After 3 consecutive years of success for having Youth Leadership Programme, The

Next Generation School (TNG) organised its fourth Youth Leader-ship Programme (YLP) 2017 by creating a platform for students to demonstrate their leadership skills.

The programme spanned over a week starting from March 26 till March 30, where each key stage had been assigned a theme to dem-onstrate participating teams’ leadership skills.

Talk show and drawing com-petition were assigned for key stage 1 where participants eagerly shared their skills in speaking in front of an audience and showcased their talents in arts associated with rea-soning and logical thinking. Key stage 2 was competing in Mathlet-ics where they exhibited Mathletics prowess, while year 5 & 6 students were challenged to unleash their ability in English in “House of Words” competition.

Moreover, quiz, debate and extempore were allocated for Key Stage 3, wherein participants for quiz showed-off their ability to answer questions in time- pres-sured manner. In debate, students strongly expressed their principles about a certain topic which serves as an aid for them to develop more confidence to share their views freely like good leaders do. Like-wise in extempore, candidates delivered their ideas in spur-of-the-moment regarding certain topics.

Several schools in Qatar partic-ipated in various themed rounds to display their leadership and social skills; such as Newton British Acad-emy, American Academy, Al Mahd International School, Middle East International School, Doha British School in Wakra, Doha Modern Indian School, and Pearl School International. Culmination of the event was held during the TNG YLP Grand Finale, on March 30 at TNG Ain Khalid campus.

Undergraduate students gath-ered to present their original research recently as part of

Georgetown University in Qatar’s Middle Eastern Studies Student Association’s (MESSA) fourth inter-national conference.

The event featured students research and discussions by guest speaker under the theme of ‘Power, Influence, and Authority in the Mid-dle East.’ The presentations were followed by a question and answer session. “MESSA’s annual confer-ence provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to showcase their original research and foster academic discussions on a range of topics,” said Dr Christine Schiwietz, MESSA Faculty Adviser and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at GU-Q.

After calling for submissions from undergraduate researchers, the MESSA student board reviewed all papers in order to ensure that only high quality, innovative research was presented on the day.

“It should either be a new excit-ing topic, or something from a new perspective, or it should be that you’ve done very hands-on work,” explained Mohammad Taimur Ali Ahmad (SFS’17), Chair of the MESSA student board. The guest speaker at this year’s event was Jordan Hat-tar, Director of Help4Refugees.org. In a first, scientists have devel-oped a drug activated by light which has therapeutic applica-

tions for the treatment of pain. The new “photo-drug” —

JF-NP-26 — is a molecule that can be specifically activated at any wished moment (that is, with a high spatiotemporal resolution) with light, the researchers said.

“This is the first light-activated drug designed for the treatment of pain in vivo with animal models,” said Francisco Ciruela, Professor at the University of Barcelona.

JF-NP-26 is activated when receiving light -- using an optical fibre -- of a suitable wave length and with an exact precision on the target tissue (brain, skin,

articulations, etc). The drug does not show toxic or unwanted effects even if the dose is high in short-length studies on animals.

The discovery, published in the journal eLife, will overcome the problems faced with the uses and effects of current drugs such as slow and inexact distribution of the drug, lack of spatiotemporal traits in the organism and difficulties in the dose adjustments, the researchers said.

JF-NP-26’s lightening includes a treatment on the molecule that releases the active molecule (raseg-lurant) that blocks the metabotropic glutamate type 5 (mGlu5) receptor, found in lots of neuronal functions such as the spread of neuronal pain.

Blocking this receptor allows preventing the pain from spread-ing into the brain. This can be

produced both due to the outlying neurons and the central nervous system (brain) and create, in both cases, an analgesic effect as a result.

“The molecule created by the action of light, the raseglurant, does

not belong to any group of drugs from the classic anti-pain list of drugs: non-steroidal anti-inflam-matory drugs or NSAID (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.) and opioids,” Ciruela said.

A bowl of fresh fruits a day may lower the risk of devel-oping diabetes by 12 percent,

a study has showed. In individuals with diabetes,

consuming fresh fruit more than three days a week was associated with a 17 percent lower relative risk of dying.

Further, it can lower the risk of developing diabetes-related com-plications affecting large blood vessels — ischaemic heart disease and stroke— and small blood ves-sels — kidney diseases, eye diseases, and neuropathy — by 13-28 pecent, the findings revealed.

Although the health benefits of diets including fresh fruit and veg-etables are well established, the relatively high sugar content of fruit has led to uncertainty about asso-ciated risks of diabetes and of vascular complications of the dis-ease, said Huaidong Du of the University of Oxford.

This has led to frequent absten-tion from fruit consumption among individuals with diabetes in many parts of the world, he noted in the paper published in the journal

PLOS Medicine. The study, which assessed nearly 500,000 people from China, also showed that peo-ple who reported elevated consumption of fresh fruit had an estimated 0.2 percent reduction in the absolute risk of diabetes over

five years. In addition, higher con-sumption of fresh fruit in people with diabetes, led to the decrease in mortality risk of 1.9 percent at five years, and lower risks of micro-vascular and macrovascular complications.

Researchers have identified 26 new genes linked to intellectual disability

which is characterised by signif-icant limitations in learning.

More than one in 100 chil-dren worldwide is affected by intellectual disability. Frequently, intellectual disability also accompanies symptoms of autism spectrum disorders, and many genes have been found to be shared by the two illnesses.

The study could eventually lead to personalised treatments for affected individuals, and also add to our growing knowledge of brain development and func-tioning. “Knowing the genes involved is a big step forward, but understanding how they function is also crucial before we can start planning treatments or even cures,” said team leader John Vincent from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Canada.

FOOD THURSDAY 13 APRIL 201710

Becky Krystal The Washington Post

I am an unapologetic Anglo-phile: “Downton Abbey” marathon watcher. Jane Austen action figure on my desk. Believer that everything

sounds better with a British accent. But, oh, the tea.I’m not just talking about a

properly brewed cuppa - though even that, by some accounts, is los-ing ground to coffee - delightful and rejuvenating as it is.

What I’m referring to is after-noon tea, that convivial tradition of scones, sandwiches and pastries that bridges the hungry gap between lunch and dinner.

British Scones17 to 20 two-inch bunsThese scones are chockablock

with dried currants, but the scones are just as nice without them. You’ll need a 2-inch biscuit cutter. If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can quickly work the butter into the flour mixture by hand or with a pas-try cutter.

Serve with - what else? - clot-ted cream and jam.

MAKE AHEAD: The dough needs to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. The scones are best eaten freshly baked, but the rounds of dough can be refrigerated over-night or individually wrapped (unbaked or baked) in plastic wrap and frozen in a zip-top bag for up

to a month or two. Defrost before baking or reheating; for the latter, tent loosely with aluminum foil and warm through in a 350-degree oven. Adapted from Shael Mead, head pastry chef at London’s Ham Yard Hotel.

Ingredients584 grams (about 4 cups) flour,

plus more as needed84 grams (1/4 cup plus 2 table-

spoons) sugar36 grams (2 tablespoons) bak-

ing powder113 grams (8 tablespoons; 1

stick) chilled, unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

143 grams (about 1 cup) dried currants (optional)

250 grams (about 1 cup) whole

milk, plus more for brushing162 grams (about 3/4 cup) heavy

creamStepsCombine the flour, sugar and

baking powder in the bowl of a stand mixer or handheld electric mixer. Beat on low speed just to blend. Add the chilled butter; beat on low speed for 4 or 5 minutes, until the mixture starts to look crumbly with some large chunks. Stop to scrape down the bowl.

Add the currants, if using; beat on low speed until evenly distrib-uted. Pour in the milk and heavy cream; beat on low speed for sev-eral seconds, just until the liquids are incorporated, to form a soft dough. Lightly flour a work surface. Transfer the dough there and pat it to an even thickness of about 1 inch. Cover loosely with a clean kitchen towel; let it rest for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone liner. Flour the edges of your biscuit cut-ter, then use it to cut out 17 to 20 scones (straight down, without twisting), arranging them at least 1 inch apart on the baking sheet as you work and re- flouring the cut-ter each time. Try to reroll the scraps no more than once as the subsequent rounds of dough may not rise as much in the oven.

Lightly brush the tops of the scones with milk. Bake (middle rack) for about 16 minutes, turning the sheet from front to back half-way through, until lightly golden. Transfer them to a wire rack to cool for a few minutes before serving, or cool completely before storing.

The yet-untitled Tamil remake of Vikas Bahl directed critically acclaimed

Hindi drama “Queen”, which was supposed to feature Tamannaah Bhatia in the role originally played by Kangana Ranaut, has been shelved, a source said.

“It is true that the project has been dropped. The exact reason remains a mystery. Tamannaah was supposed to commence work from July. She has been asked to go ahead with her other commit-ments,” the source from the film’s unit said. Well-known actress-filmmaker Revathi was to direct the remake while Suhasini Mani Ratnam was in charge of the dia-logues. Tamannaah was excited to be part of the project when she signed it last year.

“Ever since I saw ‘Queen’, I wanted to be part of its remake though I wasn’t sure if it will be remade. What makes ‘Queen’ spe-cial is that it’s one of those rare women-centric films which suc-ceeded in reaching out to everybody, across all sections,” Tamannaah had said.

Grammy Award-winning singer Ed Sheeran has struck a deal to end a £14m copyright infringement lawsuit brought by two song-

writers over his hit track “Photograph”.This week, a judge in California announced that

Sheeran and the two songwriters — Martin Har-rington and American Thomas Leonard — had reached an agreement and the case was being dis-missed. The judge did not make public details of the settlement.

Mirror.co.uk had contacted Sheeran’s repre-sentative for comment. Harrington and Leonard sued the singer last June, claiming “Photograph” was a “verbatim, note-for-note copying” of their song “Amazing”, which was recorded by “The X Factor” winner Matt Cardle in 2012.

In their legal documents, they said: “The simi-larities go beyond substantial, which is itself sufficient to establish copyright infringement and

are in fact striking.” They continued to allege that Sheeran and his songwriting partner Johnny McDaid had “copied and exploited, without authorisation or credit, the work of other active, professional songwriters on a breathtaking scale”.

According to a report in Tech Crunch yesterday, users can also request payments from the group right within their chat. Users can enter the amount they want to

“Payments is an area of Face-book’s business that hasn’t received as much focus over the years, despite the social network’s poten-tial to collect and store payment data for its sizable user base,” the

report stated. Facebook had intro-duced person-to-person payments within Messenger in early 2015. Now the decision to expand the fea-ture to group payments coincides the time when Facebook is rumoured to be preparing the launch of a digital payments busi-ness in India within its other messaging app, WhatsApp.

Software giant Microsoft has finally said goodbye to 10-year-old Windows Vista

operating system that had debuted with severe criticism.

The users of Windows Vista will have to move to a more recent version of Windows to remain secure.

“Codenamed Longhorn, Win-dows Vista was originally supposed to revolutionise Win-dows with a new file system and user interface. Microsoft’s devel-opment of Longhorn spiralled out of control, and the company was forced to reset its plans,” the report noted. The deathknell for Vista was blown since last year when Firefox indicated it would support the obsolete OS until next September.
