WEST FLORIDA WOMEN’S GOLF CRACKS TOP 20 IN LATEST POLL

Argonauts improve five spots overall to No. 17

NEW YORK, N.Y. – A strong start to the spring season has been recognized by head coaches around the nation as the West Florida women’s golf team jumped five spots in the first Golf World/WGCA Division II College Women’s Coaches Poll of the spring Wednesday. The Argonauts improved to No. 17 in the nation, up from No. 22 at the end of the fall season. UWF is fresh off a fourth place finish at the Lady Moc Golf Classic yester-

day where it outplayed most of the 17 team field and finished ahead of six ranked programs, including five that remain among the top 15 in the na-tion. The result followed a third place showing by the Argonauts during the first week of February at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, where they similarly finished ahead of five teams ranked higher than them at the time. The Argonauts leapfrogged five spots in the poll despite only having one tournament under their belt when the

voting period ended on Feb. 22. Their finish at the Lady Moc Golf Classic will not be considered until the next poll. Leading West Florida through the first two tournaments of the spring is freshman Elin Olsson (Mantorp, Swe-den/Bildningscentrum Facetten), who notched the first two top 10 finishes of her career. She tied for eighth at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate before tying for seventh at the Lady Moc Golf Classic to pace UWF at both events.

Through five tournaments in both the fall and spring that does not include the Lady Moc Golf Classic, (Camila Sevillano Cali, Colombia/La Arbo-leda) leads West Florida in scoring average with 77.30 strokes per round. Olsson is exactly a stroke behind her, averaging 78.30. West Florida resumes play next week at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Springs, Fla. Hello, friends! Well, our deer seasons have come and gone, and I hope all of you have had a great year. Now, for some of us we will start going through withdrawals until the fall, but for others we will start now preparing for next year. Now is a good time to do some after-the-season scout-

ing for those big bucks we didn’t get this year and to cut out shoot-ing ranges and look for places to put new stands for next year. With that said, some of us just finished our late muzzleloaders’ season and even with the bad, windy weather some nice bucks and quite a few hogs were taken. One buck in particular, a nice 10-pointer, was

taken on Eglin near Eg-lin Roads 213 and 212. This buck was taken at 5:00 p.m. one afternoon and also quite a few hogs were taken. Now, speaking of hogs, their numbers have re-ally exploded recently, both on public and pri-vate land. In Florida, you can hunt feral hogs all year long in many places. These hogs can do a lot of damage

to food plots and deer feeders. They can also tear up gardens and ter-rorize family pets, along with running off most of the deer and turkeys in an area. Some of these hogs make excellent ta-ble meat. I recommend a young shoat or sow. I do not suggest the old boars or sows with pigs. If you happen to get a barr – a boar that has been cut – then you

will have excellent eat-ing. If hunting these ani-mals interests you, be very careful. They can be extremely aggres-sive, but it will help you pass the time until spring turkey season. Good luck to all of you and may God bless.

Argos Hold Tight At No. 2 In First Regular-Season ITA Poll UWF holds on to national rank-ing in first release during the spring regular season

SKILMMAN, N.J. – The No. 2 West Florida men’s tennis team held on to its national ranking in the first regular-season Intercollegiate Ten-nis Association poll of the spring. The Argonauts (5-0, 4-0 Gulf South Conference) remain undefeated on the season after a pair of matches against nationally-ranked oppo-nents was canceled last weekend. The top nine teams in the rankings stayed the same. UWF was scheduled to play No. 1

Armstrong Feb. 22 in a rematch of the 2012 NCAA Finals match, but the match was canceled due to in-clement weather. The Argos’ match against No. 6 Rollins, scheduled for Feb. 23, was postponed to March 3 for the same reason. UWF is 4-0 in conference play, outscoring GSC opponents 33-3. The Argos only win against a ranked opponent is against then-ranked No. 13 Valdosta State, 7-2. VSU dropped to No. 24 in the latest rankings UWF will play three neutral site matches in Valdosta, Ga, this week. The Argos will play No. 4 Barry at 10 a.m. ET March 1, No. 3 Lynn

March 2 at 10 a.m. ET and No. 6 Rollins March 3 at a time to be de-termined. Two other GSC teams were ranked in the top 50. West Alabama fell from No. 34 to No. 39, and Delta State dropped from No. 38 to No. 42 The first set of regular-season rankings did not include individual or doubles rankings. No. 5 Bruno Savi (Santana do Livramento, Bra-zil/Auburn Montgomery) and No. 13 Kevin Ducros (Aix-en-Provence, France) hold on to their preseason national rankings, as do doubles tandems No. 6 Ducros and Tony Ra-

jaobelina (Orleans, France/Univer-sity of Montpellier) and No. 13 Savi and Elio Latela (Sydney, Australia/Sydney Seconday College). The first set of individual, dou-bles and team regional rankings are scheduled to be released March 20, while the first set of individual, doubles and team national rankings are scheduled to be released March 27.
