EXPERIMENT 2

Title : Wiring of main circuit, Ceiling Fan and Dimmer

Objective : To give understanding and skills in wiring of ceiling fan and light dimmer from distribution fused board (DFB).

Apparatus / materials

: 1 ceiling fan terminal connector (terminal connector), 1 distribution board (DFB),1 light dimmer, 1 lamp holder, 1 AC ammeter, 1 ceiling fan regulator, 1 multimeter and wiring accessories.

Methods a ) Redo the wiring of main circuit as given in figure 1 of experiment 1.

b) Do wiring connection as given in figure 1 below using laboratory tools provided... Use suitable size of cable (recommended cable size for ceiling fan and lighting circuit is 1.50 mm2)

c) After completing wiring work, do continuity test using multimeter to measure the resistance between the following points:

i ) Between point E of DFB and point E of ceiling fan connector. = Ω

ii ) Between point N of DFB and point N of ceiling fan connector. = Ω

iii ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “OFF” position...

= Ω

iv ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “ON” position.and adjuster of regulator at position 1.

= Ω

v ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “ON” position.and adjuster of regulator at position 2.

= Ω

vi ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “ON” position.and adjuster of regulator at position 3.

= Ω

vii ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “ON” position.and adjuster of regulator at position 4.

= Ω

viii ) Between point L of DFB and point L of ceiling fan connector when one-way switch in the “ON” position.and adjuster of regulator at FULL position.

= Ω

d ) After completing continuity tests, connect ceiling fan to it’s terminal connector and fit the bulb onto lamp holder. All switch must be in the “OFF” position including the switch in DFB. With the approval and help from lecturer / technician incharge, connect power supply to DFB.

With one-way switch in the ON position, measure and record the voltage between L terminal and N terminal of ceiling fan terminal connector using multimeter when :

i ) Regulator adjuster at position 0 = V

ii ) Regulator adjuster at position 1 = V

iii ) Regulator adjuster at position 2 = V

iv ) Regulator adjuster at position 3 = V

v ) Regulator adjuster at position 4 = V

vi ) Regulator adjuster at position FULL = V

e ) carry out and observe the followings:

i ) Observe that the brightness of the bulb is increasing when dimmer controller is turned slowly in clockwise direction.

ii ) Observe that the brightness of the bulb is decreasing when dimmer controller is turned slowly in anti-clockwise direction.

Obtain 3 ammeter reading when dimmer controller is turned slowly in clockwise direction :

i ) First reading = A

ii ) Second reading = A

iii) Third reading = A
