StrengtheningFamilies-TheFiveProtectiveFactorsTheFiveProtectiveFactorsare the foundationof theStrengtheningFamiliesapproach.Extensiveevidencesupportsthecommon-sensenotionthat,whentheseProtectiveFactorsarepresentandrobustinafamily,thelikelihood of abuse and neglect diminish. Research also shows that these factors help build a healthyenvironment for the optimal development of all children. TheNorth Suburban Child and Family ResourceNetworkfollowstheStrengtheningFamiliesframework.ParentalResilienceNoone can eliminate stress fromparenting, but buildingparental resilience can affect howaparent dealswith stress.Parental resilience is theability to constructively copewithandbounceback fromall typesofchallenges. It is about creatively solving problems, building trusting relationships, maintaining a positiveattitude, andseekinghelpwhenitisneeded.SocialConnectionsFriends, family members, neighbors, and other members of a community provide emotional support andconcreteassistancetoparents.Socialconnectionshelpparentsbuildnetworksofsupportthatservemultiplepurposes:theycanreinforcepositivenormsandchildrearing, provideassistanceintimesofneed, andserveasa resource forparenting informationorhelp solvingproblems.Because social isolation, often stemmingfrom domestic violence or other issues, is a common risk factor for abuse and neglect, parents who areisolatedneedsupportinbuildingpositivefriendships.ConcreteSupportinTimesofNeedParentsneedaccess to the typesofconcretesupportsandservices thatcanminimize thestressofdifficultsituations, such as a family crisis, a condition such as substance abuse, or stress associated with lack ofresources.BuildingthisProtectiveFactorisabouthelpingtoensurethebasicneedsofafamily, suchasfood, clothing, and shelter, aremet, aswell as connectingparents and children to services, especially those thathavestigmasassociatedwiththem, likedomesticviolenceorsubstanceabusecounseling, intimesofcrisis.KnowledgeofParentingandChildDevelopmentHaving accurate information about raising young children and appropriate expectations for their behaviorhelp parents better understand and care for children. It is important that information is available whenparents need it and that it is relevant to their life and their child. Parentswhose own families usedharshdiscipline techniques or parents of children with developmental or behavioral problems or special needsofferrequireextrainformationandsupport.SocialandEmotionalCompetenceofChildrenAchild’sabilitytointeractpositivelywithothers,toself-regulate,andtoeffectivelycommunicatehisorheremotionshasagreatimpactontheparent-childrelationship.Childrenwithchallengingbehaviorsaremorelikely tobeabused, soearly identificationandworkwith themhelpskeep theirdevelopmenton trackandkeep them safe. Also, childrenwho have experienced orwitnessed violence need a safe environment thatoffersopportunitiestodevelopnormally.
