchandizing, Shopper Experience

    Management, Visual Merchandizing, Property Management and Franchising, Category Management

    Retail Finance, Retail Analytics, B2B Retailing, E-retailing, Mall Management, Store Operations andRural Retailing. These are specialized subjects and meant to impart skills in the area of retailing business.

    48 How PGDM-IB and PGDM are different in terms curriculum?

    Two years full-time residential PGDM programme approved by AICTE and accredited by NBA has the

    objective of developing versatile Post Graduates in Management for higher managerial responsibilities invarious industrial and commercial sectors. Students acquire competence in all the functional areas of

    Management and gain an in depth domain knowledge in their chosen area of specialization.

    Two years full-time residential PGDM-IB programme approved by AICTE and accredited by NBA has theobjective of developing versatile Post Graduates in Management with a global mindset for senior

    responsibilities in organisations and industrial/business house and in companies with substantial

    international operations. In addition to developing competence in the various functional areas ofManagement they gain in depth expertise and domain knowledge in the various facets of International

    Business.

    50 Do students need to clear any medical test?

    Yes, after admission, all the students have to undergo medical test

    51 Is lap-top compulsory and included as the part of fee?

    No. Laptop is not included in the fees. But, it is recommended that the students should have their own

    laptop or desktop.

    52 Are there any Scholarships provided to the students?

    No. The institute however acknowledges the star performers during the convocation and awards medal and

    cash prizes to the top three performers.

    53 Is there a Bank Loan assistance provided to the finally selected candidates?

    Yes, SIMSR facilitates the process and provides all necessary documents required by the Bank for

    processing of loan.

    54 Is the Hostel compulsory for the students?

    Yes.

    55 How many students share a room?

    Three Students.

    56 Are the rooms Air-Conditioned?

    No.

    57 Can the Institute change the Admission policy and process?

    Yes. The changes can be essential due to the guidelines by regulatory authorities. As and when changeswill be made, it will be notified on the website. The Institute reserves all the rights to make changes.
