Waverly Hills Sanatorium Location: Louisville K entucky

Waverly Hills is well known for being the final resting place for patients suffering from Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis was a wide spread epidemic in the early 1900’s. Waverly Hills opened its doors as a facility for these patients to recover in seclusion and isolation from the outside world. Tuberculosis did not discriminate against age, gender or race. There were many patients, children and adults, residing within its walls. Doctors and nurses performed may types of treatments to “cure” their patients. Some of the treatments were a good diet, fresh open air, sunlamps and surgical treatments. Perhaps the most horrific history of Waverly Hills was the transportation of the bodies out of the facility. The staff did not want to dampen their patient’s spirits by carting off dead bodies in front of them so they came up with an alternate plan. These bodies were sent down a tunnel to a waiting hearse or train. This tunnel became known as the “body chute.” Waverly Hills closed its doors in 1961 after the invention of an antibiotic to cure tuberculosis. What was left behind were the spirits of those who passed and those who cared for them.

Location: County Offaly, Ireland Leap Castle has a very violent and bloody history. In 1532 a fierce rivalry pitted brother against brother. While brother number one, a priest, was holding Mass in the castle’s chapel, brother number two burst in and stabbed him with a sword. According to legend, the priest died on the alter in front of his family. This chapel is referred to as the “bloody chapel.” The bloodshed continued as many people were tortured and killed in the castle throughout the years. In 1900 a gruesome discovery was made. While workers were restoring the castle they found a ubliet. This was a dungeon with a floor that dropped 8 feet onto a sharp spike. These workers found skeletons on top of skeletons.

Location: Cape Town, South Africa The Cape Town Castle is the oldest

building still standing in South Africa. It was built in 1652 by Commander Jan van Riebeeck. It was used as a resting place for ships and sailors making long voyages. Commander van Riebeeck designed the castle as a fortress with five sides

When the Dutch and the British first occupied South Africa they used it as a prison. These prisoners were tortured and sometimes killed. Prisoners were sent to cells with no outside light. They called them “Die Donker Gat,” meaning “the Dark Hole.” It was in these cells where the prisoners were tortured.

Location: North Head, Manly, Australia Originally built in 1828, Quarantine Station

(named in 1832) was similar to the US’s Ellis Island with some major differences. Quarantine Station got it’s name from the Quarantine Act of 1832. It was used as a stopping point for immigrants to Australia and to stop the spread of incoming diseases. Some of these diseases were smallpox, cholera, and Spanish influenza.

Unfortunately all immigrants were isolated at Quarantine Station for months whether they were sick or healthy. Many, many immigrants died of disease that spread rapidly throughout the Station. Others were “washed” in showers with extremely hot water mixed with chemicals to kill lice. These “showers” would cause the first layer of skin to peel off.

Location: La Falda, Cordoba, Argentina The Eden Hotel was built in 1899 by traveler

Roberto Bahlke. He built a grand hotel that was state-of –the-art for its time period. Interestingly, throughout the years, it has a rich World War Two and German history.

In 1912 two German bothers, Walter and Bruno Eichorn purchased the hotel. Throughout the years , many well known people stayed at the Eden such as, Albert Einstein and the Prince of Wales.

In 1939, at the start of World War Two, the crew of the sunken battleship, Graf Spee, sought shelter at the hotel. In 1945 the Argentinean government allowed Japanese diplomats and their families to hide out at the hotel in seclusion for two years. There is also speculation that Adolf Hitler faked suicide and spent his final years at the Eden Hotel.

The hotel lost it’s luster in 1964 and laid in ruins over the years. In 1988 it was declares a Historical Monument and is in the process of being restored.

Location: Aokigahara, Japan This dark and lush forest bordering Mt. Fuji

has gained the reputation as "the perfect place to die” and the “suicide forest.” Many bodies are found each year in the forest with a record amount in 2006.

While walking into the forest there are many signs posted reading, “ Please Reconsider” and “Please consult Police before you decide to die!” Old pictures and cut up credit cards are often found in the forest as well.

Locals believe suicidal individuals choose this forest due to it’s thickness. Sound does not carry in this forest. Some even believe that just simply entering this forest give a person suicidal thoughts due to the negative energy created by the number of suicides in the forest each year.

I really enjoyed this project. Not only do I enjoy reading about the paranormal, I also enjoy paranormal investigating. I have been to many beautiful and scary places over the last 4 years with my group, Indiana SPI (scientific paranormal investigators).

I have made a few power points the last year or so but never a non-linear power point. What a useful tool for teaching in the future. My kids, ages 11 and 8, enjoyed navigating through my power point.

I did have some a-ha moments while working on this project. My first a-ha moment was realizing that hyperlinking was not as difficult as I imagined it would be. After a while, I did get the hang of it. I was also pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed creating this power point. That was a great a- ha moment! Stopping at 3 a-ha moments, I would have to say that realizing how useful this would be in the classroom was eye opening. A non-linear power point could be used as a studying tool for math, spelling, reading, and so on. I will definitely use these tools when I have my own classroom full of eager learners.
