New high school in EalingHundreds of parents are backing the opening of a new high school in Ealing amid a 'worrying' shortage of secondary places in the borough. The Ealing Fields Free School is being planned for September 2015 and has already gained overwhelming support from the local community. It comes as booming birth rates create a critical need for more state secondary schools in South Ealing and Northfields. Ealing will be 585 secondary places short by 2016 and 1,142 by 2019. Ealing Fields Free School – aimed at 11 to 18-year-olds – plans to stretch pupils with high academic expectations as well as provide a wide range of enrichment activities. The proposed state school – whose steering group comprises local parents and teachers – will follow the national curriculum, be Ofsted inspected and employ qualified teachers. Hundreds of people have already registered their interest and the group is urging more parents to sign up to help the school's chances of success. It plans to submit its bid to the Department of Education in September. Dr Judith Mortell, an educational psychologist and leader of the steering group, said: 'Parents in South Ealing and Northfields want their children to be educated locally, within the local community, alongside the friends and neighbours that they grew up with. They want their children to attend schools that are ambitious and successful and they want to be able to choose from local school options, not to be allocated a school on the other side of the borough to which they would have to pass other schools to get to.'

A public meeting about the school is planned the Navasartian centre, Northfields Avenue, Ealing, on Tuesday, July 2. Speakers will include Dr Mortell and Professor Guy Claxton who is backing its opening. Sessions start at 7 pm and 8.30pm.

World Breastfeeding WeekThe 2013 WABA World Breastfeeding Week takes place 1-7 August, with this year’s theme Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers. The week concentrates on Breastfeeding Peer Counselling, highlighting the fact that even when mothers are able to get off to a good start, all too often in the weeks or

months after delivery there is a sharp decline in breastfeeding rates, particularly in exclusive breastfeeding. Continued support to sustain breastfeeding can be provided in a variety of ways, including Peer Counsellors who are trained to support mothers. World Breastfeeding Week aims to draw attention to the importance of Peer Support, as well as training breastfeeding supporters, identifying local community support contacts for breastfeeding mothers and calling on governments globally to implement steps to improve the duration and rates of breastfeeding. Isis Education Centre in Hyde ParkThe Isis Education Centre at The LookOut, Hyde Park is a unique, eco-friendly building, set in an acre of enclosed grounds. Opened in autumn 2011, the Centre’s gardens include a sunshine pond with underwater cameras, a butterfly bank and mini-beast area. With a living brown roof and even spaces for bats to roost in the eaves, it is the perfect base for

outdoor learning. The Royal Parks Foundation is running a range of inspiring activity days for children and families at the Centre throughout the summer, offering children the chance to discover nature in the heart of London.

Activity Days will run every Tuesday throughout the school holidays. Book now for children from 7-11 years old to spend a fully supervised day playing games, getting muddy and exploring habitats and mini-beasts. On Thursdays, parents can join the fun and book their place to spend a couple of hours with their children learning about the ecology of the Royal Parks. To get a taster of the range of activities on offer, the Isis Education Centre also runs Discovery Days every Wednesday, where families can drop in without having to book.

This year, teenagers (11-16 years old) have the opportunity to spend a week at the Isis Education Centre in August with Outdoor Escape. Over five days, they will have the chance to learn bush craft and pond dipping, look for bats, go swimming, rowing and horse riding and find out more about the native small mammals and moths in Hyde Park. They even have the chance to stay over on the Friday night!

Celebrate London's transportThere's fun to be had this summer as London Transport Museum invites families to join in their 150th anniversary celebrations in and around London. Visitors will have the chance to admire and ride on locomotives dating back to the Victorian times, including the recently restored Metropolitan Locomotive No 1, Jubilee Carriage No 353, and the 1890s Metropolitan Jubilee 353 coach. Smaller visitors can take part in family fun activities on the day.

The 150th anniversary celebrations are sponsored by Cubic Transport Systems, Siemens and CBS Outdoor, while the Jubilee Carriage No 353 was restored with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and London Transport Museum Friends.

Heritage vehicle outings will take place on 3, 4 and 7 August at London Transport Museum at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, and 31 August at London Transport Museum at Neasden Depot.

The anniversary celebrations will continue throughout August at the Covent Garden Museum where accompanied children get in free. New pool in central London SwimWay has now added a new pool to its list of places where children can have swimming lessons. The new facility is located in Central London/Bloomsbury (WC1E 7HY) at ULC (University of London Union). It is the largest swimming pool in central London, measuring 33.3m x 11.5m and has a maximum depth of 3.40m.

New agency is turning the nation’s grannies into babysitters

A baby girl who missed her Italian grandmother is the inspiration behind a new London-based babysitting service which is turning grannies into Granny babysitters. Mum and Daughter Fran and Grazia decided to set up Granny and I, the first childcare agency in the UK to focus solely on employing grannies, after realising how much easier life with Fran’s baby girl Penny was when granny Grazia was visiting. “Penny loved being looked after by her grandmother and I found being able to rely on my mother’s experience and advice invaluable – so much so that when she returned to Italy, we both felt utterly bereft. I always felt more on the ball when granny was here and I knew other mums felt the same” explains Fran.Granny and I find families a Granny babysitter for evening, daytime and weekend babysitting; they are the only agency to send a short video of the Granny so the family can ‘meet’ her before the booking. Where learning’s a ball

As soon as you find out which school your child is going to this September, it’s time to start preparing. Forget force feeding them phonics, this is about getting your child ready for the social challenges of school. The more prepared they are, the easier they will settle and the more they’ll get out of those early days.

1. Can they dress themselves? Imagine the scene. One teacher faced

with thirty children and their coats. By the time each child is zipped up and wrapped up, playtime is over. If your child is able to go some way to helping, they may get some fresh air.

If you can see buttons on trousers and skirts becoming a problem during the post PE change, invest in elasticated waistbands. These will also help during any ‘last minute’ toilet visits. Avoid tights in the early days – they can also lead to unnecessary bathroom accidents. With shoes, laces and buckles are a no-no. Stick to Velcro fastenings which your child can do themselves.

2. Are they used to sharing? Sharing is a difficult lesson for a child to

learn, especially if they only start learning it at school. But it’s a vital lesson if you want your child to settle in and make friends easily. No one wants to play with the boy who refuses to take turns and share, and before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing his bag of figures or his last few sweets.

3. Can they use the toilet on their own? Reception classrooms usually have a

toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. That can mean less confident children avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to

build up their confidence. Remind them that hand washing is part of the ‘visit’. Beginning school toilet training now will mean less accidents in September.

4. Are they able to eat independently? Lunchtimes can be a real flashpoint in

the early days of your child’s school life. Dinner halls are noisy places and can make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they arrive at school able to pick up and use a knife and fork. If they’re opting for a packed lunch, make sure they can open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box and unpeel a banana. With school a few months off, it may seem like the easier option to feed them, but it won’t help in the long run. Practice, however painful, makes perfect.

5. Can they recognise their name? If your child can recognise their name,

they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom and find their cardigan if it gets misplaced. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control.

6. Can they use scissors? Teachers look for this in the early stages

of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months.

7. Do they understand discipline? It’s important your child understands

what’s expected of them when they arrive at school. They need to know hitting, kicking, biting and hair pulling will not be tolerated. Not only will it bring your child to the attention of the head teacher for all the wrong reasons, but it will make your child unpopular with their classmates. Reputations earned in the early days of school tend to stick and can be hard to shake off.

8. Can they communicate with an adult? Giving your child the skills to

communicate with their teacher means they will be able to have some control. How else will they ask to go to the toilet? If they don’t understand how to get the attention of an adult, how will they let their teacher know they don’t understand their work? A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up. Encourage your child to ask and even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most appropriate way of getting a grown ups attention.

9. Are they able to count? If your child is about to count up to 20,

and count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes and get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence and help them see learning as fun. Plus it’s a great way to get one of their 5 a day down them!

10. Can they follow simple instructions? The school day is full of instructions.

Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms and sit cross legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions and encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.

Summer holidays bring excitement and adventure. Students look forward to their days off, knowing the long months will offer respite from their school year. What they do not understand is that whilst those days may relax and energise, they can also stress them academically. Summer learning loss, also known as the summer slide, can occur quickly during the summer. Recent studies published through a management tracking information system utilized by over 22,000 schools throughout the UK, indicate many students can go an entire summer without even picking up a book. This can be extremely detrimental to a child’s learning progress.

When children mentally go on holiday for the summer, they are often at risk of losing one to three months of education with some dropping behind by as much as two to four national curriculum points. These students enter the classroom in the autumn term significantly behind their classmates. This makes it challenging for educators to meet the needs of their students. As a parent though, you have the ability to minimise that academic loss.

Surviving the Summer Slide

Support Learning at HomeLearning begins in the home but parents do not have to be educators to support that learning; you can do so by extending your children’s summer activities. Have them find a book about the play they are studying at drama camp. Participation in a summer football or rugby camp can be turned into a journaling activity. Maths can be practised through a trip to the grocery store. Turn any experience into a learning opportunity.

Support Learning Through the LibraryReading is arguably one of the most important components of your children’s education. Local libraries present opportunities to participate in reading programmes, group discussions, or other literacy events. Use your local library to find grade level appropriate books and activities.

Support Learning Through Summer ProgrammesSometimes though, children need more support than can be received at home. Between your work hours, a lack of resources or simply not knowing where to focus, you can be overwhelmed. If that occurs, reach out to an established summer school programme. Learning is directed in a setting with real, live teaching, as opposed to in front of computer screens, and in small classes that allow your child to receive individualized instruction. Enrolling your children in a vibrant and authentic programme may be the perfect opportunity to revise learning from the previous school year, extend learning and prepare for future challenges such as entrance exams.

1. SlEEp OutdOOrS: nothing says ‘summer’ like the chance to kip outside. If you can, find a campsite where you can go for a few days; but if you can’t get away, put up a tent in the garden. No tent? Borrow one. You’ll be amazed at the amount of fun kids can have with a few torches under canvas. Make sure they have lots of snacks – and don’t forget the singsongs!

2. FiNd a gEOCaChE: geocaching is like a treasure hunt where you use a GPS device to find a container which will have some small items (maybe toys) inside. It’s fun, exciting, and there’s lots to learn (about orienteering, geography, exploration, the environment). For more information see www.geocaching.com

3. gO Wild SWimmiNg: swimming in rivers and lakes may sound an experience not a learning activity – but swimming in a natural environment helps kids learn about nature, and it’s a totally different experience from swimming in a pool, even an outdoor one. 4. Climb a trEE: there’s so much to learn in tree-climbing: how to deal with the unexpected, how to trust your own judgement, how to take a risk and how to manage failure. You learn that it’s harder to come down than to go up, and you learn how to look after your friend who falls out of the tree. And they’re all life skills that are useful for ever.

5. Fly a kitE: gem up on wind direction, find a suitable open space, and make or invest in a kite. Read up online on how to launch a kite, and go for it! You’ll get a tremendous sense of satisfaction as your kite dances across the sky.

6. haVE a trEaSurE huNt: there are loads of different ways to run a treasure hunt, so read up on the different methods online. It’s all down to good planning, so don’t stint on that: you’ll spend more time on planning than on the event itself. As a rough rule of thumb, kids can manage twice as many clues as their age.

7. makE a mOViE: with the arrival of the iPhone and the iPad, it’s never been easier to make a (surprisingly professional) home movie. Choose your location, put together your storyboard and...action! There are various apps that can make filming easier (eg filmic pro, which locks the camera’s settings for the duration of a shot).

8. build a dEN: it’s come to symbolise childhood freedom, and there’s little doubt it’s an activity children (and their parents) absolutely love. Dens are best built in woods, but even a small garden or a bedroom will do as a venue. The secret is to allow your child to let his/her imagination run wild (and not worry too much about the tidying up afterwards).

9. ridE a hOrSE: some kids are pony-mad, but even those who don’t do regular lessons usually love at least the occasional chance to ride. Look up a riding school and see what they can offer in terms of a one-off experience; ideally, you’ll want to go too.

10. FiNd yOur Way uSiNg a map aNd COmpaSS: whether you’re in a city or the country, whether it’s somewhere you know or somewhere new to you, there’s loads to learn from this. It’s tricky to work out the compass points, so a good activity to do en famille; also great to acclimatise children with maps and their usefulness.

11. traCk Wild aNimalS: again this is something that can be done in the outback, the local park, or your back garden. Your children are looking for signs that animals have been here: pawprints, claw marks, scuff marks and – most fascinating of all for most kids – poo.

12. CatCh a FiSh: if you’re new to fishing, use a net. Find water that’s clean and clear, and where you can see there are lots of fish. Then be patient, and ready to pounce.

13. idENtiFy Wild FlOWErS: there are so many beautiful wild flowers, and it feels knowledgeable when you know what’s what. Choose an area rich in wild foliage, and take a book or leaflet with you to help you with identification.

14. COOk ON a CampFirE: sausages and marshmallows are the obvious contenders – but you can be more ambitious than that! You can cook anything on a campfire. Try frying eggs, grilling fish, warming burritos, making risotto. Kids will eat things they’d never eat at home when they’ve been whizzed up on a campfire.

15. gO bird WatChiNg: if you’ve never done it, and know little about birds, the best thing to do is go to an RSPB sanctuary. Take your binoculars, read the guides, and use the hides.

16. build a raFt: there are courses in raft-building; but there are also instructions (on the internet). It takes time, and teamwork, and effort; but there’s nothing like the feeling of finding it floats!

17. idENtiFy at lEaSt tEN CONStEllatiONS: invest in a good chart, wait for a dark night, keep your eyes peeled. You get a huge sense of satisfaction, and awe, when you manage to do it.

18. makE a Family trEE: learning about your family history is a fascinating way to put flesh on the bones of history lessons. What’s more, grandparents and great-aunts and uncles won’t always be around to fill you in – so ask the questions now.

19. Start a COllECtiON: it can be anything – football cards, postcards, photographs of funfairs you’ve visited, pebbles from beaches you’ve been to. You can collect experiences as well as items: keep a book where you short review of every film you watch, every book you read, or a description of every day out you have. Collections aren’t about WHAT they are, they’re about learning to organise your thoughts in a coherent, logical way.

20. lEarN a gOOd Card Or magiC triCk: it takes practice, but it’s enormous fun and if you get good at your trick, you really can surprise people (especially visitors). It’s part-performance, part-agility, part-confidence; all useful skills for every child.

Save on summer with childcare voucherMore parents now realise their childcare vouchers – which many people used to think were just for nursery fees – are actually a brilliantly flexible money-saving option all year long. Childcare vouchers are a tax-free salary sacrifice offered by employers to help ease childcare costs for staff who are also parents. And far from being just a bonus for paying nursery fees, they can actually be used for a huge range of childcare options for children all the way up to 15. In these difficult times, it’s a saving which UK mums and dads are grasping gratefully.

Britain’s biggest dedicated childcare voucher provider, Computershare Voucher Services (CVS), say they’ve spotted smarter parents storing up vouchers outside of the school term. Research carried out by CVS of the over 100,000 working parents who use its vouchers shows parents now using them much more in the summer. Only a third of parents did not realise they could use their childcare vouchers for activities outside traditional childcare. These include holiday camps, activity clubs and music lessons. Many popular adventure holidays also accept childcare vouchers including organisations like PGL and Camp Beaumont. It’s always worth asking. “Childcare vouchers are far more versatile than some parents realise,” explains Julian Foster, managing director of CVS. “This means lots of families may be missing out on vital savings by failing to take advantage of their many uses.”

Childcare vouchers are completely free of tax and National Insurance. Depending on individual circumstances, childcare vouchers can bring savings of up to £1,866 per family every year. To use childcare vouchers, a parent must work for an employer who offers a scheme.

Yippee! It’s the break we’ve all been dreaming of and looking forward to through the dank winter and spring months – here comes this year’s summer holiday. Hands up who remembers when it was just you and your beloved, grabbing a cheap deal, filling a backpack at the last minute and heading for the sun? Those were the good old days... Now you’re a family, there’s a third ‘p’ to add to ‘passport and packing’ – ‘planning’.

BEFORE YOU GO• Label your child’s clothes, towels and

backpacks, especially if you will be using kids’ clubs – they WILL go missing. Labels 4 Kids (www.labels4kids.com/fam) and Easy 2 Name (www.easy2name.com) both stock packs of instant labels so the job’s a breeze and it’s a much cheaper solution than replacing lost items. They also have ID wristbands so you can label the children with your contact details

• Use Google Street View with the children to look round your planned location and help get familiarised with the landscape, ‘foreign’ signs and local attractions. You can also use it to create a list of places to visit

• Photocopy everyone's passport and keep the copies in a different place. If the originals go missing, proof that you had passports will make it much easier to tussle with overseas authorities when it's time to come home

• Freeze food to await your return – even fresh milk can be frozen – so you don't come home to an empty kitchen. Some very organised mothers even do an online shop towards the end of their holiday, for delivery on their first day home. Now, that's organisation!

• Lost luggage is a nightmare. Rather than filling one suitcase per person, pack a couple of daytime and evening outfits for everyone in each case so you can all get started while the hotel/airline tracks down the missing bag

• Involve your children in the packing even if just a small part is their responsibility. It occupies them while you are busy and gets them into the holiday mood. Then check their choices: you may find fancy dress costumes and nothing sensible (OK, I admit this is from experience!)

• Add a small ‘emergency bag’ to your hand luggage, with plasters, tissues, sachets of paracetamol, cotton wool, needle and thread, safety pins, wetwipes and a few sweets (for bribing and wiping away tears). Oh the satisfying feeling to have what you need just at the right time!

• Pack spare clothes in your hand luggage in case of ‘accidents’

• Leave a spare set of keys with a friendly neighbour in case of home emergencies, losing yours or locking yourself out (I’ve done that just when we were about to leave!)

• Cancel the newspapers and ask your friendly neighbour to return the wheelie bins to your property on collection day, so you’re not advertising an empty home.

ON THE WAY• Long car journeys are not all about

being plugged into gadgets. Try story tapes – as a family, we are all totally addicted to the ‘How to Train your Dragon’ series. The ‘Michelin I-Spy’ activity books are great fun, as are the free downloads from www.rac.co.uk/advice/car-knowledge/top-ten/car-games/. I made up some sheets myself for a journey through France and they kept my boys amused for hours

• For flights, Usborne’s ‘50 Things do on a Plane’ will keep them occupied, rrp £5.99, while the Top Trumps range is great for older children, especially if you're willing to join in

• Flying is the one time I am relaxed about screen time – if you have electrical gadgets, use them. Make sure

you have some child friendly headphones to hand so as not to 'share' your child's love of Peppa Pig with the entire plane

• Sucky sweets (as they are known in our house) are great for little ones who struggle with their ears on take off. Give babies a bottle (or breastfeed) to stop their ears popping

• Pack an extra layer for the flight even if you're flying from a warm UK to a tropical destination. Planes can be chilly and children won't relax if they're not cosy

WHILE YOU'RE THERE• Resist the temptation to Facebook

your day's antics – you're advertising that you are away and your home's empty. Not a good idea

• When packing to come home, check the back of every drawer, cupboard and even under the beds for favourite toys that might be lurking unseen. Have a quick rifle through the hotel/resort Lost Property box for mislaid hats/t-shirts etc (patting yourself on the back for labelling them beforehand).

WHEN YOU RETURN• Take your holiday laundry for a

service wash – it's a small price to pay for not having to sort, wash and dry all those gritty beach towels and sunscreen covered t-shirts.

AND FINALLYWork on a 70:30 ratio. Holidays are not be effortless when you have children, just as life at home is not effortless. If you can enjoy 70% of the time you are away together, that's a result. 30% will be about tantrums, tiredness and bad moods. But if you come home knowing that for most of the time, you relaxed, laughed and enjoyed the time spent together as a family, it's been a success!

Summer is an exciting time – remember those days as a child running, playing on swings, making paper boats to sail on a stream, or playing pooh sticks over a babbling brook. Most parents I know want the best for their children and one of the best things you can give a child is happy memories.

This is much easier than most parents think. We are living in a world of materialism, instant gratification, high pressure selling and “never enough”. This is an adult world created by adults that reflects how we are, our sense of urgency and how we spend time with our children.

Slow down this summer and make the most of your time to re-connect with your children. All children want your attention as a matter of priority. It is the type of attention that you give that will determine how they learn to gain that attention from you.

This summer immerse your children in positive attention, leaving you all feeling rejuvenated and refreshed and back in love with your whole family.

Plan ahead and get organisedPlanning and organising is an adult activity and I promise you the more you plan and prepare the more fun you will have with your children. Make planning integral to your day and your week and engage your whole family in the task of planning.

Of course it is wonderful to do things on the spur of the moment – but know your child! Most young children don’t like sudden change in routine.

Take each week, look at the week as a whole: there should be a balance of – time for the children, time for activities, time for being together as a family, time for you and your husband / partner. Any time left over can be for friends or other activities. Of course some of these times will overlap, just make sure the time allocated for each is not combined and therefore halved.

Then take each day – and do the same, have you got a balance within that day, if

not make sure whatever was missed is made up for the following day e.g. if you have a day planned spending time with your children doing activities and engaging with them yet you have not scheduled in time with your partner, make sure you make up for that the following day. This could be as simple as sitting down acknowledging in a letter what it is you love and appreciate about each other. If that sounds daunting do it urgently and go back to a time and write about when you did love and appreciate each other.

if you are going away – Keep the week before free from distractions, enrol your children and prepare them for your adventure. Talk about where you are going, what things you could do when you get there and ask them questions about what you will need to take and get them to help you plan activities. Involving children not only gives them a sense of belonging, it also builds their confidence and their subconscious knowledge that you trust their input and / or decisions. Have them help you make lists of things to pack – what clothes etc. they will need. Make getting ready to go fun and exciting.

Give them a couple of days’ notice before it is time to come home – prepare them for “the ending” in a way that is positive.

What have they enjoyed the most, who would be the first person they would like to tell about their holiday when you get home? Make the holiday last by buying post cards or items that can go into a “holiday journal” to make when you are home. What things can you do at home that reflect the activities you did on holiday? Remember to keep the week free when you come back to follow through with these extended holiday activities including scheduling time for your children to “tell” those they want to. Let your creative side run wild.

if you are staying at home – Make a point to have the holiday period stand out as different from the rest of the year. Holidays are a time of fun, sun and

excitement as well as rest and relaxation. Plan in the same way – look through and use the myriad of information available on line to find out what’s going on in your local area, many activities are free or reasonably priced.

Look at your week – are there any days where you can spend the whole day on “an adventure” going to the beach or the new forest? Sell these activities to your children as an adventure, if you are upbeat and excited they will be too. Enrol their help in preparing – if you’re planning a picnic get them to help write the shopping list, take them to the supermarket and have them find the things on the list. All these things get them working for you as well as building their confidence and trust.
